Ski companies and mental health

A little backstory first: I lost my little brother to suicide in February of 2019. Since then, I've advocated for teen suicide prevention and destigmatizing mental illness. Part of that work included founding a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, called Jackstrong17 in honor of my brother, Jack. I raised over $46,000 and have been using that money to help craft legislation, stage school walk-outs, host events, and provide scholarships. Recently, we passed "Jack and Cait's Law," in the Colorado legislature which basically provides a legal foundation for how we can better manage bullying incidents and requires therapy for all parties involved.

I have worked on countless campaigns nationwide, including helping film, direct, and storytell for some viral public service announcements which were played at movie theatres and appear in ads all over the US. I also interviewed a group of teenagers in the viral movie, Childhood 2.0 (Which can be found for free here:
) Additionally, I sit on the National Mental Health Advisory Board and recently received a $5,000 grant from a large, national organization in order to perform an access to mental health care study in Montana. I am in my final semester of studying Neuroscience at Bridger Bowl University --errr-- Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. I also recently received University endorsement for the Rhodes Scholarship to study Clinical and Therapeutic Neuroscience at Oxford University in the UK.

My point being, essentially, that I am incredibly passionate about mental health and preventing teen suicide; and, I intend to devote the remainder of my days to tackling the latter.

Okay, so now you're probably wondering, bro why are you saying all this on NS? As many of you likely know, mountain west states like Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and Nevada (and Alaska) lead the country in suicide rates per capita. And if you hone in further on ski communities, you will unfortunately discover that these communities are affected by suicide rates that are nearly triple the national average.

This summer I found myself wondering: how is this the case and what can I do to bring attention to a crisis that is disproportionately affecting members of my beloved ski community?

I landed on the idea of creating a unique ski film, and pitched this idea to a couple friends who operate a production company in town here in Bozeman. The idea is basically to create a film with a bunch of testimonials from big name skiers, resort employees, park skiers, comp skiers, big mountain skiers, backcountry skiers, and street skiers to form a collage of mental health experiences. Their stories, told in their own words, will be intertwined into ski footage we plan to film all around the West in a creative form.

My hope is that just by hearing and seeing that mental illness affects almost everyone in one way or another, that we can begin the arduous task of destigmatizing mental illness and seeking treatment in the ski industry. Or at the bare minimum, I hope to at least inspire some of us to have a conversation about mental health that we otherwise wouldn't have had.

So now you're probably really thinking, okay dude cool, but again why are you saying this here? I'll get straight to it: we need support from the industry to make the project happen at all and to push the final product out as far and wide as possible.

But first, I need your help, NS!

Are any of you aware of any ski industry companies who actively support destigmatizing mental health or have in the past? If so, who? If not, which companies should I reach out to first for support? And if you are an owner or work in industry, are you interested in supporting this project? All donations, gear or otherwise, will be completely tax-deductible through my non-profit. I have only reached out to Phunkshun Wear so far, as they previously produced some facemasks for my non-profit (with [tag=226667]@Liam_j10[/tag] 's artwork). The friendly folk at Phunkshun expressed great interest right away and wanted to know how they could help.

More than anything I just want as many people in our community as possible to see that they aren't alone in their struggles and that seeking treatment is totally normal (and awesome, in my opinion).

If any of you are interested in providing a short video testimonial in a couple months regarding your mental health experiences, please shoot me a PM!

Thank you for reading this essay of a post and thank you in advance for any suggestions and for all the giggles this week in the forums:)

Cheers,

John 1013347.png

This is so sick man. There’s a thread in NSG about medication so I won’t go in to too much detail but I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety 4 years ago. I’d love to take part in this, it sounds like a really unique project and one that will resound with a lot of people. I’ll send you a PM!

This is sick. I'm not anything more than a forum dweller in the Midwest with limited financial resources but I'd love to help you out if you have any ideas. If you are fundraising I'll throw a bit your way for sure.

That is a great idea, I hadn't thought about fundraising with the public! I am going to get on making a GoFundMe tomorrow morning after MCAT prep?

There actually have been a lot of discussions in the forums about mental health, articles, etc.

I think the biggest problem is still our heath care system. Even people who have health insurance can struggle to find mental health resources. The only way it works is if it's widely available and easy to access. It's going to be s thing eventually but we're really stuck as a country on this one.

I like the idea of a project about mental health and skiing. I've enjoyed learning about peoples coming out, mental health ussues, addiction battles. It's cool to see that pros are people to and some issues are universal regardless if you're in some big contests and movies.

Good luck on the project!

thank you! and totally agree, our health care system has totally failed to effectively diagnose, treat, and manage mental illness for the vast majority of people. I spend a fair amount of time everyday connecting people in crisis to mental health professionals and it's always hurdle after hurdle when it comes to accessing care.

