Alright, so im most likely going to take a year off between hs and college, and im considering my options...

one of them is being a patroller, and im thinking at a big resort...so my question is, could i live off of this for a season? would i still be able to ski on my own? i know i need to get medical training, is it done through ski patrol?

any other hints or advice would be appreciated..thanks

to become ski patrol alot of resorts require CPR (1&2 rescuer adult and 1 rescuer children.) some type of outdoor rescue. If you have these you go to a center and schedule a ski test once you pass your hired.

you could live of this since alot of times they have staff loging at the bigger resorts so everything you would make would be food and alowance.

the only drawback is that unless you know somebody alot of the bigger resorts require you to be 21 years of age or older.

You need a shit load of certifications and they pay you dirt. Like less than $10/hr. So basically you could do better in the short term being a dishwasher in the hotel kitchen, and still get to ski a ton.

gah.

next.... what about being a lifty? (i like to be on the mountain..)

^^ You could get most of te certifications they require for free at the red cross and the pay is around 8 dollars while your in training and goes up to like 12-14 dollars once you are no longer in training.

Im going to be ski patrol for a little bit while I figure out what im going to do to stay on the mountain for the rest of my life

whats the pay/work load on park crews at bigger resorts like intrawest types?

often times youve gotta have a first responder certification. not really hard to get though.

You're a Canadian?

If so, working at a big resort is wicked. You'll get paid dirt, you need your first aid certificate... 80hr class and 400$ (correct me if i'm wrong, kinda guessing the cost)... You get shit loads of skiing in but being a liftee or a trail crew worker is almost as good and you don't have to deal with the people as much. You make enough to live off of if you live in staff accomodation... the rest goes towards booze and food. Word of warning though, you won't save ANY money. I was a liftee last season at Lake Louise, the season after I graduated, tons of fun. Staff accomodation is super fun and cheap, don't expect to get tons of sleep though.

well, sadly, no, i'm not canadian...will that dash my dreams of working in canada? i have both american and dutch citizenship...not that it would really help..

you say being a lifty or trail crew would be almost as good...why almost?

its pretty hard to get on a park crew, and like every other job you'll probably get min wage or slightly above. if your gonna pull a season do it the right way.. work like a bitch all summer and take the whole winter off.

i was thinking of planting trees all summer...well, thats what my mom suggested...

i dont know if i'd be able to make enough to live off of it all summer.

Almost... because being a partroller you're skiing all the time every day... Being a trail crew, you ski a fair bit but not all day, same with being a liftee. You have to take the course to get first aid or whatever it is you need in the US... It's just a question of how much you wanna ski and whether its worth taking the course for a winter of skiing. You can probably get a work visa although I'm not sure how difficult it'd be, you'd have to look into that.

The majority of ski patrollers are pro-bono. They get a free season pass, and thats about it. Go for a job at the resort teaching people, or do what i do and put up ads at local ski shops that say 'PRIVATE SKI LESSONS!'

I'm a patroller in CO and you gotta have OEC and CPR certs. Thats it though. OEC is through the national ski patrol, and basically you just gotta go through that class and then you can patrol almost anywhere. Patrolling is a sick job just cuz you get to ski all day, and its sick to get up on a powder day and get to ski all the closed stuff, but it doesn't pay very well, unless you go to some really rich ski resort that actually wants to spend money on their patrol. But its way worth it to do it for a few winters, even though it doesn't pay very much just cuz its such a sick job, the stuff you get to see and do is sweet

Plant trees? like in the forest? isn't every thing covered with snow? Oh and dont ba a lift operator. every one I have known that did that job hated it, and did not get to ski as much as they thought they would.

Don't teach! Instructors make OK money when they are getting the hours... which is on and off especially if you're new to the hill. Sometimes they barely get enough hours to pay for their staff accom...

It depends on the hill, being a liftee at some hills is great and at others it's shitty. Just gotta look into how it's run at that particular hill beforehand.

ski tech is a pretty chill job plus you get hook ups on cheap gear and get to meet all the reps.
