Ski Shop in Moncton

Hey everyone, I'm throwing around the idea of opening a Ski shop in Moncton that will focus most of it's attention on new school stuff.

Since moncton doesn't really have a ski focused shop I figure we need one. Anyway, I was wondering how many of you live in the Moncton area... or would travel to moncton for a shop like this and what products you'd like to see in a shop.

I'm still in a rough draft of the business plan but

I'd say it's an alright idea, but Radical Edge couldn't stay a float in that area right? They catered to several different markets. A1 in Hali caters to different markets, not just extreme sports. With that being taken into consideration, honestly, my next word of advice would be to incorporate a website and market it at atleast a national level.

If the ONLY foucs is new-school, don't do it, D-structure still has to offer products in various markets. Very few shops have been able to stay around. I bought stuff back in the day from mogulshop.com I think it was, and they went out of business and like skistore.com or something bought them out and that was a small business with big advertising, competitive prices and was run with no building costs as it was all done by some guy in his house.

Moncton also has a West 49 which would take away business, plus the fact that if u are gonna sell snowboard goods, west 49 could have rights to certain companies already. The reason there's not one in Fredericton is cause Burton (one of their top sellers) has a contract with Radical Edge.

On top of all of this it takes a lot of money to start up and finding money isn't the easiest thing. No idea what your background is, but in general, usually you have to have a pretty solid business plan, be very convincing and you'll still have to sign your life earnings away, plus probly have family members put up their houses as collateral if something goes wrong. Sad realities of life. Hey, it's just my opinoin...I don't think Moncton has the market for it. Good luck with that, peace

by the way, if it was a store like d-structure, i'd buy from ya as long as the prices were reasonable.

Yeah I am looking in to what other products I'd be selling. I've ruled out snowboards we got a few company's that have the snowboard market locked down. West49 doesn't even carry snowboards because of Skate-to-snow and Bungays. I've been looking at d-stuctures product line and it looks good. Thing is, I don't know of any other people in Moncton the are into new school. If the customer base isn't here I won't be going furthure with the idea but that will all come out in the business plan.

It's just so easy for me to log onto

d-structure.com and order a set of skiis and have them at my house the next day with shipping and tax included than to buy from a local store and pay 15% tax. Everybody wants to support local buisness but this tax and stuff is rediculous and d-structure is soo respected. I know of a handful of guys who do this aswell. My opinion is to do some research and don't jump into it. It is a good idea but try to know what your customers want and how many there are first first...good luck champ

Well like I said before I only have a rough business plan and I'm working on the market fesiblity study now. It's going to take a while to finish. If the idea looks to have some potential of being profitable, the store should open around september.

Also not to knock D-structure I use them to, but where they're in Quebec they have an 18% tax rate. It's added into the prices but your still paying tax.

^but it's still the cheapest place to buy stuff which is what consumers like poor kids and their parents love.....

man if u were going to open a shop why wouldnt u just carry as much stuff as u can to make the most money, theres like 100 people tops that would be buying twins around here thats not going to be much flow for u

d-structure is the place to go, those guys are so nice. it's bomb, you can drop in there and chill with them and watch movies and shit.

What the fuck do you expect? It's like leaving a crackhead in a room full of crack, you know what's gonna happen.

If the store is fesible at all, I want it to be a place people like to go and even hang out. I remember when I was younger how much I appreciated shops that respected me and my friends just for being people not potential customers. As far as low prices go it looks like I'd be able to at least match d-structures prices judging by the wholesale prices I'm getting at the moment.

Yeah thats a good idea...I could work there cuz i live in moncton....but what about summer??I bet that not alot of peole wants to buy skis in the summer well probably but you probably still need a other product to sell like skateboards or somethin...And not only sell newschool suff...sell race shit to and accecories and have like couches and stuff to just chill and watch movies and stuff...

Whatever thats my opinion

d-structure is startin to jack up their prices since they are getting huge business from the US.

There is a reason why many stores don't have couchs and tv's for teenage kids to hang around in...it's not profitable. Despite being great customers, these types of customers can only bring a store so much profit, meanwhile, they cost the store in various other ways. It's not good business. One of the few companies that does cater to these type of service, in some ways, is Starbucks, who has positioned themselves as an experience. If you aren't gonna sell snowboards or like every other sport under the moon (I'd suggest to target a GENERAL extreme sports market, like freestyle bmx, aggressive inline, etc) then don't go into business. Atlantic Canada is such a small market and online sales aren't yet at what economists predicted years ago...you'r gonna have to come up with one solid-as-fuck business plan to convince someone to invest in your company. Good luck brain storming...

I do have other products in mind, in-lines, bmx, etc. Plus it will have a online store as well, becuase I'm a software engineer, I already have e-comm template stores I built myself, so all I'd need to pay for is the hosting the rest I can do.

On the business plan yeah it needs to be super rock solid, if I go ahead with it, I'm going to be usings my own money to finace it, the only extra money I may get are some government grants but I most likey won't need them.

LOL, Well in a real building. but I'm not sure as to what part on the city. I'm thinking if I go ahead with the store I'll get a store front on either St goerge, Mountain Rd., or Coverdale in Riverview, but that part of the planning is still a ways off.

Yeah theres a little place on acadia av. (Amirault st.) and theres a basement and shit but its not like a mal or anything its just a store in the corner off a other street out of no wheres...

yo dude,

some good thoughts posted by everyone here.

clearly d-structure has lowered the market value all across NA. this will catch uip to them even if belenger owns it. major manufactures and distributors will not allow internet sales to dominate service for forever, even in the twintip market. the key with freeki sales is finding away for the sport to grow here. kids parents will not buy of dstructure. just cause ferg. shops from d doesnt mean everyone else will. (ferg- dont take offense dude) the key is here fore freeskiing to grow. the trend the last few years is the role players drop out of the sport and kids have no one to look up too. with kids like foster, nick, shaun, and jon, it looks good, but remember we need the complete package. local hills that will commite to a full park and pipe season, good competition scheduling and good local talent, and coaching. we are a long way off. our parks get built decent by feb. or march with pipes just as late, experienced local skiers are frustrated and the comps are a joke. most hills host three when they should put all energy in one.

anyway-ski shops would be cool anywhere. i dont see a profitalbe career though. peace

the real east starts here

Well, after 3 weeks of working on this thing, I've confirmed that in-order to be profitable I'd need to attract 90% of the new school market in NB, NS, and PEI. As well I'd needd to do about 30% of my business online. This is just to be profitable in the winter as well, for the rest of the year it would pretty much be a right off. Inlines have almost no popularity here and the market is saturated with bike shops.

Basically I'd be committing financal suicide opening the shop, I may however start a small online store without a storefront. I'll keep you all posted.
