Ski Related Employment

Well, I'm usually happily unemployed, but I've started applying at everywhere ski-related I can. I need to pay my damn tuition. Yes, this includes those typically worthless chain stores... but I need advice. Where else? Also, what type of refernces should I use. In case you haven't guessed, I suck at this job searching thing, but I can't afford school otherwise.

I promoted my CVS and Stop and Shop card from the inside slits to the outside ones...my Blockbuster and gym ID got pissed off, but I told them, sorry guys, laminated plastics just can't cut it in the big leagues

^Sigh... I don't know what I expected from NSG.

yeah, i bet the people at mountain cannon would be a bit more serious, but who knows?

go listen to some emo. those whiny guys feel your pain. -linemaverick5...

just make you tell them that you are very commited to the ski industry, have a wealth of knowledge about the skiing youth and their needs and wants, etc etc.

your a smart guy, you can prob figure it out for yourself

keep your filthy mits off me!

you should work at a sevenn elleven and pretend its a ski place, or just make money in your house

eddie stevens is cool, hey my name is eddie

Working in the 'industry' rules! I loved my time as a shop bitch! It was awesome when my bosses fucked me, forgot to pay me, and made me work overtime! And the best part was that by working in the 'industry', I actually got to save money, because I had no time to go skiing!!!!!!!

Seriously, if you need a job, and you value skiing, you're better off working at Starbucks. Especially if you're considering Sport Chek or any other chain. If you really really want a job in the 'industry', and you're only qualified for a shop job, go to a couple GOOD shops, talk to the shop managers, ask them what's up with hiring, and they'll probably be so stoked that someone is actually willing to work in their shop for minimum wage that a resume will be unnecessary.

All that being said, I do believe that if you end up in a good shop that is respected by its suppliers, and that treats its employees well, it won't be that bad. Good luck with the job search.

^ Suggestions for 'good' shops around here? I know plenty of snowboard places, but...

I lied to get my first tech job I told them I knew how to do everything and forced them to train me the first day it was pretty funny

God is an American.

There's nothing that approaches D-Structure or Corbetts in BC. That being said, Comor, North Shore ski&board, and others can still be very good, and will provide a better work environment than Sport Chek.

The idea that I know a few things about skiing would be fairly amenable to an application at Comor, but I dunno if they're actually hiring. They usually run on a light staff, even in winter.

North Shore Ski and Board is a great shop, but its pretty small, and you definetely wouldnt be able to get a job until about late september/october. summer is obviously a little slower

Basically, if you can breathe, have even the slightest ability to learn, and know how to speak, you can work in a ski shop. It doesn't require a high level of intelligence, or even knowledge. Anything you need to know you can pick up as you go along. Apply to comor and N/S S&B, and any other real ski shop you can find. You'll probably find something and won't have to feel shitty about working at Sport Chek and ripping people off.

No. I've come to expect ridiculous online behaviour from them.

Hey, maybe one day I'll buy myself a moderator position. Until then, I recommend you shove a very long, thick, pointy stick up your ass. Then, when it won't go any further, bend over and get someone to drive into the stick at 79 miles an hour. Maybe then you'll shut the fuck up.

Don't be an idiot and spam threads that are actually helpful to people. You should know better, being a mod.

yeah i work at a local independent ski shop and its pretty sweet, the hook ups you get from working at a ski shop are so huge too

HIGH NORTH SESSION 4

Get your wife to work at a ski shop, mine does so I get the swag at cost from the shop, a check every week from my wife and I get to ski free plus we have a place to stash our stuff so it won't get ripped off or pay for ski valet oh and free food in the lounge. Working for the industry takes away from your skiing time is so true, my wife skied just a few times last winter, I got in about 45 times, the winter before she skied twice and I got in about 65 to 70 times now the winter before that(not working for the ski shop) she skied about 15 times and I got in about twice as much(I enjoy it alot more than she does hence I go more). So if you want to ski I wouldn't work in the industry unless you are in a job that requires you to be on the hill like trolling or instructing and I think the groomers get to ski it up quite abit as well. I just save my vacation time for the winter and work outside the industry during the summer.

***Hire a teenager while they still know everything.***

definately try comor...they are nice guys there....just look around..

i would think working at a ski shop would be below you JD, cant you get an internship or anything?

dont worry about what i can or cant do, worry about what you cant do to me

if ur set on a ski-related job, my guess is ur not gonna find lots of money, but if u just want to pay the bills so you can afford to ski next winter, go talk to ur college counselor-type people, they usually know of tons of internships and job opportunities available for college students

I do have a job on a fishing boat, but that's only one or 2 days. I get 500 bucks a day for it, though. Not bad for a day's work. I don't exactly see how working in a ski store or a sports shop would take up any more of my skiing time than any other job would, though.

when you go in for an interview, a good thing to ask is if they press charges.

I'd rather be rich than stupid.
