Ski movies suck

i enjoyed your movie this year more than any in a long time. really down to earth. just a bunch of dudes stoked to be skiing

En Route and DIO are the only films from this year that it is possible to watch without boring one self to death. My god, PBP?! it is so long! I would rather send my daughter to a work camp in Germany during ww2 than to watch that shit again! If another skimovie has an interview where some random ass skier says "Skiing to me is all about blending in to the environment, having a good time with my friends. I got my best friend through skiing, I have sucked more dick than the distance between LA and NY" its jihad bitches

I hate ski movies. all they are good for is making me remember that someone, somewhere, is skiing :( . and because of that I MAND

I think it depends on which movies you're watching. Cause yeah, some suck but others may be good...just like any other kind of movie.

well modern skiing vids are more about the art than the sport. Seriously in every 3 minute segment, at least half of it is scenery and mood shots.

It's all about mixing trends with traditions. When Ski Movie 1 through 3 had inventive intros, really giving out a "movie" feel. Some loved them, while others called them contrived, which is fair enough because of the blatant slomo shots for every sponsor. I for one did not enjoy any Saucer Boy stuff, but it seems a lot of of you actually did.

I think Voleurz is now picking up some of that same feel. Some of the stuff does feel a bit too quirky and contrived, but it's definitely the right direction. Anything but athlete interviews if they have nothing to add to the table - in PBP's case, I don't know, the best interview clip they've ever had was Evan Raps' explanation of Tanner's superiority on the skiing scene.

Gonna have to disagree. Watched it last night, while its cool to see the mountaineering and such, that was NOT what I was looking for in a movie. I personally prefer the variation of interviews, lifestyle, park, backcountry, comedy, etc etc that has come up recently. In my opinion the movie should represent last season, the trials and tribulations, the travel, the down time, the banger shots...JMO.

so true snowboarding is great, also on another note i think that the ski films this year were not up to par, revolver made me want to die, no more dubstep

I don't mind hearing them talking, but only if its either explaining some hilarious situation, a joke (saucer boy!) or a brief, quick interview. I absolutely hate 5 minutes of slow mo sunset shots while some guy says things like "man, the mountains are just magic. I love being here. I love skiing. In the mountains. The deep snow, and the...skiing on the deep snow covered mountains. It gives me a real winter vibe and that makes it all worth it."

skiing gives most of us some deep reflective thoughts, but whenever a pro tries to put it into words, it ends up awful. I don't mind a quick "woke up to snow covered peaks. Magical. I love IT!" But beyond that and it drags.

Did you not think it did that? Most other films don't even talk about the trials and tribulations, or the down time. When they do they tend to just take 10 seconds...

I think movies need to be more like the Team Canada video from JOSS last year, granted that was just an edit and not a full length film. I think it's easier to convey how fun the ski life is by showing the athletes having fun as opposed to interviews. For example, the Chug Macarana rail was pure gold. Or "Oh my god, I nearly died. That was serious death!" Also the lack of gangster rap and dubstep gave it a cheerier mood.

A really good film will convey feelings through the editing of the material, not the choice of songs. I abhor the new trend that if you throw any feel-good song in your edit/movie, the comments are usually "This is real skiing" or "This really made me want to ski, and gave me a happy vibe!" No shit! It's a happy song.

The formula is happy/funny song + goofing around * no need for big tricks = A representation of honest, real skiing.

No. It's all in the hands of the editor. You don't think the Revolver crew had enough falls, mucking around and other hijinxs to put together at least large sections of such actions? It all falls to the director's, sponsors' and editor's wishes how things will go down.

Still, I have no objection for a large genre of different music to edit to, but sometimes I do not know what was going on in the person responsible's head (Olenick Bros. - These boots are made for walking; Kristi and co. - Get your hands off of my woman; Mahre - White Rabbit).

I'm addressing your whole post but I didn't want to quote all of it and take up space.
Personally, I think it makes a huge difference. Yes, editing the actual footage is a more integral part of setting the mood. For some reason when I watch edits with glitch mob/dubstep or gangster rap it sets a rather "We take ourselves super serious look at how steezy we are" vibe that I don't like. When Team Canada used Elliott Brood, it set a more "we ski because we want to, I don't give a shit what anyone else thinks" vibe that I like better. I always prefer it when people do stuff for themselves and not because it will make them look cool to others or something.
I agree that the notion that the music makes the skiing "real" or not is dumb but I've never felt that was the case anyway.
That's all imho. That's how I feel about the music, you don't have to agree.

What's wrong with glitch mob? Haha just playing but I think the most important thing is to pick music that goes with the segment otherwise it isn't the same imo

Of course, I wouldn't think any different.

But we also have to think of the athletes point of view. If we go back to Level 1's Strike Three and Forward, Derek Finn was not too happy about his portrayal in the movies. In the first mentioned, he was shown throwing fits after bailing on a rail, in the second his part was only rails, although he claims he had a lot of jump material filmed. (If he comes to claim otherwise, I digress, this is what I remember being discussed very openly on NS).

What about today's normal/super pros? Do they care how they are portrayed in their segments? We all know the B-Dog/Harlaut MethRed scene, but what about those "grey area" athletes? Are they building a segment by going to shoots, or are they going to shoots to build a segment? It's all in the details and you might hope for an epic, balls-to-the-wall heavy metal seggy and end up with a thrice-divided segment to Swollen Members.

^ That is all very true! I guess I was thinking more of a Nimbus approach where the Athletes are the editors. I can totally see how skiers in larger film companies could end up removed from the editing process and how the music doesn't necessarily reflect the skiers attitude when they were filming.

I forgot to reply to your other post! I know you were joking but honestly there is nothing wrong with glitch/dubstep I listen to it quite frequently, I just don't enjoy it in ski videos as much.

Yeah I know what you mean and I agree with what someone said up there about how the music shouldn't play such a big role because it takes the emphasis off the skiing

i dont mind a little intelligent commentary. but it definitely can be a little hard to stomach when a skier with a sub 55 iq drones on for 3 minutes about how stoked he was to see the jump for the first time.

Worst lines:

"Everyone sees the hill in a different way"

"We all share this one passion"

"When you're floating through the air..."

"That's just life, that's just what we do"

"Ssssssiiiiick"

In terms of storytelling, go and download/watch "Undermovie" from IsenSeven. It's in German, but has English subs. Best narration I've seen in sports movies.

I agree and I don't. I thought The Way I See It was a great movie. I honestly couldn't watch all of Eye trip or Revolver though. I found network pretty fresh as well. It was a shorter movie but kept you entertained the whole time. So some did suck, others did not. And snowboard movies are really sick because it's all crazy urban and they make it look good.
