Ski Sundown 2014-2015

i worked on Tom's last night. built some rollers, a weird snow dog house thing that may not last the weekend - to be turned into a regular spine. an additional rail deck and an additional jump. so two rails, two jumps.

that's about as much as i'll be putting on Tom's due to traffic demands of the masses.

next week, i think we'll swap the down bar for the big dfd. thoughts?

You do a great job there jarrod. I miss you guys.

Happy that there are being more features added, but will there ever be a jump on stinger again

So, the reason there isn't a jump on Stinger is pretty easy. We could have 4 rails, or we could have 1 rail and 1 jump. Given the space left on Stinger, we picked 4 rails. The other reason is, it takes a lot of time, effort and space to have just one jump, which is usually fine, but when you really think about the number of people that actually hits those jumps every run, it's a very small amount compared to the people that hit every rail every run. Basically, it's hard to justify taking up the entire trail for a jump that only a handful of people will actually use all season. That being said, when spring rolls around (aka when more people really like hitting jumps) we'll be more open to adding a jump.

I realize this is annoying, and probably not the answer people want to hear, but when you really sit back and look at the trail as a whole, it makes the most sense. I know we said Satan's wouldn't get in the way very much...but plans change faster than you'd think, and this one is completely out of our control.

who carezzz stinger is honestly so fun fdf should be switched out with another rail IMO, that rail's hit or miss for meh

It's on the list for the next build. We were thinking Monday night, but not entirely sure right now.

I actually really like the set-up of big down urban things like the 32 and big dfd, big red is kinda weird IMO.

mellow tubes are fun too I guess, except it attracts a million hiking skittle kidz

Out of curiosity why more of the same thing?

13340535:jackdonovan said:
same maybe a slight up

Possible, but unlikely, next build plan has the spot an up rail would go being used by more awesome things.

Landing got kinda flat from all the snow, gotta go faster. It's most likely getting moved anyways.

Mellow tubes serve their purpose, I wish people hiking the top tower would move off to the side more and respect those that are trying to flow the park as a whole more, but whatever.

See previous post on jumps...sorry, not yet.

ya my bad

will there ever be another ski sundown slopestyle event? Or anything like that course, with jumps and rails all the way down stinger?

I mean, it's hard to say never...but most likely not. Reason being, we had over 40 kids sign up for a rail jam in the public park (meaning no "extra" build time required...next year hopefully it's a fresh setup but will end up being the public park - like in years past), those slopestyle courses closed half the park for a week, took a ton of man and machine hours to build, were only hittable for a day, and attracted around 20 people...just not really worth it. Believe me when I say, it's not that we don't want to build the courses...cause Jarrod and I are always talking about how much fun they are to build...there's just other factors in play.

Because, you know updates and stuff...

So, Big Red and the Waterfall have been replaced with the Unbow and the Large Lift Tower, we added the medium lift tower to the steeps. For full disclosure, rainbow was going to be where the large tower is, but it broke (plastics need some redoing, bummer, but yeah).

Tom's is next on the list for a major tune up. But, we added a propane tank bonk and cleaned up the jumps so they're less "V'd" out until then.

I am well aware that this season has been...well, different. I'd like to have some different/awesome stuff up for the spring. So throw some suggestions in here and we can try and make it happen (no promises, as always, but I would like to hear your opinions).

Personal note, ON3P demo skis will be in possession after our Loon Demo on March 8th. If anyone wants to try them out, let me know and we can make it happen. We will have a full demo at Sundown at some point, but I haven't scheduled that yet.

big lift tower > rainbow

So i'm kinda glad it broke to be honest lol, park yesterday was $$$$ until school got out and there was about 15-20 kids in front of some of the damn features, kind of ruins the flow of the park when you have to weave around people who don't drop in for 5 minutes, especially the people filming sometimes too like man... you guys don't own the park lol

: )

Id really like to see toms actually hittable...it was nice to have two legitimate parks to choose from but we haven't had that at all this year.

A couple rails like a lift tower or elbow kink or anything that is more than 2 inches out of the ground would be nice. I wanna be able to bring someone who has never skied before and still have fun and hit some rails on toms

A) please refer to my previous post.

B) We've been getting more requests for beginner features on Tom's so that people can learn...that is the whole point of the trail, to learn how to slide rails in a lower pressure situation (i.e. not under the main lift).

C) We've been getting many complaints in the past from new skiers/snowboarders that Tom's was too crowded and that "park people" were being rude and difficult to learn around...aka, everyone was a dick to the new skiers and snowboarders on a green circle learning trail, therefore Tom's gets smaller features until spring. There is a long-term solution planned, but who knows when it will happen or if it will change. I hate to say it, but we were trying to warn people of this in the past, people being disrespectful to customers makes it harder for us, as a park crew, to request allowance for more things...Tom's is a green circle/easiest way down trail first and a park trail second.

I understand that, but would it be possible to split the park and main trail into two lanes to seperate park and learners. Because honestly combining these two trails is a terrible comboination. or like after that big left turn area that goes to flat and splits into a couple trails, fence off the area for the park and have a sign (youve done this previously). I feel like that will help alot and ward off some parents w/kids. no hate! loving the parks. cant wait for spring, hoping to see another mini pipe! or maybe a massive hip?

We need to be able to groom the trail still, meaning a snowcat (about 20ft) on either side of each feature...we're barely able to do that as it is, let alone with the trail split in half. And, we're not trying to ward off parents and children...again it's a green circle first, a park trail second. We've also noticed this year that more people are trying to learn how to start sliding rails because of the way Tom's is set-up too, meaning more people are getting into park skiing and snowboarding (kinda the point of putting it on Tom's honestly). I think the problem is in years past we did too much to Tom's, honestly the way it's set-up right now is how it should have been all along.

will the sundown park crew ever have an instagram or youtube channel with park updates and/or park laps? sounds like a good idea, just dont know if you guys have the time and stuff

Jarrod and I are really the only people who post to the instagram and I'm the one who films and edits 90% of the videos posted by sundown...so we kind of already do this.

The @skisundown instagram is the only official instagram, we have nothing to do with any others. And every time we change the park up (and more than that) I make an edit that has some laps in it, those go on the Sundown facebook and vimeo. We have no need for a separate park account...it's not that big of a mountain.

Yeah, it's pretty fun right now.

There hasn't been any talk of only being open on weekends yet, there could be some weather closings, but since we just started the season pass promotion (by your 15/16 pass now, ski for the rest of the season for free) we'll probably be open during the week for a bit.

Also, kinda big things happening tomorrow morning...hopefully it comes true...stay tuned.

Jump is now up on Stinger.

Sorry it took so long, there were several reasons why we didn't want a jump up (one of the biggest being space and maintenance) until now, but since it's spring we're a bit more comfortable with it. Basically, we didn't want to take up the entire bottom of the trail with a jump knowing that if that jump ever had to be closed for some reason it would take away a significant portion of the park. Now that snow is softer, it's easier to maintain with a rake and shovels unlike mid-winter. We know it wasn't the most popular approach, but it was one that we felt was right.

Anyways, enjoy the soft landings and spring slush.

Mahalo!

No backflips, frontflips or Lincoln loops. Flatspins are a grey area...basically don't let your feet go above your head.

how are things looking saturday weather wise....will the mountain still be open?
