ok so i go to the winter sports school in park city utah and there are alot more racers then there are freeriders and u can def tell the division between us wu are ur takes on ski racing? any stories?

i used to race and i loved it its made me a better skiier that actually has technique and form! and can still take it to the park and hit the kickers and have fun... im just freeride now but racin is the shit yo!

i used to race and it was sick. i acutally learnt how to ski well. you see people who have only been freestyling their whole life and they cant even ski

No hate, ski racing takes a lot of talent. Plus, just cause you're a ski racer doesn't mean you can't freeride in your spare time. Racers are bomber in trees, not to mention all the other terrain.

there is no reason to hate on racers its fun as well as being very difficult plus a lot of park riders started in racing

Thats definitely the same for me. Racing helps so much with edge control and balance.

I think young kids should race at least one year...then they'd start to kill it way harder

at my mountian the racers are fags they think they own the mountain... i have nothing aganst racers,i respect them their just fags at my mountain

hahaha.. somebody you and I know didn't do any races last year. It's actually a lot of fun to get your crew over to run the Nastar Course and see who is faster. After a few runs then run the gates switch! Good stuff!

i don't think its as much fun as park, but i still race for my high school and it's made me a way better skier.
i'm already surprised in the lack of hate in this thread, good job NS.

id have to agree about the lack of hate... id all i have to say is that if i hadnt raced for the 2 years that i did sophomore and junior year (in the dirty jerz), i wouldnt be here in slc having the time of my life, killing it in the pow and becoming obsessed with the lifestyle itself..

i've been racing for the past 6 years and have for the most part loved it. it gave me a reason to travel around the PNW and meet alot of new people. this was my last season racing though

Irony

ha! Take that non-hate-filled thread!

Anyways I never raced, but I dont have any problems with it~

funny thing. i have raced all my life since i was about 4. i quit last year at 18. it made me the skier i am for sure. racing is dope. i was a top racer. won the k2 provincials. now i live in whis. ride park all the time. im skiing to the chair, and apparently cut off a racers girlfriend. and he comes up to me and starts bitchin. and i was like i did nothing wrong, the person below has the right of way. and hes bitchin at me tellin me im an idiot and his coach says dont talk to people that ski like that. funny that i was a racer and won quite a few races. haha idiots i must say.

i race and love it, it gives you such a solid foundation for technique and skill. however im not one of the cocky ones, i just race for fun and i realize that im not the best and never will be, but i seriously hate kids who act like that. however after high school i probably wont keep racing because i dont really like the pressure, but i do like bringing the freestyle aspect to the race course. i've skied a few courses switch before on my anthems, and next year i plan on doing it for our last race of the season. But really, dont hate on all racers. sure, most of them are cocky idiots, but some of us arent. plus i would rather be able to ski everything well rounded than being really good at only park. look at most big name pros these days, 99% of them have raced at least a few years.

its the best when they roll into the lift line with their skin tight one piece racer suits and im rocking my oakley one piece with thre crotch down to my knees and they just stare me down whe i get off the lift i shred past em hahaha bitches.

yeah ski racing builds good technique and skiing ability but is something that kids should only do for like 3 years and then just go ski everything and get off the groomers

im neutral on this topic... never did it. its not as gay as some ppl say but i rlly just can stand the tight clothes. its nasty wen they go mad fast tho lol

one time i saw a kid who couldnt have been more than like 11 throwin 7's on a fukin 10 ft'r, in full tights, and race skis(with just about no tail). i was impressed

i totally agree they look like the biggest lose bag in those tights, i understand the whole aerodynamic thing but if that was me i would only wear that crap for the least amount of time possible.

we dont really have a choice bro, you wear clothes over them until its your run, and then leave them at the top. unless someone brings your clothes down for you, you gotta go back up to get them. and yes, it sucks riding the chair in them...

i used to race like from 10-14 years olds but i never really liked i did it cause my parents wanted me to learn really good how to ski... it takes a lot of work so i respect that but it's not for me

haha i dont suck! i still have MAD respect for racers! i really did like it! but skiing in the BC and shreddin the park is 500 times better then lapping thru the race course! the BC is so much more versitle when practicing gates all your trying to do is shave like 1/10s of a second off of your time!

Last night was prom and my date was from a different school and she asked me who skied. And I pointed her out to this girl. Shes like yeah I ski and busted out scars on both knees from skiing in duced surgeries.

