Skateboarding vs. Rollerblading/ Skiing/ Bmx ect.

hey guy, I've been reading a lot of different thread with people claiming skateboarding as such a sick thing to do and is superior to a wide variety of different sports (but mostly blading). i just don't understand. maybe I'm ignorant, or maybe I'm just dumb, but i really don't see how it can compare to pretty much any sport in our industry of "extreme sports."i completely understand how tech it is, and how hard it is to do some of the stuff the pros do. the thing i don't understand is why people can say that it is just as extreme or more extreme than something where people are risking their life's trying things instead of risking a swollen ankle for a week. now this brings me to my next food for thought. the bigger things that skateboarders do (mega ramps ect.) seem to, for the most part, let pros bail without much harm if need be. they can slide down on their knees and be ok. i don't think anyone hitting the JOSS jumps last week could have bail half way through a trick and been ok with landing on their knees. i think my problem may be that i think tat the size or sheer risk makes whatever it is a lot more impressive. this is probably why my argument is the way it is, but it is also the way the action sports genre should be because there every sport requires technical difficulty to be good at to succeed in it. so I guess thats what i think should distinguish us from the rest or sports.i know i will get hate for this, and I'm willing to receive it as long as you can back your points up with logical explanations. i would also like people who agree to post and say why, or to back me up so i know I'm not the only one with these thoughts. MOST IMPORTANTLY i would never be saying any of this if skateboarding was a smaller sport than any of the other ones i have named. but the fact is, i think its probably the biggest action sport (4 famous teen types: skater, geek, jock, gangster imo), so it kind of represents our culture. so basically what I'm saying is, is this really the right sport to represent us?
SPARKNOTED: the defining attribute of action sports should be risk because every sport requires talent, but not always risk. so why is skateboarding at the forefront of the our genre of sports if most of the stuff done is only a risk on injury (like every sport has) but not necessarily in a serious way or death?

like someone said, concrete is a bitch. and no, i would disagree, skateboarders can't really bail. watch people like danny way do their stuff. if he bailed, he would die without a doubt. there is no case in skiing where you have to commit or die. skateboarding appeals to a wide range of people because its cheap, challenging, very tech, and looks so sick with good style. i will always rather wreck off a 50 ft jump on skis than sliding out on a skateboard

The only skateboarding I do is longboarding, and I only got into that recently. I have ridden skateboards a little bit my whole life though, but I can only do a pop shuvit and like almost a kickflip.

I'll honestly say that skateboarding is the hardest sport ever. Period. I know people who are 25 and have skated for 20 years, heavily, and can only land a kickflip like one out of ten times. Skateboarding is nearly impossible, and I have no idea how people do it honestly. The mechanics of an ollie totally dumfound me. And if you don't think people can get hurt skating, I recommend you look up Danny Way either jumping The Great Wall of China, or breaking the skateboard land speed record.

On ski's you fall on snow, which is soft. On BMX you don't fall that much at all, and most big jumps are dirt. Skating your pretty much always falling on concrete, which fucking hurts. I have wounds still from falling off my longboard at the highest speed I'm comfortable at, like a month ago. I fall on skis at the highest speed I'm comfortable at, which is as fast as I can possibly go, and nothing happens. I wouldn't even think about taking a skateboard off a jump I would hit on skis.

its too early to argue with your whole post, and you do have some good points, but if yo watch xgames everyone who looses there board in their air hitting the mega raps or huge qp just slide down on their knees, no big deal. thats not life or death.
and with the concrete hurts, yes it sure does. but i think I've seen bmx/rollerbladers drop from higher up and land on concrete and ride it out than any skateboarder would ever do. i have seen videos of rollerbladers doing cork 7s down a stair set. im sorry but i just don't see how thats not more cool than doing a varial or something down a set of stairs, even if it is more technical.

Skateboarding is crazy hard but not usually crazy dangerous.

I don't skateboard because I don't see the fun in landing a flippy trick once every 25 tries.

danger should have nothing to do with how "good" a sport is... you cant rate a sport by how cool it is or how dangerous it is.

skateboarding is popular because anyone can do it, and its the cheapest sport to get into, and you can do it anywhere... sure theyre not going off huge jumps and dying all the time, but why does that matter at all?

defining the best 'extreme' sport by how dangerous it is is just a stupid idea to be honest.

The mega ramp is super safe. If they need to bail they just land on their knees and slide. And there really wasn't much risk in breaking the speed record either. He fell and just held on. Even if he let go at 70 he would have walked away, he was wearing leathers.

