Ski Patrol is it worth it?

I'm thinking about doing it this year. I'm 17, and I want to know if it's fun at all. I know its work, and I'm down for it. Because I want to put this on my college application. I only get to ski every other weekend, but this will be an excuse for my parents to let me ski. Should I do it? The class schedule is pretty rigorous, but it will pay off I guess with the free ski pass, and all that shit. Thanks.

ya it's worth it...you get to see some nasty injuries, but if you like it, it can lead to a paid position which is even better.

i think so, but not the type of patrol that has to get mad at people. a good patrol has gotta be chill with people who break the rules

i'm not sure how it works at your mountain, but ski patrol aren't alowd to hit the park features. I suppose it is better than instructing little kids though. now THATS a bitch

Nah, if you're a park instructor for beginners, it can actually be kinda fun. I did it just over Christmas break once. You get somewhat decent pay and you get to watch the kids you're teaching eat shit after you tell them that the 100 foot stepdown is a lot smaller than it looks.

THe ski intsructor thing is def. not worth it...a couple of my buddies did it last year and basically you do all the grunt work and there is not much time to freeeski at all

yeah dude i did it for 3 years and it is definately worth it, got to ski for free, and i didnt really do a whole lot of work since i was a junior. i just got to ski around a lot and cut lines and i would help somebody about once every two days i was up there, so i pretty much got to ride all day. i would only do it every other weekend though, because i wanted to go ride with my friends somewhere else. and its most definately good for college apps.

What i would do is become an instructor an only do one class the whole day and then just ride for the rest of the day, thats how it is at my mountain.

 
^ let them be as long as they arent ignorant fucks when it comes to park ediquite. But a lot of patrollers at stratton are pricks, but also pussies. They will yell from the lift then we will yell back and they will tell us to "wait right there" and then they never show up.

Im not planning on being able to hit the park anyway which I sorta understand. Im a shitty freeskier anyway, so I dont do much when I'm free. It would either be at a local hill or Bear Creek, in Pennsylvania. its got a decent park for Pa, but I almost might check out Blue Mtn. cause they have a high speed lift. and I hate slow lifts. so im looking all over the area

its good... most of the time you can go off and do your own thing anyway, have a good ski.. plus no lift lines, first lift on powder days etc..

try getting into working at your park thats what i do i get paid to open and close the park make the jumps the way i like to ski them and then i ski the park all day and all i really have to do is carry around a radio to call in to ski patrol if anyone gets hurt

i know ski patrols can carry u down the mountain but i was skiing wit some friends and we had a small jump that was only good for 180s and some grabs but it was really fun and like 10 ski partols skied by and they didnt care and then to old ones say u can build jumps they said that it blocked everyone skiing down the hill and the jump was like off in the powder where no1 skied and they started to wreck it....we were so pissed

ski mounatins are not allowed to permit people to build enhanced features without prior approval...it sucks but thats life...

even having terrain parks is a tenuous situation..next time ask the park crew or go BC...theres a reason why u dont see much big jump footy from mountains

its fd up but thats the deal...if you want to use their lifts u gotta listen to their rules...

wow.. it would be funny as hell if u patroled and then some kids built a kicker or w/e and you say take it downa shit and they say something like shut up old udde that cant hit shit and then just pull a cork 7 and be like take it down.. haha that be mad epic... but all in all i would do it if i had more time... college and puttin in the hours dont work for me so... i would like to do that though... def. do it!
 
Do it. Believe me, anything to do with skiing is awesome. If you love skiing as much as I do, you will love it. I tought at a tiny ass hill in NY this year, was so fun to be on the snow 5 days a week instead of only once. i would ride park after lessons, giving me 2 hours a day on weekdays and 7+ hours on saturday. It was sweet, i just love being on skis and snow.
 
as much as i hate the ski patrol... i think its definatly worth it. as long as ur not one of the douche bag ski patrols.
 
It's a rewarding job it seems,if you wanna help people and do bitch work go for it. Working for a mountain in a skiing position seems like it would really suck though, unless you are coaching a team. My bro started instructing at Vail so he could ski more, now he gets like a handful of days a season to freeski, and the rest of his countless days are wiping little kids asses and dealing with shit. I guess having private lessons with chill kids is really rewarding but other than that, It basically ruined skiing for him. Also When he is in uniform there is a rule where you are not allowed to fall because It reflects badly on the resort, so he is constantly skiing like a pussy not progressing or pushing his limits becuase when he falls, he gets bitched out if someone sees him. I'm sure it is quite similar for Ski Patrol. People on the mountain want to be able to look up to you and trust you, skiing park and wiping out isn't conducive to that I guess.
 
you get more skiing around than you would as an instructor and for the amount of time you work you actually get paid decently but most patrollers are asses in my experiances.
