Everyone's talking about backcountry booters. I like to see the stuff where there's no jump involved, like seth doing a rodeo 7 off a cliff in the backcountry. or some dude 180ing a cliff somewhere. I'm not talking about big mountain lines with trees, I'm talking about places where there are trees, there's so much unique terrain there that's so much harder than and so much more unique than any park hit.
There are so many gaps, hips, step downs and all that in so many places in the backcountry, and nothing looks sicker (in my opinion) than some guy dropping a decent sized cliff, gapping trees. I hit a drop like that this year except it wasn't really big and they were like midget trees but it was hella fun.
I'm sure if every person on here who's never skied true back country powder were to come skinning with me & my friends to the top of my home mountain, you'd be so stoked on the possibilities.
Let me describe my run:
At the Top:
Windblown snow with a slight crust usually, easy to break though, fun to ride. The terrain is pretty flat but you can pick up speed, occasionally I'll ride this fakie. On the way down there are all sorts of drops and jumps created totally by the wind and what few trees are up there. It's sick stuff. The jumps are mellow and fun.
Nearing the trees:
Cliffs, smaller drops, steep lines, little kickers, super fun stuff, occasionally will just straightline, most of the time I'll get in some turns, feels soooooo gooooood.
In the trees:
Find all sorts of open spots with drops in and drops out, the snow is pretty slid out and tracked, screw up in here and you're screwed, my friend crashed and we found his skis 6 feet down buried in the snow... 15 minutes later.
Into the gully:
Steep & deep or a right-out huck in. You can take a line or just drop the whole thing. Drops range from something like 80 feet to 5 feet. I usually take a steep line or chute though, lasts longer, more fun. Occasionally I'll take a chute then huck off the side but those are pretty hard to land.
Exit Gully:
Ski out on a hard packed bumpy run-out onto a diamond run.
The Sequel
While on the diamond run, cut over to the left and drop back into the gully. it's tighter and steeper, thus more fun. Isn't usually a run-out though.
That's like 30 minutes of straight skiing there, after an hour long skin that's super fun. There are like 10 different routes I can take with all sorts of terrain with different sized drops, different amounts of steeps, and different sized chutes.
I'd take 30 minutes of skiing that over a day of park. Not to mention i'd much rather see it in movies, so much more unique and interesting to watch a line with a cliff at the end rather than park hit after park hit. BTW, I'm not talking about big mountain, because a lot of times that does bore me although I'd be so stoked on riding it. It's the terrain in the glades that's so sick. Just watch the baker movie from theory-3, that's like what I ski and it's fun shit.
