Ski instructors getting tIps (money) at the end of a lesson from students?

So I was teaching a class on the weekend and at the end of it i had a student come up to me and hand me a 5 dollar bill. He said his mom told him to give it to me. I was pretty surprised because I've never gotten one before. Then a handful of the other students parents noticed this and they all gave me tips as well. So It brought up a thought. Should ski instructors be tipped more often? Or is it just greedy and not something that would be normal? After all, we do get some low wages in the industry and a tip at the end of the lesson is always great to cheer you up as well as a courteous thing to do.

Thoughts?

It really depends on who your client is and where you work. If you're teaching a private lesson at whistler, chances are you will be tipped nicely. However, if its a group kids lesson at your local hill you might get tipped but its certainly not frequently.

Your poll sucks and only gives two outer extremes as options. I'd say that tipping should be by no means standard, but if you were really happy with your experience and your instructure did a great job then you shouldn't hesitate to tip. As it should be with most industries where tipping is the norm

Getting tipped shouldn't be expected…because then you will get disappointed. But it's a nice perk of the job every once in a while!

With group lessons if you go out of your way to focus on individuals you should be tipped, as well as with a private, your not making shit as is, and people should know that and pay you for it.

I like the OP's story as it is an example of genuine tipping that I'm sure is well deserved.

Though I know plenty of instructors that rely on tips to make the majority of their pay. At least this is how it goes down at major resorts. Yes they get snobby about it and expect tips.

Back when I was a ski instructor for kids, I used to keep a 20 in my pocket and at the end of the day when the parents came to pick up the kids we gave them a "report card" thing and I always kept the cards in the same pocket as the 20, pull out the cards and the 20 parents see the money and almost always tipped after seeing that 20. I just babysat your kid all day for minimum wage greedy or not I would like a tip.

As an instructor at the number 1 rated family resort (Smugglers Notch Resort), tips are part of the job. The biggest ones can range into the hundreds, and they aren't always money. Once one of my friends received a FREE pair of Worth skis...pretty rad stuff.

Instructors definitely deserve more money than they get paid. Especially with the insane prices at most resorts. More of the money earned should be given to the instructors that encourage more kids to ski.

I started instructing for 5.25 an hour. Those were the days. Get rich or die trying.

Making it rain pennies on you peasants.

This is true. I had one lesson give me a fridge full of food. I was stoked.

I've done the same thing. Good tip

You tip the people who bring you your food at a restuarant...why would you not tip someone who was responsible for the safety, fun and well being of your screaming child all day (and for not a lot more than minimum wage)
