Ski Pass Taken Away

I'm soo tired of this I have had my ski pass taken away 3 times this year.  It really fucking sucks a lot.

1st time was for drinking and smashing a champange bottle ( crissining) a chair on the mtn @ whistler blackcomb.

2nd time was at kicking hoarse, there was some sweet lines just over the ski area boundary line, we did 2 runs on it, our 3rd run down the full chute we got caught and kicked off kicking hoarse.    - understandable as we coulda have caused an avalanch putting ourselves in danger.  But we drove 13 hours from whistler to ski there and were a bit choaked afterwards.

3rd This weekend  skied under the cliff sign and way offf the left of the cirque, then hit the bottom of don't think.   Some dickwad civilian phoned in and said we wreer skiing out of bounds, i got back up the chiar and get my pass yanked again....but i didn't ski in any permenatly closed areas, we just took a special way that didn't go through any of those signs which most people don't take. So showed the ski patroler how we got into where we wheer and stuff and then got my pass back. but its still super stressful and annoying to have your pass taken away. I hate it.

I don't undertsand why they are trying to crack down on this stuff so much more this year? I have never gotten in any trouble for any of it before.....and tis not liek there has been higher incidents of death adn accidents and they are more affraid of being sued so they have to crack down....but really nothing has chnaged that i know of and they are just being super hard asses about it now compaired to before. One of the Ullr girls got her pass yanked for a month or 2 for skiing the weekend shoots this year.... why the sudden harshness?

Any one else had misfortunate events?

at okemo in the beginning of the season me and my friend collided at the bottom of a trail and got both our passes taken away. some gay new policy shit, we were real mad

Liability forces resorts to err on the side of caution. Liability is caused the few out of the many who will not take responcibility for their actions and accept that they can be injured or die skiing, and that these risks are part of any worthwhile sport. Resorts are covering their asses, and it is up to the populace to stop abusing the system.

Liability has become a larger problem for resorts in a legal world where, increasingly, lawsuits over faults that should belong to the individual are externalized to the context the individual is acting in.

Also, I wonder if also contributing to the recent crackdown is the costs of putting on rescues?

Since you're a BC native, I'd suggest moving your back country riding to smaller resorts, especially those in the interior, that have far more lax rules for that sort of skiing. Red and Whitewater have been great in that respect.

Or, you can finally give up on the crap that local resorts put us through and start touring.

In the end, it's no-one fault really. You want to ride the good lines, the resort wants to make sure it can stay in operation financially. I'd suggest being sneaky, or riding in new ways as I suggested above.

yeah it just wierd that they are cracking down on all this liability bull shit even more, people need to gorw up and take responsibility for thier own actions.....like european resorts.

I'm gonna tour more, i just need more friends that are into it and know what they are doing.

its gay and they do it a lot cuz of liability but i have been asked almost every time i go at the bottom for an id because apparaently i dont look like my picture which is bullshit but ive been threatened for goin for me what is slow on a groomer to get to the park and the speeder controls think that u need to walk down a run to be goin slowly even when you are in control but ya its gay

That's what I was tempted to discuss in my post - the differences between European and North American Ski resorts

I stress that this is entirely speculative. It is recognized that North America is a much more lawsuit-happy culture, in comparison to Europe. But, the country most dedicated to engaging in law suits over any injury, no matter how small and irrelevant, is the United States.

Recently, ie. the last 5 or so years, Americans have come to ski Whistler and the other mountains quite frequently as a vacation destination. Could it now be that resorts are now protecting themselves against an influx of individuals (Americans) that are prone to engaging in lawsuits over any injury they may suffer. In this context, Resorts such as whistler as punishing BC riding as a sort of prevention that assumes all riders could be, or take, an American legal approach?

Just some of my thoughts on the topic.

On another note, I'm just getting into touring properly next season with an experienced buddy. If you're looking for someone to learn with next season, I'm up for it. PM me.

