SKI Austria

The skiing is sick! The mountains are huge! It really depends where you go, some places have good parks, some dont. Any idea where you are going?

 
yeah some parks are good, ive only been to zurs, st.anton and those places around theyre, parks are ok but skiing is great.

the nordpark is very good, it's the mountain where the austrian open were held!

the best park in winter are definitely kaunertal, nordpark, flachauwinkel and soelden!

i ski in sölden - park is good (especially during the summer camps in june/july - they make a bigger effort then) but if you're used to parks in the US you might be disappointed.

the sick thing about austria aren't the parks, it's the endless big mountain (freeride) opportunities. no one to tell you where you're allowed to go and where not - if you can handle it that is. you need to know your stuff, and that also means knowing about the prevailing conditions.

im going to the st. anton area next february or early march with my dad and a friend...my dad used to ski over there is it any good...he tells me its good but i want to hear from somebody who has skiied there recently

^ its ridicilous if you have alot of snow, its pretty dangerous area thought with avalanches and stuff.

But when i where theyre we didnt have any powder at alll, still pretty fun skiing.

me too just looking for a big resort so my rents and brother can go skiing and i can go and hit the park...any suggestions?

precisely. if you are going to ski the alps, then ski the alps, dont ski the park. you can do that without spending mad loot to go to europe. i was in innsbruck last winter and it was pretty epic. skied stubai, axamer adn schlick (which sucks), and st. anton which is absolutely massive. our weather wasnt the greatest, it was super cold, but my favorite place was axamer.

dishwalla go to les deux alps if you want a good park they should have europes best from what ive heard.

Or else i could recommend Val Thorens, huge ski area with 3 big resorts connected to eachother, and also 3 different parks that where pretty nice..

^yeah for anyone next year who wants to to some urban stuff around innsbruck I will definetly be down, and have some expertise.

yeah im going there probably the first week of march..i dont know where..st. anton.. probably and stubei...spelling...innsbruck...my dad was telling me about all these places except st. anton because i read about it in freeze the one issue...looks amazing

you don't know what you're talking about. the arlberg (the big ski area st. anton belongs to) is no more dangerous than any other resort with backcountry skiing.

actually it is somewhat saver even that other resorts, because the backcountry is constantly tracked out which packs the snow and makes the snow pack more stable.

i would know, this is where i grew up. i'm not kidding when i say it's one of the best ski areas in the world. go for it.

ok lozza, I talked to another guy that where bourne there and had lived there for his hole life, ski guide etc etc, and he said that it was a little bit more dangerous because its pretty steep everywhere but maybe he was wrong.

And oh do you still live there because i where wondeing if they found that guy that where lying under like 8 meters of snow when i where there, some american snowboarder or something like that.

hey dallan,

yep that's right, they still haven't found the american snowboarder who died along with 3 canadians that day in the avalanche. they searched for days but had to give up. not even the avalanche dogs had a chance.

about the steepness of the terrain at the arlberg: for austrian standards you can't really say its steeper than the norm. for example if it snows 1 m within a night at the arlberg you can ski as usual. if that happened in sölden they would have to close most of the ski area.

^ YEAH, it's pretty retarded to go there in the winter and try to ski park but i've heard early season can be super slow in Europe. I went to innsbruck last year for spring break. Axamer was the fucking illsteeze (hahah, i said it.) You don't really go to Europe for treeskiing but the pitches at that ski area were awesome. Huge, old trees that have some really good spacing in between and a fun pitch. that whole week in Innsbruck was the best time of my life because it was dumping all week and the partying was fun as hell.

And just so conservatives don't take it to heart

ya, seriously dont make that trip just to ski park. you can do that here.

i went about 4 years ago, and i gotta say, that had i not gone over with a cracked heel, it woulda been some of the best skiing i've ever done. but i can say that the nightlife in St. Anton is pretty damn sick, it jsut seemed likke all the damn crazy austrians would still be walking home from the bars at 7 in the morning. good shit i tells ya. good times. the park seemed pretty good, but any park is good compared to hwat i got to work with. but really, go there to ski the mountains, not park

There are some good parks like Mayrhofen or Silvretta Nova, but they are not as big as those in the US or in Canada

yes, but this winter silvretta wasn't such good ...

the best resort to go is StAnton/ Lech

I ski there most of the time. The park is nice, but nothing against these huge ones in US

But the Mountains on Arlberg are great. There are a lot possibilities to jib in Backcountry....

And of course BIG lines ;D

 
I forgot: the nightlife is great. there are cool bars everywhere, but hey: the beer is really expensive... but it's great :D

 
^I'm from lech and live in innsbruck to study. also spend a lot of time in sölden (ötztal) - great off piste terrain but no one knows it, we've always got everything to ourselves.
