Hey everyone! Relatable thread?? lol. I have been skiing since i was 15, 34 years ago. I am 54!! I ski every year with my wife and son and used to with my friends. We used to eat opioids and ski in appalcahia but I never got better? Skiing is my favorite thing to do and has been for a while now but I still cant even 180. I'm so scared to. When i go in the ramp park all the good kids will laugh at me when I fall trying a 180 and it ruins my confidence... I have tried to learn 180 on normal ground but since my weight is big I cant seem to turn around fast enough. I need a big ramp to learn but am scared of all the bullies in the ramp area. PLZ HELP OR RELATE?? thanks

First of all, find a small jump or even build one. I truly don’t think that your height or size has an affect on why you can’t spin on the flat, but that if that is the case or just in general learning on a small jump is a big confidence booster. It should also give you more air to spin with a way less consequence landing. Seconed, I wouldn’t listen to people that laugh at you... it’s not like their 50 and trying new tricks!

Think of it less of a rotation and more of a movement. Just set and jump looking to the direction you’re spinning.

You got it man make sure to pop hard and use your hips to spin, very stoked to see someone older than my dad giving freestyle skiing a shot, you got that shit forsure!

Hmm 15, 34... that would be 49. Math is off a bit here. Anyway, try 180 slide around on the flat. Half way around, then try the rest of the way around. When comfortable with that, try 360 on the flat. After that, try off a small jump. Easier than you think.

Can you ski backwards? Its easier to commit to landing backwards if you are confident skiing switch

I took a break from skiing and at age 34 couldn’t 180, trained and skied a ton and built my truck list outside of the park where I was comfortable, now at 37 I can 540 again etc but couldn’t imagine doing a rodeo or backie again and every season I’m more apprehensive, the only thing I don’t fear are big straight drops and I’m younger than you so feel good your still out there shreddin, I hope I am in 20 years

True, but I am scared to hit a jump anymore let alone do a trick on one!

Big reason I’m not a park guy, snow seems harder in there ?, and my ass , nose, eye, and ribs can attest to that

Build / find a little jump outside of the park or go when its not crowded.

As another older skier I also get freaked out trying stuff when there's too many people around. Like today. Some kids set up a rail made of logs on the side of a regular run. I hiked that thing for an hour. It brought up my confidence. Other people were hitting it also but much less than in the actual park. Last season I hit my first rail on a shitty rainy day when there was a total of 3 people in the beginner park. Just gotta take those opportunities and go for it. Another vote for getting comfortable - really comfortable with switch .

Edited to add - what skis are you using?

We are the same age! :p I feel backies into pow are OK though. I have 30+ years of skiiing non stop though, so there is some skill somewhere.

Heck I used to do backies on telemark skis in leather boots! (not a 100% landing ratio with that setup) before I switched back to alpine, but after 2 broken backs , and misc bones and my 7th set of fake teeth, Im more careful, or.. yeah so I think. Currently cant lift right shoulder too much after wipeing out 13 days ago on a rail, but my hip from crashing a rail 15 days ago is becoming better! key is to have auchies on both sides.... Ohh and my broken wrist is at least back to working 90% again from march to now.

When you age, shit hurts more, and takes forever to heal. The only thing I can do of parkstuff theese days to impress the younger crowd is pure speed off of features, Im fatter/taller than them, and have better bases/wax. Ohh and drinking at apres ski.

Backies in leather boots, yikes that’s some guts.

Yes at this age I don’t heal like I used to , last year I broke my hand, hurt my hip , my ribs and put my back into a tree, carried those injuries thru the spring and some into this season. Year before I caught an edge skiing switch watching my son and wanted my head on hard pack, also ate shit leaned easy too far forward for too long lost my whereabouts on a truck driver 3, my whole face was black and blue for weeks, overspent a usual 15 foot drop to slope to 30 and flat from an overshoot, landed that shit but my groin and hamstring are permanently tight and injure what I consider easily.

Hope ya make it through this season m8 , no pain no gain

hey my man i was in sonthing kinda similar I'm a snowboarder of 15 years and a skiier of 2 I got into skiing because the freestyle looked more fun to me but its really all about just going for it! ita one thing to not be able to do a 180 of you spend all the time in the park but if you never really tried getting you skis sideways I never did any mind of spins on my board but now I'm throwing all kinds of stuff on my skis because at one point you just gotta go for it

(ps beer or a flask helps with confidence)

Practice by trying 180 on flat ground, skis off. Then try 180 on flat ground skis on. Learn the process of using your shoulders, hips and head to initiate/direct your rotation. Once you’ve got the hang of it, bring it to snow! I also recommend familiarizing yourself with skiing backwards if you haven’t already, cuz like, what are you gonna do when you land ya know? As for confidence, you’ve gotta start somewhere. being made fun of does suck, and is a totally valid thing to think about. To prevent that, Don’t go to the biggest jump line you can find and just got for it. That’s a good way to hurt yourself and bruise the ego as well. Anybody in the small park that gives you a hard time for trying to learn something new in the right environment can go kick rocks. I hope this helps. Now get out there and jump off somethin for crying out loud. Last thing, Stretching prevents injury. It’s worth thinking about taking a couple of minutes to limber up, regardless of your age stretching before park skiing is something everyone should do, but most park rats are too stoned to remember!! Stupid kids!!!

If you started at 15 and you’ve been skiing for 34 years, you can’t be 54 now.

To correctly calculate your age, cut yourself in half and count the rings.

Brilliant! This means I am 19 years old! Ah.........to be young again!

If you make these you will get my money

If I can get enough people to where it would be worth it to bulk order I def would make this a reality. Hit me up if you want sticks
