do ski or snowboard film companies ever release numbers? like what their budget was/is ? what their sales were in videos and dollars? what sponsors paid them
 
Why would they?

Maybe pm JoshB, and see what the go is with Level1 - even still, it's all priviliged information - particularly anything concerning financials.
 
^so maybe 10,000 sold would be more reasonable? at 30 bucks a pop that is 300,000 and maybe a $100,000 from sponsors. so a big company would have a $300,000 to 400,000 budget for one movie. maybe...?
 
It's easy to get distorted views about things like this when you look at the demographic on a website like this. It's easy to form a perception that 'everyone buys them'

I'd say a massive majority of ski movie sales would go to NS.com and TGR members, then the subscribers to Powder and Freeskier mags - outside of that, it would probably be scattered with a few % here and there out of retail stores..

Think about rockclimbing or skydiving movies - similar subcultures to what we have, and i'm sure the figures would be similar (rockclimbing would probably exceed numbers for ski movie sales)

I give so much props out to ski movie filmers because it must take such hard work, most of the year. On top of that you have massive costs which aren't regained until people actually buy the movie (E.g. the Heli cost for the Keystone shoot in Realtime, Accomodation, Transportation etc) - that shit is super expensive.

Sponsors would need to play a massive part in helping with budgeting, but either way I don't think there are too many millionaires in the ski-movie making business - all for the love of the sport. I'd definitely be stoked to do it.

It's for these reasons that things such as posting links for downloads of ski movies on the net is so frowned upon here. The $30 is easily justified.
 
That would be nice if that's the way it worked, but unfortunately, the majority of sales go through distribution companies, and the film company might make $3-$8 per unit. So, obviously the revenue goes way down, which is why sponsorships are so important to cover costs up front. No snowsport companies make a whole lot of money (snowboarding definitely did well in the mid-late 90s before competition came in for Standard, Mack Dawg and others). There's so much competition, and I think most of what everyone makes goes right back into the company.
 
they only $3-8 per unit? no way. really? that seems real low. but my esimates seemed real high. so what would a budget be for pbp, msp, mack dawg or someone like that?
 
it can cost even more depending on what materials you use in the case, how big the booklet is, how many dvd's, etc.

No one will ever find out a direct budget from a company, they wont share that. But the budgets are based on mostly on sponsors at the beggining of the season from what i could tell. Yes there is a little to be made from DVD's but it vary's from company to company i'm sure, again based on what you want your case to be made of, look like, how big your booklet is, etc. But at the end of the day you help the company best if you directly buy from there site or the company.