And liability is what matters, because illegidly on the back of your pass it removes the mountain from liability, but they may as well leave it blank because it doesnt even matter in a court case, mountains always lose.

ive gotten my pass taken away a bunch but they are soo good at finding you, i an idea, we all buy more then 1 jacket and switch off every time we go up so they dont recognize us, wait i dont have enough money

a lady walked up to me with scissors in hand and before i had time to react, she grabbed and clipped. then i killed her

shit that sucks i almost lost my pass for "fighting" with my friend. apparantly the okemo definition of "fighting" is skiing close to another person while talking to them.

yeah it sucked so bad, we didn't even really have a serious incident, at the bottom of a trail where it opened up, he cut me off on his board and clipped my tips and i got spun around and kept going backwards and he caught an edge and fell, and got back up and kept going. we went down to the ski patrol office to try and fight it, and their stubborn asses wouldn't hear it, they showed us some "new policy." it suuucked

^haha that 'new policy' has been going on for at least a year probably more okemo's been constantly pushing for that 'family mountain' image bullshit and while they did a great job with the park this year, it is not the place to go if you want to get any real skiing done.

Wait, so you knew you were in the wrong when you got your pass pulled but you're still mad about it? Maybe I'm biased because I work at a mountain, but this just seems like a common sense thing. Just today we had to pull a couple snowboarders passes because we specifically told them it was their last run when they got on the chair 10 minutes late, yet they still ducked a rope and got behind patrol doing sweeps....right underneath the chairlift. If you're going to knowingly break rules at a mountain at least be smart about it. This is the same as getting mad about getting pulled over when you drive 100 on the highway every day.

you got nothin to be mad about bro. first two times were compeltely your fault (particularly #1, that's just stupid) and the third time the patrollers realized that you were right and the people who called them were wrong so they gave you your pass back. what are you complaining about? this weekend my friend got his pass pulled for doing a 180 like 6 inches in the air going like 5 mph. like an hour later the ski patroller came off his power trip and admitted that it wasn't that bad and gave my friend a new pass, generally if you are nice to them they will eventually be cool in the heat of the moment a lot of patrollers just like taking advantage of their power.

and seriously... smashing a bottle on a lift... wtf?

i dont know who you got your pass taken away at kicking horse. they let you pretty much go anywhere there and even if you do hike out of bounds or something they dont care cause theres signs that sasy beware of avalanche danger and proceed with caution because theres no rescue

I am just syaing they are being power sucking way over cautious nazis, this is not the way the world should operate, the mtns are a place of freedom, thats why i love skiing. We all know skiing is a very dangerous sport and we acknowledge these risks and take part in them when we buy our passes and go skiing.  i am just saying that the rules are way too strict and people need to get back to the basics.

the 1st one was deffy my bad and i deserved it, the second one millions of other peeps did it without conciquence, and we became the people who they made a point out of....this mostly sucked due to the 13 hours drive associated with it.  (Mind you the tracks were some of the best i have ever had and i would do it again in an instant)  And the third time just pisses me off because someone would take the time to call in a reprt about skiers skiing where they are not suppose to, then the ski patrollers actually come out looking for us, and take action, even though we actually didn't do what they thought........and relying on civilian sources for calling in someone out of bounds? thats craka shit. If the ski patrollers see you do it right in front  of them then yea sure you deserve to get caught, but hunting down people when you didn't even see them do it??? jea, i am just not chied about this whole thing.

I always heavily reinforce my tickets. A ticket can still be clipped through 12 wickets, but it takes a really really long time and always successfully aggravates patrol. But a better trick is just to have a jacket shell you can ditch in the woods if you think patrol are chasing you. And fortunately most patrol aren't particularly great skiers and can just be outrun.

if you want to be mad at anyone, find people who have sued mountains for anything and beat the shit out of them.

HUGE REVELATION, sliding down a slippery surface on equipment you are strapped into surrounded by trees, rocks, other people and variable light can be dangerous. SO STOP FUCKING SUEING WHEN YOU HURT YOURSELF.

as much as it riles me when shit like this happens, mountains hands are tied. they either are seen to be cracking down or they are sued into obscurity by the next gaper who ducks a rope.

end of the day, its customers who cause the problem. and if we wana stretch the rules, we gotta cop the consequences if we get caught.

<-had a stolen corporate pass taken from me at Stratton. Wasn't surprised, or all too upset, though it sucked big time. Still got to ski from like 9-3

ass holes that use liability to their advantage over gay shit have ruined pretty much all the fun stuff for everyone else

You guys must get it pretty harsh. Over here in NZ they never really crack down on this kind of stuff, you can just explain to them you know what your doing and they are normally pretty sweet about it.