Good on you to do this and god speed! Having gone through depression myself for many years and then raising kids in this age of technology has certainly been challenging. More than happy to help in anyway I can from donating to passing the word.

I went to Chamonix and filmed a documentary in 2017 with a bunch of special ops veterans about how powerful the effect of outdoor activity can be for people recovering from trauma. It might be different trauma than most teens are experiencing but the suicide rate amongst veterans is also an outlier.

Get your buds out for a ski, hike, pedal, skate or whatever!

If your current successes are any indication of what you’re going to achieve throughout your life, I think a lot of people will be better off. You might be tempted to work from the top down but don’t forget that the ground-up, personal connections that people feel really touch them and can be hugely impactful.

I’ve personally struggled a lot with mental health and I really hope you pull this off, I think it would be great for the community. You’ve honored your brother in such an amazing way through those accomplishments, I’m sure he would be proud.

Hell yeah dude, this looks awesome. I’m happy whip up some more artwork or designs if you’re in need of any.

First of all thank you so much for having the courage to bringing up this topic, I have lost 2 close family members to suicide I’ve attempted it too . I struggle with mental health on a daily basis anxiety/ depression / ptsd . I know I’m not alone in the ski community feeling this way and I want this topic to be more accepted . I will help in any way I can because I truely care about this ill send you a message . Things need to move forward and to anyone on here feeling on feeling rock bottom I’m around and my ears are open if you need to ❤️

Could be a niche connection, but I don't know if theres anything worth exploring around brain damage and mental health is skiing, both pro and amatures. On my brain since I just picked up concussion #6 this morning, and know that without the mental coping strategies that I learned getting out of a pretty dark place, they would have the capacity to absolutely destroy me. Seeing stuff like this and knowing that so many more people are working on making the world a better place to work through struggles is pretty incredible, and helps put in context that I don't have to fix everything, but when i have an opportunity to do so, or to help someone else, there are people and systems to support that. cheers, and thank you

This is so important!! I’d love to be apart of this in any way possible! My brother passed away from an overdose. My mother dealt with mental health issues when I was growing up and I’ve had my fair share of struggles with depression, anxiety snd self harm. I would like to think I made it to the other side and I’m now a registered nurse and am hoping to get certified in mental health/psychiatric nursing!

It definitely takes a village! And I am sure there is at least some connection between TBIs and mental illness. Unfortunately, that has not been researched super effectively yet. The trouble with a majority of these studies is that it is nearly impossible to design a model to demonstrate causality, rather than just correlation. Here are a couple links to some primary research articles that do their best to demonstrate a correlation between certain mental disorders following mild TBI (concussions) that should be free to access:

I know words like "I'm sorry" simply do not do justice to mend the pain of losing of a loved one, especially a sibling; so, I empathize with you. It's amazing to see that you have turned your tragedy into motivation, progress, and dedication to an underserved field. The mental health community would be lucky to have you! I would love to interview you either in person this winter or via FaceTime/Zoom/Webex and give you a chance to make your voice heard in this project. Shoot me a PM and we will be in touch:)

Wait did you win a Rhodes scholarship? If so that’s huuuuuuge!!!

I received official endorsement and nomination from my University (Montana State). Which basically means that the President of MSU is solely backing my application, after they selected me from an 8 month internal review process earlier this month. I will find out on Halloween (extra spooky this year now) if I was selected by Rhodes to be a Finalist and then have an interview in November. Keep your skis crossed for me!

Shoot me a PM if you wanna chat further. From experience and talking with experts I think concussions/repeated minor brain impact is much more prevalent in our community than most and it has a massive impact on mental health stuff. Love the project idea

This is awesome. It would be great to have some talk about TBI and mental health. I think that as skiers we are way more susceptible to both major concussions and repeated concussions. I will PM you I have had a long mental health journey as a result of a TBI I suffered while mountain biking.

[tag=235364]@GeorgeWBush[/tag] epic to see people in our community stepping up for something they are passionate about and putting in the time in to educate others around them. Shoot me an email and lets chat - sam@4frnt.com. ??

[tag=235364]@GeorgeWBush[/tag] I have countless friends and family that struggle and deal with this on a daily basis. I really appreciate your initiative on this. As you mentioned, my company [tag=182160]@PhunkshunWear[/tag] wants to support, but if there is anything I can personally do to help, let me know.

That's a great and rather nuanced point! Repeated brain slams undoubtedly occur more in skiing than in many other sports. Just shot you a message!

Great idea that finally someone wants to showcase the B side of being and living in the ski industry and the mental health problems it can cause since ski movies always highlight the goods about it.

I highly recommend interviewing people who live in ski towns and discuss the so called "PARADISE PARADOX"

Some great articles about it:
