Ski Bumming

So I'm moving on to college and of course with that comes talks with the parents of what I want to be, what I want to study and of course the question of what I'm going to do after college. After college, I told them, I plan on going ski bumming for a while. I expected to hear the laugh followed by either they think I'm joking or that I'm going to get a job. Well that wasn't the case suprisingly. As it turns out they are all for it! Get a job at a ski resort for the free tickets, and a job at a resturant for free food and I'm set. The rest of the money just go towards my cheap-ass residence, gas money and equipement. My dad says that he regrets he never got the chance to do something like that when he could and my mom... well... she just goes with the flow. This is sweet! How many people can say that their parents will support their kids in the choice of just bumming around not really mounting to anything and just having fun? I'm one lucky child.

bro, that was my dream I really envy you ... but now I study and here on CHile I go all winter skiing and on summer Ill go to the states same as you... But I will have some eprdios of dtudying to..... anyway I envy u brother gL on it

Just finished college and that's what i'm doing until i get over it, if that could ever happen.

the day will come when you wont have to ask your parents for shit! it'll get better and better after that.. til then, enjoy the free ride cus work sucks!

my dad was a ski bum back in the 70's, he supported himself for 3 years being a liftie, and waxing skis, so he's cool with me skiing all the time.

I wish I could do that when I get outta school. That would be crazy.

Well i'm plannin on spending a year between senior year and college, so I'll be bummin' then.

my mom told me to graduate early so i can get more ski-bumming years in before i'm broken or dead....

like, straight up told me to. so i was all "chyeahhhhh, fo sho!" but yeah, righteous!!

It's "JEA", girl.

As an well-known member of NS i thought you of all people would know that!

No chyeah. It's too gangster for skiing. and righteous is surfer.

I don't say "jea" when talking to skiers. only to nonskiers. And I say it in excess when speaking to common folk.

skiing doesn't need more JEA, the entire world needs more "jea".

And too gangster for skiing???

NOTHING is too gangster for skiing, son!

thats sick my dad is all for me bumming around for a few years after school. but do you really think youll be able to get back on track after ur done, or will you just end up bummin for your whole life??

my parents where chill to. although there been bitches this usmmer with work and shizzle, oh well on ly 7 months til im back in canada haha woot.

i told my parents almost the same thing and they were chill with it too. Sept i told them my plan was to work as a rig pig for the spring/fall and make like 60,000 and then live off that. im still gona work on the montian to give me a little more money, but i dont want 2 jobs

I was thinking about being a ski bum for a year or so after I graduate. I told my parents that and they really didnt care...prolly cause my dad did that at Sun Valley back in the 70s. I dont know tho...I feel like id love it too much and never do anything with a degree, haha.

i was talking to my parernts i think im gona take a year off after senoir year and go out to somewhere like tahoe and ski and work to pay to support myself. Then come back and go to college which I would have already been accepted into

I think after my senior year in highschool, I'm going to take a year off and figure out what I want to do with my life. But during that time, I'll be sking.

i would need to find a couple of other kids doing the same thing to split the rent for a place and just chill and ski all day

yea man, I spent 5 months in Val D'Isere sleeping on floors before doing a degree and it was for sure the best 5 months of my life. Broke as a joke but getting so much ride time. yeeeaa. My parents thought it was a good idea too.

My parents are awesome with that sort of stuff, I'm planning of heading to the U.S. and N.Z. and skiing for a few years and they seem happy with that.

my mum is sweet with it.im not even going to uni and ive just been travellin round doing seasons and getting shitty jobs, trying to be a photographer.my mums chill tho, so that helps.

Cool, I saw the snowpark thing in your sig, so asked, and only then checked your profile.

I was in Queenstown and just wondered if I had met you, but it's unlikely as I only went to Snowpark a few times.

go for it, don't aim for two jobs though, aim for no job at all. when i did a season we had a ski bum live on or floor for three months, he covered one shift a week for each of the four guys in my room and got all the leftovers he could eat. most season workers will happily do what they can to help, just be cool, take life as it comes, know when you've outstayed your welcome and buy everyone else drinks whenever you have a bit of money. if that fails then try and get a job

my family supported it only because i was supporting myself but i made my opwn decision and im done ski bumming. i dont regret it at all it was sooo much fun but now i need to finish school and be rich so i can have a bigger house to ski bum out of.

I can't believe that anyone's parents wouldn't be supportive of something like this. My parents know how much skiing means to me and know that now I'm finished my education I'm going to focus on skiing whether they like it or not, so they're cool with it. You're an adult now, it's your decision.

my dad said he would buy me a house wherever i wanted then pay for everything, and he said i can have all of his money when he dies so i never have to work a day in my life.

thats sounds very similiar to my plans, hopefully my parents r game 4 it too, maybe go out west 4 a while and just get a crappy job and apartment, enough to pay 4 a season pass and food... good luck wit that

My parents were all for it too, but i went to college in a ski bum town, then got a real job in a ski bum town and balance alot of skiing and work. Sometimes that is what is meant to be and it will all work out for you, best of luck man!

my parents arent bad like that, but they wouldnt let me be a ski bum straight from school - i have to finish my degree or something first..

That's what I did this past year and it was really fun. I just worked at Moonlight Basin as a part-time lifty and skied every other day. Unfortunately this was one of the worst snow years on record, but I still manged to have some fun with trips to Jackson and Moab.
