Ski Resort Marketing/Managment

Hey guys, I'm currently a freshman in college and I'm thinking about going into the field of Marketing. I'm just wondering how stiff the comp is to get a job at a ski resort as a Marketer. Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated. Also if annyone knows where I could get so facts/data about Marketing at a ski resort that would be great.

you can also get a ski resort management degree at

lyndon state college

and green mountain college in vermont

or colorado mountain college

yea marketing is bullshit. its great if you want to be a wedding planner. but for anything professional you're obsolete after 35 years old. cause you're not 'with it'

^True

If you want something worth your time/parents money get a degree in finance/accounting and management

No one in the business world takes marketing majors seriously...it's the easiest degree to get which is why there are thousands of job less marketing majors out there right now

not true. my buddy's dad works in marketing. i'm not 100% sure what he does but he "markets" his company on an international level. he works trying to give feedback to his company as to what products a customer might want. wherever there is sales, there is marketing. look at the ads above and to the right of this thread. marketing. theres so much you can't get away from it. pretty cool if you ask me

i'm talking about consumer products that target a youthful age group. which is going to be a big money industry with baby boomers becoming more conservative with the expenditures when they are trying to align themselves for retirement. more and more money is going to be coming from our generation whom are a lot more frivolous with their money. although we are savvy buyers so it will make marketing that much more fierice to persuade us.

marketing your lets say, manufacturing business is a totally different kind of marketing. marketing to ski businesses to get their banners on the site is a different kind of marketing. you can be any age for that.

That is a good point.

But if you're comparing one business major to another...accounting or finance is infinitely better than marketing

my bad dude. a few posts ago you said it was bullshit, where i thought you meant in general. you meant in the ski industry. its all cool

Boys its pretty simple, a degree in accounting is the only way to be taken seriously. It enables you to transition to any job at all in finance. If you want to run a ski resort, I am pretty sure they'd rather you know how to balance a budget, then know which color scheme will be most affective on a billboard.

Or get your B.A/B.S. in Marketing and then do an M.B.A.

That is more impressive than only a B.A./B.S. in Finance or Accounting..

Also, you forgot to mention that a B.A./B.S. in Marketing is more impressive than a B.A./B.S. in management.

right and idk about the US but unemployment rate for people with a higher degree (bachelor/master/doctor) is 1% here in austria. so much for those "thousands of jobless marketing majors".

yeah, thats why my plan was originally going to be

B.A. Spanish w/ Business Minor + M.B.A.

but now it just changed to:

B.A. Spanish w/Business Minor + J.D./M.B.A.

i think what the problem is with ski resort mgmt is that it is too specialized.

the number of those specialized programs with the number of graduates of those programs vs the number of ski resorts that you are limited to working at with your language abilities is extremely competitive, with i presume many graduates accepting low end administration jobs. you're just setting yourself in the end. instead take a more generalized resort management degree with a continuing education specialized "ski" resort certificate degree tacked on at the end.

yeah the only problem is im going to college for free (my mom knows people who know people) and they dont have a Ski Resort Management at this college. I'm just looking for a major were I can move out west and ski but still have a career. I honestly dont care about money that much i'm just looking for a major where I move out west(current in Mass) and get a fare amount of skiing in.

Any suggestions?

be a ski instructor.

you can get a free pass and tons of tips, ski instructing out west is huge.

use whatever bullshit degree you get in MA to get some kind of full time job to pay bills.

sounds like a typical ski bum life, i love it

I considered studying this, and you are absolutely correct. I think promotions/adertisement/marketing is a way better idea than management. there just arent as many resorts looking for management.

Once involved with the industry, your opportunities are endless as long as you play your cards right.

I met a marketing exec. on the lift at my home mountain. She works for IBM and said that if you want a good job in marketing learn about Search Marketing, and read a book written by Hunt, Maybe James Hunt, I don't remember. But anyways, she said what companies are really looking for is people who know about search marketing. It's also not taught in colleges yet, thats what she told me. But anyways the search marketing industry is all about knowing HTML coding, which will give you an even bigger chance at getting a job if you know how to do that.

james hunt? iconic and bad ass formula 1 driver?
