Ski Etiquette and Courtesy

There's a lot of pretty basic ski etiquette that we all observe; don't snake people, don't use lips as jumps, don't cut the lift line, etc. But there's still a lot of things that happen on the mountain that piss me off. Mainly, I hate when upper mountain lifts aren't running (wind, weather, whatever) and people decide to traverse as high as they can across the faces just to get ~10 turns. Then the top opens and there's massive fucking traverse cuts through the runs. The wind holds in Mammoth makes this especially egregious and sometimes there's 2ft wide traverses across the hill. Like, just fucking wait and hour and actually enjoy the top of the mountain when it opens. Nobody thinks your 10 mom carves are cool.

What are some other unofficial rules that skiers should follow?

I'd appreciate it if the 40+yo blowhard on soul 7s didn't swear a ton whilst talking much louder than necessary in lift lines. I have kids and nobody cares "how fuuucking gnarly that line was bro"

Also please don't litter. Anywhere. Ever. It should be punishable by public flogging in my opinion.

getting real close to the person in front of you when they're being filmed and one upping their trick

Ooo, traverse cuts piss me off. Especially if 90% of the tracks are just traversing to get over to one side that isn't any better, just father away.

Traverses are fine but sometimes people can't stick to a few of them. When the whole hill is trenched out it rides like shit imo.

people stepping on my tails in liftlines drives me insane, and usually leads to a solid tail slap back on their noses so they get the point.

on the other hand, i step all over the tails of people not understanding what "merging" means in the lift line, or race teams that understand the concept perfectly well, but think they don't have to abide by it (exception: actual event days).

call it a double standard, whatever, if you don't understand what i mean i'll probably be stepping on your skis soon ;)

Littering is a big one, people who stop in the middle of the run or in the park(stop off to the side), boarders all hoarded around the unload area of the lift strapping in(go over to the benches or a little farther out of the way) Down hill skier has the right away, not many abide by this one.

I'd like to take this opportunity to confess. Please forgive me NS.

So at Alpental and Crystal, if someone is a single in a long line, they will hold up their pole to indicate they have space for someone to join. When you see someone holding up a pole, you cut ahead to join them.

Cue me going to Whistler for the first time. There's a massive line for one of the main chairs and there are A LOT of people holding up poles. My dumbass thinks "Golly gee! Look at all these free spaces!" So I find the furthest pole in the line and cut the giant crowd to join them. I get to the person and ask "single?" to confirm that they do need someone else on the chair. Turns out that person didn't speak english. That's fine, why else would they be holding their pole up? Plus there is a free spot in their group.

NS, at this point I was about 3 or 4 groups back from getting on the chair. That's when I realized how fucking dumb I was. Everyone holding up a pole was a tourist. They were trying to get those fluffo fuck birds to land on their poles... Still got on the chair with them and went to the back of the line next time.

I rode a few times with one guy this year, on our shitty 190' local hill. If the people in front of us didn't have exactly 4 people in their line, and nobody was joining them, he'd loose his shit. Screaming, and cursing at the people in front. Like jesus christ chill man, you don't have to roast the asian dude that's just trying to get his kids on the chair in front of his whole family. So what if you are 15s later to the top? Riding with him was fucking embarrassing. I ditched him after he started trying to pick fights with the other locals. Has anyone else seen dudes like this?

If you use the singles line as a group when the lift line is long:

1. FUCK YOU for slowing down the singles line

2. You are a fucking moron because the group line moves just as fast when it’s not clogged with you stupid assholes

Beer cans under the lift.... next person I see doing it is gonna end up with an ass for a head. Also when it’s kinda busy and people don’t fill up chairs so they can sit by themselves on a quad.

Don't snake park crew. I did this by accident and I felt super bad. I was hiking a feature and I was about to hit it when a park crew guy came to rake it. I asked him if I could hit it first and I thought he said yeah this ones open but ig he said that ones open, referring to the rail next to him(I had music playing) so I went around him and hit the rail and he shouted at me and I felt really bad

I rarely get pissed on the mountai, but my big one is people blocking my passes especially on a traverse. I ski faster than most, so I usually will pass people by going around them on the traverse. I have noticed some people try to block me passing them. I hate this and if you're doing this I will push you over. I always say: coming up on your left left left left or right right right right and then you purposefully move to block me. Most notably I took out a few snowboarders who did this on road to Provo rope drops on powder days. I always made sure to pass under them so they can hold their line and they still tried to drop down on me to prevent me from passing. So I just held my edge and pushed back, two points of contact are easier to balance on than one.

