Sketching

So today I went to the local art store picked up a sketchpad and sat down to relax and mess around. It's been at least 6 years since I have actually sat down to sketch something besides little doodles in school. It actually turned out pretty elaborate. Since I'm still rusty I just decided a mechanical pencil would work for now but what kind would be better for future reference? Any tips? Here's the pic for those interested.

Wow, nice work man. I wish I had some sort of artistic skill in me, but I don't When I think something will turn out good, I look up and it sucks. I can't get the shading correct and my sketches in general suck. Nice work. I see lot of good art here on NS. Check out the post your skiing sequence drawings thread?

you didnt shade at all. gotta shade

get some different pencils. never use mechanical. i used a HB, 2H, 2B, and extra dark pencils for these. i just got charcoals and i think im gonna start drawing again when i get bored

thread jack!

im not very solid on a lot of things. i tried shading somewhat but not enough to create the sort of definition you have in your sketches, which are really good. a matter of fact, im happy you thread jacked haha

as for your picture, try not to outline everything (crowbars.) dont draw the lines where the edge of the crowbars are. also, the shade of the helmet, crowbars, and bandana is all the same (white.) gotta work on shading, and making the helmet look more round and 3d. as for the line art and shape drawing, you really gotta compare everything relatively. no one in the world could buckle that chinstrap, and the buckle itself is too small. you gotta ask questions like, "how far down the guy's? face does the chinstrap go? how big is the chinstrap compared to say, an outrigger?" and the stickers, you gotta realize youre not looking at that jiberish sticker head on. youre looking at it at an angle, therefore it shouldnt be a circle, but more of an oval. the holes in the helmet should be darker, cause theyre deep and theres no light in them

That's great advice, I wasn't thinking about any of that while drawing. I'll make sure to keep all those things in mind from now on. It's super relaxing and relieves any tension that you have too

Everyone is entitled to their own taste of music, and I understand that you don't like his music. I personally think he has composed some great music but a lot of people haven't heard most of the songs on his earlier mixtapes.

try using an actual pencil, you'll be able to shade much easier if you tilt it. if you really want to get technical about pencils, look up how the hardness effects how they draw and things along those lines. i used to know about those things but i haven't done a real pencil drawing in a while. unless you're in some art class, look up sketching tips and techniques if you want to learn more.

looks like you're figuring out the shading more.

I just don't like this as much because it's lil wayne and ther's tons of shit going on with his tattoos. it just makes the drawing too busy.

practice your shading. try drawing a sphere. make sure you start by deciding a lighting point. and remember, your shading should be gradual. it shouldnt go from dark to light. by this i mean it should go like this

very dark, dark, medium, light, very light

not like this

dark dark dark light light light
