aright, i just got an iron and a universal wax, but i've never waxed before. does anyone have any tips or basic info?

yah.. swix makes nasty wax and poles n shit.. def check them out for wax.. its www.swixsport.com too.. not swix.com... but they have all nasty tuning devices n shit too, so def. check em out... Jon and a bunch of big names all use it.. so dope

First thing, sharpen your edges with a file and guide, make sure you're using the rigth bevel angle. Brush all the filings off the base. Take a citrus cleaner and clean the bases, let it sit on the base for a bit the scrub off. This is to remove old dry way from the small pores in your base. Heat your iron to medium heat, if the wax smokes it's too hot. Drip wax over your ski. You don't need a lot since all you really have to do is fill the pores and wax ON the surface of the base will need to be scraped off anyway. Use the iron to heeat up the wax drops and spread it over the whole base, put your skis outside to cool, bring em in when the wax begins to get brittle. Take a thick wax scraper in two hand and scrape tip to tail and remove all the wax you can. Polish the base with a cork block. Now if you want you can add texture with a brush. Drag the brush tip to tail or cross hatch it ...... there's lots of way to add structure ... what that does is encourage water, that melts from the friction of your skis, to escape at the edges instead of staying under the base to create suction.

 
using the base cleaner is kind of a controversial subject. another way of cleaning your bases is to hot wax and then scrape right away when the wax is still hot. Or you can not worry about cleaning em at all. some people say using a cleaner will dry the base out too much, I don't know, do whatever you like best.

 
i've never used a base cleaner on my skis. just wax over em. get a full machine tune at a shop at the beginning of the season, to keep the bases flat and even and such, then just wax & edge the skis yourself over the course of the season.

maybe if you're really interested in doing your own skis go to a tuning clinic or wax clinic at your local shop, i'm sure they have them

best cheap wax i ever used was the 'stick lick' by RC Sport. I dunno what it is about that shit but all my friends notice a difference when we use it.

im just gonna sling crystal meth so i dont have to get a real job and can afford to ski, with the way my senior year is goin though thats probably one of my few options

It shouldnt hurt it. Just dont be pressing hard. Some say that you shouyld run the iron the length of the ski, not in small circles - others say use the circle technique but I tend to go with the straight method. Since that is the way the ski will be travelling when its on the snow.
