Ski Racers

I'm pretty sure theres a huge thread about this somewhere. As long as they're not douchebags, and they don't race through the park I have no problem with them.

On the technical side of skiing it makes you alot better. Although park is alot better for being stable on your skis, racing just makes you more aware of how to fully utilize them as the best you can.

Having been in sport at a high level before i have no intrest in being involved in training like what i'm sure racers do. That said, if i ever got a chance to do some racing recreationally i'd take the chance for sure. i'm sure you'd learn something.

Meh, I used to race. A lot of them are cool people, some of them are douchebags. Simple as that

I raced. It sucked waiting around the mountain all day to take like 3 30 second runs. At our mountain the racers get like a bunch of special privileges, so they think they run the place and I have a thing against them. Anywhere else though, I just would say as long as they keep to the race course they are fine

Its a totaly different scene in the midwest. In Minnesota racers are generally way far away from the park and also with regards to lap time, its about a 3 minute wait for a 25 second run, then a 3 minute chairlift. Thats the only good thing about having like 300 vertical feet.

This is a huge problem at my mountain, they use the knuckles of jumps and the little 10 ft jump to practice when they go over those drops in GS courses, but they dont call their drops either so the will snake the shit out of you

I raced for 10 years. Met some of my best friends racing. Like any large group of people though, there were some complete dicks.

All in all racing is great, I just have no rail game as a result of it.

Yeah our mountain sucks. It's definitely bias toward racers in every aspect, but we gotta live with it.

yeah they were always making fun of park skiers jackets...now i realize that a jacket that goes to my knees is so much more comfortable than this

I think there are more asshole jibber kids. They have something to prove i guess. Never had a problem with racers except they always train on the best run on the mountain

this so much. Also when I Raced there were all these racers who were the kids of surgeons and shit and acted like total dickheads. They know absolutely nothing about what it means to be a skier and go on ski vacations to Deer Valley to ski 3 groomers and sleep at a 5 star resteraunt. I wanted to go on a T-Hall real skier rage. Plus who the fuck wants to ski on ice?

i dont race competitively at all but as an instructor it is part of our training, and fuck it is so much fun, as a beginner its such a good feeling to hit gates or ski a good line, not to mention its just going as fast as you can, plus to have coaches that will give you a tip or something to think about after every lap is fucking sweet

Wait a sec.......are you saying racers aren't real skiers? That is absurd, racing is INSANELY gnarly, those guys kill it, and they deserve respect for what they do.

I feel he means their mindset. I agree that good racers (i consider myself decent) are amazing skiers, its just that it seems to be too common that they don't have the same feeling about skiing as park skiers. They look at it as a sport such as swimming where you just try to go faster, instead of something that is really enjoyable and a passion. Although this is by no means true for all racers, it just seems to be a little too common.

because in reality....they are better than 90% of the park skiers out there at park...and almost 98% of park skiers at actual skiing. The only reason were douche bags to park skiers occasionally is because there generally younger kids who have this absurd attitude that they are the king of the mountain. Not all park skiers, mostly the 15-18 crowd i find. There usually pretty awful at normal skiing and swear loud in the liftline, and just act like a general peice of shit

Majority of the racers at my hill are assholes, but I do know a few people who race who are really cool guys also.

I would beg to differ. I have a harder time landing centered doing a rodeo 5 than going through a royal flush through gates. Balance I feel i develop from park, and control is derived from racing. Thats just how I see it.

The only aspect of racing that I can appreciate is just going as fast as possible.

The rest, all the early morning course prep, standing around all day for three runs, waxing and edging in between every run, fancy power ranger suits, and all that garbage, I've broken 70mph on fat as fuck rockered pow skis decked out in xl Saga, I don't need all that racer bullshit...

sparknotes: I just like to go fast.

Hmm this is something I agree with. That makes sense. Anyways when I race its more of a battle with timing and strategy than balance. Your post definitely is true though.

I'm going on my third season of ski cross and I love it. Tracks are fun and the people are way more chill than alpine. Plus I have no doubt whatsoever that it has made me a better skier.

I actually enjoy hitting gates, although you'd never catch me with a pair of slaloms on a pow day and I kind of hate alpine races themselves. I think the whole alpine scene is a little uptight, but there are lots of chill racers and I still have nothing but respect for the skill and balls it takes.

yeah it's just that racers tend to think that they are superior because they are "athletes." At my mountain they're the loud ones in the lift line... and sure, they're often better skiers, but they hate going skiing due to all the ridiculous training. I think it's great to have a racing background and charging gates is fun, but after that it's all about the freeride.

used to race, wish i still did. actually bought some GS skis this year and my god theyre nice to get on every once and awhile

i used to race, met good friends, had a good time, became a good skier, i was good at racing but always found myself jibbing on twin tips, went to freestlye, dont regret it. Racing is still fun and if they are nice to me i like them.

I hate when they go through the park and just go and huck a tail 7 off a jump that I can't. It fucking pisses me off

I haven't had any experiences with them on the mountain but I have to say the ones I've encountered in the lodge have all been absolute assholes. The other day I was trying to go in between two tables and a guy was standing there in his spandex talking to two racer girls who were sitting down. Being a polite person, I smiled at him and asked, "Excuse me, but could I go by you?" The guy turned to face me, looked me up and down, snickered, and went back to talking to the girls. I laughed it off and found another way around, but jesus fucking christ can't you show some common courtesy

basically sums up races at my hill, they fucking run the place. The race team is the reason the park got moved onto the shortest green run on the hill because they wanted a 3rd run to train on.