People who use the singles line but don't merge with open chairs several times. Like yo motherfuckers, there's a line behind you, and until you move, it's going nowhere. But chairs of 3's or even 2's will go by(on a quad) and nothing. They just stand there like derpppp.

If people don't want you riding with them, fuck em. When it's busy full chairs. If it's mellow then whatever but when it's busy you should always expect to get randos shoved on your chair if you don't have the full amount of peeps.

That's a dick move. I've never really had a problem on traverses but did get stuck behind a super slow patroller at breck the other week. Sucked cause my buddy and I were on boards that coulda used some wax. Dude killed are speed.

But really only run into shit on hikes in winter and summer. People that won't move over but hike slow as fuck. Sometimes get made that people are right on their ass or talking shit. If it's some weird pride thing, them peoples can fuck off. Idk I don't really get passed hiking often but I don't mind it. In a car I let people cruise by all the time. If people want to go faster, let them. No reason to hold up the flow cause you're salty somebody hikes faster.

Littering should get a pass suspension for the week or the season.

I've been skiing behind a guy who dropped a plastic waterbottle. Picked it up, skied next to him, I told him "I think you dropped this, go recycle it" and the look on his face was fucking Hilarious.

Other story from that day a guy dropped his phone, I contacted his friend through it and in the case there was rolling papers and he seemed happier that I found his papers than his phone

I have a big fuckin' mouth. That being said, if someone does some dummy shit in the lift line, I'll say something.

The absolute worst is when I get told to chill out by people who don't mind when other people cut, don'talternate, or use the singles lime for their whole crew. Nah, fuck that. The reason people do that shit is they don't expect someone to do or say anything about it. Their time on the mountain is no more important than anyone elses. Ever.

Corck etiquette should be established. It pisses me off watching people get away with looking at their toes and calling corcks. Its like saying a straight air is a backflip. Like whats the fucking point learning corcks properly when you could just spin a seven and call it a dub. Everyday there are millions of questionable corcks done when are we as a community going to stop this retarded action and bring back proper tricks.

If you want to listen to music, bring headphones not a speaker. Even if the I like the song you’re playing, it still sounds like shit.

Don't snake the entire trail when it's obvious people are tying to pass you. You're going slow as fuck.

People need to learn how to properly fill the lift chairs. It aggravates me when lifties who are directing lines totally ignore people who split their groups up. Like dude more than one person can ride a quad. Your snowboard buddies should maybe learn to get off a lift than needing more space.

Also if you have a partial group, you better let that single in.

Alternate lift lines and take turns. Left, right, left, right. Seen too many examples where one line completely empties because the guy in my line is too nice and let's them all go first.

Idc how stupid someone may be in front of you, the downhill person always has right of way. Anticipate they will do something dumb. Don't be screaming past children inches from disaster. Give space and expect an unexpected turn.

Haha that’s a good one, surprised you didn’t get heckled hard... I suppose tourists don’t usually have the balls to do that.

it’s always the kids that can barely do park jumps or slide boxes/rails doing it too.

I hate this!!! I retaliated by twisting pretending to stretch my back and jamming my poles into tips hard as fuck , no one on the slopes knows I’m not a civilian and if someone gets upset with me they won’t be walking or skiing anymore

If I ever see your east coast hating ass I’m following you around with the loudest speaker playing the dumbest fucking song until I shove you into a tree dick

People that traverse the slope , I hate this

Snowboarders , for fuck sake carve a line wuitscraping all the powder away and pull your pants up

Resorts that close at 430 fuck them I didn’t come to spend money at your resteraunts

+1 for people ramming their tips into my tails in line. One way ticket to me being a dick to you. Especially if you have rentals. Fuck you.

One thing that will always piss me off is ski instructors that take their kids into places they shouldn’t and then have them traverse coast to coast. I don’t normally have problems with everyday skiers / jerry’s cutting my line off but if there’s a ski instructor with a class, 9/10 times he’ll cut my line and tell me to “slow down” ?

I hate that some runs end up being a "right of passage" or something like that. OOOO we didn't a bunch of blacks, oooooo we wedged down the steepest trail on the mountain.

