Ski movies suck

Is it just me or is anyone else sick of hearing skiers talk in movies lately? I just bought two films on iTunes that where really well reviewed here on newschoolers and I'm not sure I will ever buy another one again. If I hear "Skiing is getting sick, in a few years it's gonna be ...really sick." "Europe has a lot of trains". I'm done. I'd rather watch an Absinthe snowboard movie (all the way back to vivid and saturation) than any ski movie made in the last five years. The music's boring and slick, what the fuck happened to punk or even some underground hip hop. Skiing is leading the way on the mountain but lags by years on film.

agreed on the interviews.

not so sure if i really want any more punk music in ski movies, but i'd be more willing to hear that than this recent influx of electronic/glitch/dubstep awfulness in videos.

agreed. a lot of skiers sound half retarded when they talk and it just pissed me off. a little voice clip here and there but a audio between every single segment is sooooo annoying.

Obvious troll but good discussion. I personally like interviews but they are always the same old it was crazy but i did it. Give some more insight. The music is getting old, we always go in trends. Personally my favorite movies were Come find us and network. I just liked the vibe they gave.

I feel like it might work best if they stuck the interviews in the extras. That way people who didn't care about them wouldn't have to see them and they could go more into detail for those that are interested. Sometimes I feel like the interviews are just stuck in to bulk the movie up which really bothers me. I'm happier after a solid 30min film than a 45min one that is filled with tons of footage of guys talking about how extreme alaska is or how they got busted by the cops while shooting urban. I'm not going to feel ripped off paying just as much money for the shorter one.

i was gonna be all angrylike at the OP for the thread title..then i read the rest of it and i kind of agree.

I kinda feel like they say the same thing a lot of the time... But somehow they are a necessary part of the movie. It makes it more of a story. For example, I didn't like eye trip that much because it kinda just felt like one long edit. The skiing was great but the movie just lacked a personality. My $.02

The majority of ski movies have turned from being a movie to being a super ridiculously long edit. You need a plot, characters, discussion in a movie. It doesn't even need to be blatant. Glen Plake summed it up perfectly in his Edge of Never interview.
It's why I liked The Way I See It so much, Colby just added so much to that movie. Sure, the skiing is awesome in pretty much all of the movies out these days but there's only so many hours you can watch of skiing matched with music.

There's nothing more brutal than an interview that doesn't scratch the surface and gets used.

yo could you recomment me a snowboard movie on itunes that came out this year then? id love to know what im missing haha.

it can be used well, the problem is they seem to always pick the most cliche clips possible.

i thought that for the most part at least, all the interviews in TWISI were quite enjoyable, and not your typical "skiing is the bestest thing ever" quotes of the past.

however revolvers interviews were awful. they were redundant, uninteresting, and nothing we havent heard 100 times before. same with contrast the year before. yes you love skiing, thats pretty obvious since your career of choice is a professional skier. now shut yer yapper and give me more skiing footy!

Except for your's hommie. The only interviews were about where they went and why. Kept a great vibe.

Sorry, it always seems like I'm riding Stept's dick.

Skiers are not well known for their grammatical skills or public speaking. Especially to non-skiers, who look over my shoulder when I'm watching a ski flick, these guys are kids in baggy clothing talking like they'd expect them to. That being said, as a skier myself I'm interested in hearing from these pros who we'd normally recognize through in new Oakley jacket and skullcandy bandannas.
I find it interesting when the audience gets to see into the personal life of the pros off the slopes and in the condo they rented for a week or their home. A little creativity mixed in with the whole process of the typical ski movie adds a personality you can like or hate on. Like Nimbus representing their own style by bringing something new to the table. Much respect for those guys and the film makers trying something new and different and it takes a lot of experimenting to find something that works really well.
Each company tries to convey something to their viewers. Some want to give insight on an athlete's perspective on the sport, or maybe show how many parties they go to, or show what it's like to take a cross country powder trip. Like the Traveling Circus goes beyond the slopes and takes the stars off their skis and into the real world. It's very entertaining and is always fresh. They get creative with editing styles and story lines. It's a way of pioneering into a different wave of ski movies/edits.

May or may not be what you guys are looking for, but we tried desperately to have a different feel, flow, and real stories to our film and for a "pay what you want" rate for download every skier should at least give it a whirl. We've been getting nothing but rad reviews so farhttp://dendrite.myshopify.com/

personally, I like the interview parts of movies. They break it up, and if done well give it better flow--and also make it more of a movie, and less of a really long edit--makes it more interesting/watchable for me at least. For instance, i could never sit through an entire Rage film, because it was just like watching an hour long edit--however, i can watch movies like The Way i See it, or Refresh, because its broken up with interviews/narrations and gives it more of a story feel--while still being focused on sick segments.

Thats just my opinion tho.

I thought the editing/soundtrack was on point in Eye Trip. I do think skiers need to start doing some more creative urban though, snowboarders are way ahead of us there.

Come find us and NetWork, you cant apply all of that two these two as they killed it, soundtrack was dope and vibe was great, however revolver plain sucked and i liked neally all eyetrips music bar the song on the helsinki part i cant see how they thought that one was a good idea.

i was thinking 'this thread is gonna be stupid' when i clicked on it but then i read your post a kinda agreed with you. i don't think its fair to say all ski movies are totally shitty and aren't worth getting, but i see what your saying.
also what movies did you get?

thomas vanderhams night whistler seggy is up on youtube and it sucks. the whole thing is slomo, literally ever single shot. so painful to get through.

lemme guess, you haven't seen the movie? yup probably true because if you have you'd know that this seggy fits in perfectly with the film and there's plenty of regular speed shots to balance it out. idiot.

Holy sweet Jesus!!!

Now that I got that out of my system. I like ski films that have kind of a story line or direction. That's why I love Nimbus so much. I also really like Voleurz's and Meathead's stuff. Ski movies that capture the essence of skiing are the ones that get me stoked and are the ones I watch over an over again.

I prefer actual lifestyle footage to regular cliché interviews. The footage of the athletes just being people.

i like having interviews between segments. i find it breaks it up and considering alot of people are crazy fanboys about tom walish or watever its nice to get a little bit of their personality. I will agree that i am tired of people just saying skiing has come a long way. but i like it when they say t"his year we went to --- because ---- it was really fun we did stuff like ---- "then the segment. troll me if you disagree but thats Just how i like em

THolt- "I like ski films that have kind of a story line or direction. I prefer actual lifestyle footage to regular cliché interviews. The footage of the athletes just being people."
That is the entire direction of our new film Out of the Shadows. Tagline, "We are more than just skiers."
We didn't show it in interviews. We showed it in lifestyle intermixed into segments to show allow the viewer to relate more to the skiing and get a sense of who the person is behind the specific style of skiing. I think certain people's styles just fit with who they are outside of skiing.
And lifecycles is beyond sick. They deserve all the support they can get!
