Ski Magazine

Ive been thinking about subscribing to a ski magazine lately. I bought a Powder mag to check it out and it was alright. Kind of boring, with very short articles. Anyone else have experience with Powder? The next one on the list is Freeskier. I havnt had a chance to read any but I will probably pick one up in the near future. Any feedback on Freeskier? Those are the only 2 Ski mags i know. What are some other good ones that you are subscribed to NS? Content is definitely over pictures, i rather read then make a collage of my favorite skiers :P

Thanks guys :D

sbc skier is worth checking out. it focuses pretty heavily on canadian athletes and mountains but i find its articles less repetitive than some magazines.you can check out their website here:http://www.sbcskier.com/homeit has some of their older features and athlete profiles

The Ski Journal blows away every print ski mag out. The articles are well written and the photos are amazing. It's worth every penny.

Good call, I saw it in a bookstore the other day and it looked pretty dope.
Skiing Magazine is a good one too.

Ski is aimed at gapers, Freeskier is aimed at park skiers, and skiing is aimed at backcountry mountain bros. Get Freeskier and Skiing

Skiing Magazine is ridiculous. They rate ski resorts based on the "resort" part. WTF cares if a resort has an awesome hotel, heated pool, etc...

Are you kidding me? Did you even read the 2008-09 Resort Guide? It was hilarious -- the topics/categories they chose definitely had nothing to do with the "resort" aspect of it at all. It had some of the requisites like "best powder," "best resort," "best place to ditch the crowds," etc., but it also had some new categories. "Scariest surface lift?" (The Roca Jack, Portillo, Chile.) "Best place to buy a guilt present?" (Aspen, CO.) "Best BC Access?" (Jackson Hole, WY.) "Best legal car camping?" (Taos, NM.) "Scariest Access Road?" (Valle Nevado, Chile.) Hell, there's even "best meat market" -- hint: not "actual meat market," that goes to Europe -- (Harry O's, Park City, UT). I used to think Skiing Magazine was gaper-esque. No longer. The new editor and owners have really done a great job of revitalizing the mag.

Perhaps you're thinking of SKI Magazine?

OP: I subscribe to Freeskier, Powder and Skiing. They are all great. My favorite is definitely Powder, though.

It has been a couple of years since I read skiing magazine. The new editor must have came after I stopped getting it. I guess I'll have to check it out now.

asian_allen has spoken, freeskier is off the list :P jks

Well i cant afford skiing journal, 50 bucks for 4 issues is too much, even though theyre big ones.

Im going to find a freeskier, skiing and sbc skier to read from before i subscribe to anything.

Thanks alot for the info!

btw, the Powder mag i got kinda sucked after reading it through and through. Volume 37 if anyone has read it.

the ski journal is dope, i just started subscribing to it about a year ago...way cooler than alot of the other mags out there and is super well done. Its focus is actually on the love of the sport, and not on shity ads.p.s. there's prob a reason why the other mags are so cheap

word skiing is a great mag with tons of humour in it. theres nothing they love more than finding some sweet pow and hooking up in gondolas

SKi is meant for a weekend warrior that wants to look like they love skiing more than they do

skiing is definite good choice

and FREESKIER is of course the choice for anyone looking for jumps and rails and all that

Skiing Magazine is the best- It goes into detail about some ski areas, gnarly zones, and how to do cool tricks/crazy things. My favorite magazine.

Powder is sick too.

If you think Powder 'sucks', you maybe disappointed with freeskier, skiing and SBC. I highly recommend paying the extra money and getting a subscription to The Ski Journal. Nice things cost more.

What a loaded comment. There are loads of good ski photogs. Too bad the people in charge of the magazines only pick people shooting for specific sponsor dollars. There was a reason that the epics in last years issues of Freeskier BLEW NUTS for the most part. They only picked pictures that represent the sponsors that pay their bills.

There are of course some exceptions, the cover shot on the FS photo annual was incredibly baller. And the articles.... well they're written at the level the mag is aiming for. That's for sure.

Don't blame the photographers. Blame the magazines. I understand ad space and making money, it's got to be profitable to exist right? I just can't understand why the editorial content they CHOOSE can't be a little more diverse than what the sponsors are paying to put in the mag already.

It's politics. That's all it is. There needs to be a better print media for our sport, they all suck in my opinion. Based on last years magazines and their content, SKIING really stepped it up in my opinion and is the only one I'll be reading this year.