^ ya you think it looks ridiculous, it rides up in the croth and crushes your jewels, and then has no insulation so when you are standing in the gate waiting and its cold you look down and its like "where is my weenie"!?!?!

you dont have to wear them i raced until i was 16 and in the last year i didnt wear it at all. I didnt win races but i also didnt look like a giant sperm so it all worked out in the end

^i wouldnt if i didnt care about my times dont get me wrong, but they for sure help with taking time off, and it boosts my mental confidence a little so i dont have a problem wearing one, besides the freezing my wang off part.

Not my story, but I was skiing in an all night ski for cancer vert challenge, and anyone looking to rack up runs was just tucking it all the way down with like 2 turns. Anyways there were a couple of us NSers up there, and one of us "V..." on NS almost got into a fight with some old racer dudes because he was ripping past them on his Seths. They told him his skis were way too fat and he didnt have any idea what he was doing etc rofl. It was pretty funny having them talk trash about our overfat skis when we both brought skis other than our rockered ones, I really regret not doing that shit on my EPs now~

i dont wanna hate on racers i really respect them and what they do but i jsut think that alot of them can be really cocky and stuck up about their sprot but then again they can be chill sometimes

ski racing is fun, and I still find the time to enter a race every season, if not two. Some racers do get cocky, like they own the mountain, but I think a lot of freeskiers do too. A lot of racers ski other places too, i.e. park, pow. . etc. . .. I raced for like 5 years and enjoyed it.

ski racers are also going to be better skiers than non-racers. This is not even debatable.

there are so many aspects of skiing to choose from, I suggest just skiing how you want, and enjoying other people around you. If you are respectful and friendly, chances are, they will be too.

NOW, if we are talking about racing coaches, yes, they do sometimes seem like they own the mountain. I have had problems with my own coaches in this aspect. But it is not all of them either, I know a lot of super cool race coaches who just dig skiing. they like going fast and chasing gates, and I would never knock on someone for that.

If it wasnt for ski racing, we probably wouldnt have skiing as we know it. Think about how many of the pros used to race? ESPECIALLY the pioneering pros. McConkey, Morrison. . . most all of them have a racing background.

Its all about doing whatever is fun to you, racing was never for me. I could care less why someone enjoys skiing, be it making pretty swivel turns on groomers ripping a steep line or skiing the park when theres freshies on the ground (although maybe I dont understand you 8/)~

It most certainly is debatable. And I think this attitude, which is shared by damn near every racer, is 90% of the reason people hate racers

I don't know who he is, but theres some 12 or 13 year old at my mountain that always shows up in the park in full race gear, knee pads and all hucking 7s off the booters. I find it hilarious and awesome.

i feel that racing is a very good to build very good technique that transfers to sking other terain i feel that if you strart at a younger age that really goes a long ways but i ive been skiing for 2 years and by the time racers are my age the level of compititon is so high that you shouldnt even waste your time

i really like how a lot of you call racers cocky but take a look at the ski gabber...there are massive egos everywhere on the mountain whether it be racers, park rats, snowboarders, snowlerbladers, etc...

i raced skicross in ontario this winter and it was awesome. were there some cocky fucks? definately, but at the end of the day drinking beers, no one really cared. egos are a part of sport regardless of what you're doing.

haha for last 3 years at my local mountaiin the jibblets always yell and throw stuff at the racers its funny wen you see a group racers pass under the chair and hear tons of f bombs and see the lil freeriders chuckin watever they hav stashed in there jackets rain down on the racers

Im not really into those skin suits.

plus the racers that share the Camp of Champs t bar are extremely annoying.

I raced from like when i was seven until i was 12 or 13 and loved it.... the only reason i quit was for soccer....... and now i want to quit soccer to shred park and pow...... I definatley think racing gives you an incredible amount of skill, skiing all around the mountain.

So true, I use to race, the racing was fun, everything else sucked. The kids are dicks from like age 7...and the parents are all crazy, and the coaches are crazy. Racing parents/kids/coaches remind me of the beauty pageant in Little Miss Sunshine...

Racing is fun as hell. Going super fast and making hard carves definetly can get the adrenaline going. I raced for one year of high school and it really taught me to carve aggresively and how to transfer your weight and keep my weight forward etc. I definetly owe a lot to racing, but I quit because the other people that were doing it were stuck up snobs that cared waaaaaay to much about it as if they were gonna be in the top 5 for states or some shit. I had fun skiing, but not so much skiing with the rich little pricks who had their parents pay for every single little thing. I was the kid that was riding used gear and didnt really care about what place I got. I mean yeah I was always in the top 15 but I would have rather been going off cliffs and hitting jumps and rails in the park, not trying to see if I can do run same course one tenth of a second faster. I was more stoked on gettin air and learning rails, cuz of the FUN FACTOR.