well here in BC they dropped the 3 clip rule, its just....we take your pass away first strike now. soo fucking gay....second off i got arrested tongiht on campus for climbing treees. the dud e was such a fucking dick, i mena i am drunk, but here he is calling me and asshole and fucking douchbag, and i am actually saying okey sir, i undertsbnad your concern, and i won't do it agian and just being as poliet about it as i can and he is the bigggest fucking douch e ever, thats what i hate is i am a fucking suck up when i get in nshit and super politet and admit what i ddi is wrong and they always act liek full on fucking power tripping cock sukceers. this guy was suck a fucking douche tongiht and escorted me home for cllimbing tressss, wtf???? he was swearing at me and just going o9ff at how much of a horrible person i was for doing that, yet i was soo polite to him.............not cool at alll, i guess this is the kind of jobs fucking jerk asses burn outs get and for some reaosn they try to take it seriously.

there are clear warnings that say "Permanently Closed Areas, passes will be revoked".

Is that not enough warning?

I have ducked those ropes more than once, but never been in any trouble. However, I have gotten to pretty shit your pants areas...

If you are going to poach, you should poach well at least. Weekend chutes are a pretty damn visible place, why would you even be surprised that this chick got caught...

Ok, now a good tip since you ride W/B. Keep a 7/11 lift ticket in your pocket, that way you can just give that to the patrol rather than your season's pass.

yeah.,.. but really...people just dont want to admid that its there fault they crossed there tips and fell on there face.... but no ... they sue the company for neglgence and then your tickets are 80 bucks a day, and your season pass is a grand... and now if your skiing to fast making turns... or just playing grabass with your freinds.. your pass is grass!

i always have the pass in my pocket so, it cant be seen, i have been asked many times this year for my pass, and half the time i say i lost it or i just ski off

At meadows they've been clipping corners off season passes just for going fast in a "comfort zone" which is basically the entire mountain except for the double blacks.

^ yea companies are getting too greedy and sucking the tourist's cocks.  pretty much any run that isn't a double black you can get your pass yanked for skiing too fast. Luckily your always skiing to fats to get cuaght unless they radio down and have peeps wiating for you at the chiar, in which case you have to go home.

I'm also 90% sure anyone drunk on the mtn holding a champange bottle would think of crissing a chiar, its pretty much the first thin that pops into you head, and it seeems highly approproate at the time.   - When the cops asked me why i did it i said it was in the heat of the moment and it seemed approproiate.

power lines trail at attitash is a sick one to ski but if ski patrol catches people they seek illigal action. Sucks!

why would anyone phone want to phone in someone skiing out of bounds. Whenever you see anyone out of bounds, they know what they are doing. If i ever get the chance to go out west and see someone skiing out of bounds i'll say to myself hey, that must be some really nice snow over there.

That's the ticket. 7/11 saves the day.

I didn't know they didn't clip anymore though. My 90s season's passes all have 2 corners clipped -- mainly for poaching the old West Bowl chutes... I mean they *used* to be open, so wtf..

I hear you on Cirque though -- and that's very cool and somewhat lucky you got yr pass back, as face it, you were right on the boundary edge there of the perm area which is a no fall zone and the last thing they want is someone biting an edge and dying in front of Pika's and the Peak chair off that second cliff line..

Come to think of it, that would be pretty fuckin' funny..

But yah WHISTLER these days is a joke, I mean, I worry about hitting one of those ridiculous green 'FAMILY ZONE' poles heading down for a beer at Chic Pea... Blackcomb doesn't treat the entire mountain as a Family Park at least.. Whistler is going to the dogs by comparison...

I've never gotten in trouble with the ski patrol, I don't know why. I'm always skiing off the trail or going fast in slow zones and shit like that, but no one has ever said a thing. I think I'm going to deliberately do something stupid to see what the patrollers do. Only problem is I have a season pass and I'd hate to get that taken away. Maybe on a day trip to a small mt.

I'll keep that in mind as I get better at switch.

On a side note, there's only one patroller I've ever seen who was good. We were in Anarchy at Killington and he came ripping through. He told us to be careful and he was gone.

ive been stopped by ski patrol multiple times for gonig on trails that were closed" to hit jumps, and going to fast which is shit. they always give me warnings and i just take off with out lsitening. if they ever tried to take my pass i would just board down as fast as i could and just leave. they cant use any forece totake your pass away they cant do shit just run away

Same with ducking ropes. if you duck you no what your getting into. Ski patrop; shouldnt give a shit, but if you get hurt than they cound charge you i guess

I thought i never would say this, but this is what The US and canada has become with all these stupid fucking people suing everyone for every fucking little thing.

We don't have this problem at all here in Europe
