Ski touring

What are your opinions on ski touring? Is it better than back-country off of a ski resort and is it worth the money?

Sorry if this is a re-post.

*By worth the money I mean is it worth the cost of skins, touring binding, (maybe powder skis) ect...

LOL, pretty much. Put it this way. Go where you want and have heli ski terrain and the cost of gear and fuel for your car. The only down side is that when you heli skiing you get 3-7 laps while ski touring gets 1-2 or you can just lap features. So lets say a pillow line that take 45 mins to ski up , would take you about an hour per lap,( plus your approach) do 3-6 of those then ski on to the car.

I personally love ski touring and tour quite often but if you expecting a 45 min hike for a couple thousand feet of vert then you in for a huge surprise when you go out your first time.

Yeah most back country enthusiasts don't just do it for the snow. For me I fin it so relaxin to be trekking through the mountains and getting that reward of skiing some untouched lines. I'm not to sure what to use for a ski set up though. I already ordered some guardians and I am jut not sure for skis.

This.

If you like hiking and like skiing pow, it's the tittays. Nothing like conquering an ascent and then pillaging fresh lines just you and your bros/brosephinas IMO.

This.

Anymore use my skins to get out of places not to go to places. I typically like riding the chair lift up and then skiing to a road or just beyond a hill that I have to skin over to get back tot he chair lift.

I ride dukes because the ultimate goal is skiing and not the journey of skinning. At least for me that is. I'm not in good enough shape to warrant tech bindings nor do I really care about super long tours.

That's just me and my 2 cents.

Changed Skiing or me! Hate people and lift lines because of Touring. Only ski untracked all day, but Have been in and around several avalanches. Get an avalanche beacon/ probe/ shovel and training before you get a touring set up.

Its the best thing there is, I just love touring around looking for fun features. I only ride resort when theres fresh. Otherwise id way rather walk all day for 2-3 epic runs.

I am really excited to start touring this winter. I finally have to the resources to get them shit I need to make it happen.

Yeah ask TGR because nobody here skins to get the goods. NS only consists of suburban wangsters from the PA.

if you have the cash for a touring only rig , get dynafits right off the bat. You will eventually anyways. Plus for boots get something with a walk mode , you'll thank me later

Touring = win. I love it. I am also getting a setup this year (before I always borrowed gear). But definitely get the proper avalanche gear.

3 hours of skiing in total? I think that is a pretty unrealistic goal. even when cat skiing for a 7 hour day, you probably don't get much more than 3 hours of actual ski time, if that.

Touring is well worth it. Slack country is generally the more amount of skiing for your climbing time seeing as you don't have to climb the entire approach

It so awesome. I was just day dreaming about the places im gonna go this winter while doing my chemistry homework

and more importantly, the proper avalanche education. Your beacon isn't going to help you find your friend/s if you don't know how to use it. Also keep in mind, the further out you go the more fucked you are when you huck a cliff and break your leg.

Other than that skinning sucks, don't do it...

(more powder for me)

Touring is awesome. You'll get fresh lines which not everybody and their mums already have ridden. Also you rarely meet dumb people what you can't say at the lift lines

Love it so much. There's something about earning your turns that makes it so much more rewarding

It's expensive if you factor in an Avi 1 course (or similar), bindings, skins, poles, beacon, shovel, probe. But it's all worth it in my mind. If you are new to it don't bother with dynafits and at boots, just use your ski boots and dukes/guardians.

So last season I finally got the opportunity to catch 3 days of Heli skiing in interior BC, but I must admit I wasn't as impressed as i figured because I spoil myself with self propelled pow in dope terrain much closer to home. Take the time to learn your shit and invest in good equipment. The rest will follow. O