Sometimes when you're just trying to rip some groomers, and pick the most out of the way/steepest terrain to get away from slow fucks, there are still dads with little kids, or lessons. I had a dad flip out on me in lift line because I "almost hit his kid" I saw his slow ass piece of shit kid, Wasn't even close, but I sure as fuck wasn't slowing down to 0mph because that's all his kids could ski. Sometimes the whole mountain is a slow zone, traffic clusterfuck or both. If you go down the steepest terrain that's open, way above your ability level, you can't bitch when people are trying to actually cruise.

It's like wedging through an XL park and complaining that people riding the features are going to fast or almost hit you.(Which also happens)

Park stuff. Don't side jump the rail takeoffs. Don't run over park crew when they're raking. Don't wedge around the pipe or sideslip the vert of the big pipe because you suck when there's a mini pipe right next to it fucking built for you.

Idk, but sometimes you just wanna ski groomers fast as fuck. Not tucking, tucking doesn't really get me hard. Making some fast turns and cruising. Frig off or go to another trail families!

I was coaching at nationals this year and there were these parents watching slopestyle from in the park instead of the designated viewing area and these fucks literally called ski patrol on a group of snowboarders that were ripping through the park. I guess one of them got sprayed and that ruined their day. Fuck people in parks that dont belong in parks.

Yes the mountains for everybody , that said there’s a place for you!!!!! A place where you won’t ruin my FUCKING line! I’m a dad and fuck my kids stay where they belong

Mofos don’t learn til a kid gets crippd and dad gets beat up

Fuck snowboarders sitting on the side of the landing

And fuck the cheaper rooms selling out when I book last minute sometimes , dicks

Fuck ski school skipping the line that’s bs!

Yeah I’ve noticed people can especially be blowhards about this stuff. If it’s crowded I know it’s important to consolidate the line and keep it moving but a few underfilled or single chairs are not a big deal. I’ve even gotten snide remarks from lifties when I wait for an empty chair if there’s no line, shit’s just stupid.

Dude Ski School is practically the slutty girl in college and the ski resort is the desperate virgin freshman . The resort will always cater to the ski school fucks and they will always take advantage of that.

There’s also no reason people should have to pay $600/day for a ski lesson for their kid when there’s 8 other kids in that group.

not every ski instructor sucks but 95% of them are just washed up jackasses who thought they were gonna be someone.

this one is especially important in the backcountry

I don’t know how much more clear I would have to make myself but people Please educate yourself on avalanche safety, enter the BC with the right equipment, and always be aware that there are plenty of other people nowadays that have the same idea as you do (some of them are complete BC Noobs). This causes for congestion and potentially dangerous situations.

Etiquette and courtesy is really common sense. Common Sense can be the difference between Life and Death in the BC. You’d be surprised the amount of people I’ve came across in the BC and sidecountry who don’t have beacons, who Can’t ski good at all, and who are completely unaware of how stupid they really look and sound.

That brings up another point don’t retaliate at someone who is trying to help you. You are not as good as you think you are, nobody is and there is always something new to learn. So don’t be a dick if someone tells you that you can use some improvement

That sounds pretty condescending to me.

Maybe you are not being nice when you try to help? IDK, but I know it's nice to be nice.

After all seem anyone can go to a lot of BC places without some degree, license or permit etc.

Maybe stay away from them and let nature take it's course. Survival of the fittest.

Hate me too if you want, but the attitude represented in your statements is repulsive. I hope you're just a keyboard worrier or drunk or something; not like this in real life, especially while on hill.

Yea, people that get way too close passing at mach 5.0

People that bring little kids into a terrain park that should not be there.

People that get on the lift with me, then won't talk and are dick heads. I ask myself, why did you get on the lift with me?

That's about it.

Parents/ski instructors bringing little kids into the park to learn the basics of skiing. Like go to the bunny hill it’s not fun trying to get laps when you got a 5 year old and their jerry dad snow plowing down the park at 3 mph and then of course they have to practice using the tow rope and they end up falling and stopping it

Honestly this is my biggest beef. The hill I was riding at this year has one of the better park setups in the area. They used to have a park pass ($10, write some bs quiz and you are all set for the season) that you needed. This year they decided to eliminate that, and jack up ticket prices by $10. It is one of the closest hills to the western GTA, and caters to 95% kooks, so all of a sudden the park is filled with 3 year olds on leashes, and retarded people. Having a park pass is a PITA. Getting snaked 24/7 is much worse.

What gets me is when skiing a powder stash , getting a nice flow going and theres a 5 foot wide groomed area from a snowboarder side slipping the rest of the run.
