Ski trip to Utah and big sky

Yo guys,

Road tripping through Utah to big sky the 5-12 of this month. Got airbnbs the 5-8 and 8-12 respectively. Plan is to hit snowbird and Brighton most likely and then big sky. Looking for any recommendations as far as anything goes?? City life? Skiing areas? Thanks guys

+1 on Porcupine over in that area. Good place.

Salt Lake has no real nightlife. No real ski bars or anything special. Wouldn’t really bother with downtown SLC.

Park city has better ski town stuff if you make it that way. Plenty of ski bars, restaurants. All that stuff.

Hit up Caliber Coffee in Big Sky. Stop in early and have a coffee with Red, he might be in jail at the moment. Last I kicked it with him he had an ankle monitor and was headed to court the following day.

Is little Caesar’s good? Like how does it compare to dominoes?

I just got back from Big Sky. Drove up there for the weekend from Utah.

Heads up, the road from well before West Yellowstone, there and north to Big Sky is quite the trip. Seems they keep it a maintained snowpack on the road. It’s pretty remote and like I said solid snowpack. I’d be prepared on that thing.

Also, Big Sky as a ski area is interesting. Not much of a town or hotels or base area. It’s enough but minimal. Ski resort lift layout is weird. Goofy lift layout and placement. Mountain was fun. Some good terrain just weird to get to a bunch of it. Maybe I just didn’t know since it was my first time? That new 8 is also dumb and not needed.

I donno, I'd say it was superior to old Domino's, but since Domino's upped their game a couple years ago I think the have Caesar's beat. YMMV.

Shut the hell your mouth, that's my baby.

I mean, sure it’s nice and fancy and expensive and they market the shit out of it. But why is it needed? Especially in that location.

In two days of skiing that place I felt they could have improved other lifts and locations that needed it. That 8 pack should just be a high speed quad. That other high speed quad out of the base should be a 6 pack. The 6 pack bubble lift in the middle of that bowl should be a quad at most.

Like i said. Goofy lift layout makes the mountain feel clunky.

Well yeah, you’te Clearly not from here. Everett’s at 8’000 is why that lift is there in the first place, but you out of town errs don’t get that. Big Sky has been slowly replacing lifts for quite some time now. Swifty’s day will come.

Stick to skiing Utah.

I'm gonna thread-jack the shit out of this.

I read your essay about cyborgs and androgyny in Japanese pop culture (linked from your profile). You use The Major from Ghost in the Shell as an example of an androgynous character, no longer being in a biologically female body she adopts a more stereotypically masculine demeanor and style of dress and uses both male and female mannerisms to exert power.

However, I have seen several other essays arguing that her cyborg body actually makes her more female rather than androgynous, and arguing that it is an example of a separation of the concepts of biological gender and gender/sexual identity that was quite progressive for Japan at the time. These authors essentially point out that despite not having a biologically female body, The Major maintains a female identity, joking about her menstrual cycle (that she doesn't actually have) and giving a feminist perspective on gender politics. They also point out that she dates both men and women, which was a nuanced example of the separation between gender identity and sexual identity that was quite sophisticated for Japanese pop culture at the time.

Essentially, they argue, despite her lack of a biological need to be female, she identifies as female, and in fact is a progressive, liberated, feminist, and sex-positive hyper-female.

One thing to consider, was your essay based on the manga or the film? These authors were referencing the manga, and I'm not sure that the same could be argued from the 90's animated film alone (I don't recall her dating anyone in the film).

I will stick to Utah. Snow and mountains are better and I live here.

It’s standard criticism of a ski resort. Any local would be butthurt, I get it. But the lift layout does suck.

I’ve been to most resorts now in the west and Big Sky just didn’t really do it for me. Just a notch below the other big ones, that’s all
