Ski Car for under 10k?

So I'm in the market for a new car, I have 10k to spend (preferably closer to 8). It needs to be awd and reliable with less than 100k miles on it, and I'd like for it to get good gas mileage. Any ideas?

It's not as "cool" as a subaru, but it fits all of your criteria. Plus you have a little bit of extra room.

Jeep, Subi, Audi/4motion VWs, Tacos, CRVs, Mini vans, conversion vans, the list goes on and on. 4x4 or awd is avail on all them.

maybe look at getting a mid 90's forrunner. Those things will kill it for you, and their pretty cheap. Even if you cant find one with less than 100,000 miles, it probably wont matter because those cars are so reliable.

Not a volo if you care about reliability. While European cars are typically more fun to drive, Japanese cars are more reliable .

got my 2003 honda accord Lx for 4000 with 170k on it.

1 year and 5 months later i have 215k. ive had 1 gasket go on me and the repair came out to 35 dollars. do your oil every 5k and youll have no problems. such a reliable car. parts are cheap and with a full rack of skis on your roof you still get 25 mpg highway. cant really beat that

toyota tacoma or fourrunner

more reliable than anything, and they look good

better groundclearance than a silly lesbaru

Subaru. You will find a lot of Outbacks for under that price with good mileage. If you dont like Subaru's, then pretty much look and shop around.

Dude get a Jeep. You can easily get 200,000-300,000 miles out of one. Yeah it sucks on gas but its totally doable. Will never get stuck in the snow, and you can tow all the hot girls that get stuck. Best car you will ever own.

I love my Mazda 3, cheap, lots of room and quite reliable. It doesnt have 4 wheel drive so if your a good driver, you should be ok

+1 for Jeep. Either a Cherokee or Wrangler (If you can find one for cheap that's not too beat). Awesome thing about older wranglers is that parts are super cheap and you can do almost any repairs yourself if you know your way around a tool box.

haha my dad might be selling one pretty soon. AC is broken (common problem in 02-06 crvs) but everything else is all good. I would probably be 5-8g so I'm sure you could find one near you for the same kind of deal

1998 Buick lesabre limited. Bombproof 3.8 litre v6 powerful and decent mileage. And it's a boat. Not awd but still a good car otherwise

OP, something to consider. There are a lot of great cars that have been suggested, but when you get a car past 100k miles, you'll have to be doing frequent repairs. Not necessarily huge fixes, but it becomes a more frequent thing. The types of cars here are listed in order of cheapest to repair to most expensive. Keep this in mind since you've got a limited budget to work with.

-Economy domestics (i.e. Ford Taurus)

-Utility domestics (i.e. Jeep Cherokee)

-Economy imports (i.e. Honda Accord)

-Utility imports (i.e. Nissan Pathfinder, Volvo AWD)

-Luxury domestics (i.e. Lincolns, Cadillacs)

-Luxury imports (i.e. Infinity, Acura)

-Exotics and above(you won't be getting into these)

Spend no more than 8k and save the other 2k for if something breaks. You'll be very glad you have it.

This is what I'm driving -- 265 000 kilometers and still going strong.

And the best part? I only paid $1000 for it!

>lives in washington state

>'needs' awd

nope. wsdot does too good of a job to need it. save the money/maintenance and buy a honda w/ good studless snows

Definitely got lucky! A friend of mine is a mechanic and has been tending to the car for the last ten years... the owner finally decided to sell it and was going to trade it in for $1000 -- but instead ended up selling it to me.

Definitely got lucky!

I think obvious answer would be a Subaru, but my roommate has one and gets awful mileage (22-23MPG) in his legacy. And you don't always need 4WD, at all. I've had a FWD Acura since I moved to Colorado and have been fine for the most part. Get snow tires, change them out. Better than spending alll that on gas, and 4WD takes away brake horsepower too so it's slower.

If you want high profile like if you want to go offroading to go climb mountains and stuff, get an Xterra or a jeep but be ready for shit mileage (like, 15)

the thing legacy and outback wagons have going for them over imprezas and foreters is sleeping length in the back

I was contemplating keep my 01 Toyota Camry, and putting some snow tires on it, or selling it an getting a used jeep. The toyota has been sooooo reliable, put new motor(used) in it 3 years ago when I hit 270k miles. Since I am moving to Colorado in Novemeber, I am worried that even with the snow tires, It will be hard to climb the mountains. No interest in driving offroad.....

if it's under 100k mileage, chances are the CV axles, head gasket, and timing belt are all original and will need to be replaced in less than 40k miles...assuming they don't blow up on OP beforehand in which case no worries RIP OP

camry's are great but have very little power or weight to survive on roads like those out in CO :\

not sure if it's in your budget, but newer model (2005+) subarus get better gas mileage.

also, if you don't live in a mountain town, for the most part you won't need awd/4wd. something to consider with gas being so expensive lately.

my dream car would be an awd diesel volkswagen. spoiled little girl i work with has one and gets 40-50mpg.

HOnestly, if you want a car and you don't care if it's not a hatchback, get an AWD Buick.. i have a 2006 buick lacrosse with 327,000 miles on it.. runs like a goddamn train.