Skateboarding is sick, but it's true that at the level most people are doing it at it isn't as dangerous as the other "extreme" sports.

yeah alot of riders fall alot. and hard. its just the dudes at the skatepark ride and ride and ride so you never really see them learning new stuff. heres an example of why i disagree. no disresepct, i just think BMX deserves a but more hardcore points.

as you can see, Props does a good job of showing just how hard the best guys in the game can go down. i just see crashing on a bike as a very unfun thing to have happen. being a mountainbiker and from riding fixed, fuck i know how shitty it is when your bike ends up hurting you more than the crash itself.

You have no fuckin clue about what you're talking about and obviously you've never been to a street spot or skatepark where riders shred because you would have known better. WE fuckin fall and real hard. Getting hit in the back, face, etc by a 20+ pounds bike hurts.

IMO every sport is as hard as you want it to be. There is none that is harder or easier than the other, they are all equal. There as been several threads about this issue and everything has been said.

I think the most people who are killed skiing are gapers hitting trees . This catagories is not really comparable to skateboarding or an extreme sport period because its not considered extreme.

alright what about kids that break there necks on jumps ? there is more injury risk for skiing then skateboarding

yes i think it's not super duper dangerous, but it's pretty fucking dangerous . i haven't read the whole thread, but if it hasn't been mentioned yet: if you look at jake brown who popped too hard off the vert wall and a few others who didn't clear the gap you'll get an idea of the risks. i'm gonna have to say that it's not as dangerous as rollerblading, but it's more dangerous than skiing because rails, steps, and concrete that are 100% free of snow hurt like hell. also, you can go fairly big in the streets if you're good. don't forget that if you land with one foot you can do a massive split and break a leg easily. bmx riders don't fall nearly as often and they can save themselves most of the time, but a bike fall tends to be more painful (higher speeds, more air, same surface, heavy jutting metal equipment). i skateboard and i can tell you that it's far more painful than skiing, though. my 2 cents.

Actually I do know exactly what I'm talking about, BMX was like the only sport I did in highschool. Granted I did only do racing and flatlanding though, but I don't know. I barely ever fall off my bike. I guess I'm not hitting skate parks though.

is danger what makes a sport cool?? I think that's a pretty silly reason for liking something, in my opinion.

The big difference is skateboarding has a bunch of faggy fan boys who think its the hottest shit ever. I am not saying all or even most skateboarders are like this but that group of kids who just skate because its what everyone else does thinks that skateboarding and snowboarding are cool therefore everything else is gay and sucks.

dude seriously tho what else defines it? i think its a mix of skill and risk taking. if there is no danger in an action sport, then it should just be a regular sport like baseball instead of one that is featured in the xgames ect.

+1

Danny Way Continue watching passed the little intro about the other, more minor bails he had before the main one

disagreeing, i broke a board every month and didn't have the money to keep buying em, blading is way cheaper

skateboarding will give you the most injurys hands down.
everytime you ollie you have to land on the board and keep riding its not just jumping in the air wearing boots. if you dont land directly on the board keeping your balance you slam, hard, on cement.

who cares... do what you personally enjoy and stop being childish and poking fun at others.

however, anyone thats ever seen a legitimate rollerblading video should know whats up...

i ride bmx and ive always gone way bigger and harder than on a skateboard. but as a skateboarder id have to say i have always found it more difficult and dangerous.

in my opinion.

bmx is more ballsier than skateboarding

skateboarding is more dangerous than bmx

snowboarding/ skiing isnt as bad.

...just feels that way

oh and the all have risk too, skateboarding isnt as bad, just more frequent, bmx, falls arnt as often but they f**k shit up when they do, most inline is just strght insane, and skiing head a knee injuries are very popular, they all got risk and are pretty close to equally difficult/ballsy although skiing is quiet easier than the rest. i really dont see reason for the hate between sports though, we should be saving that for something common, like scooters for example, haha, unless theyre going big ofcourse

Are you still talking about skateboarding when you say there is no risk? My friend broke his wrist today skateboarding. Maybe if i show him this thread his injury will just disappear?

no dude, its definitely an action sport, i def don't deny that. I'm just saying that the hating from some skaters on rollerblading has to stop, because if anything there is more risk involved in it and just as much skill. and so since, how I see it, skill and risk make the challenge of an action sport, i dont see how rollerblading ect. are doing any of that worse or not as well as skaters. idk im probably not explaining it right, but yaaaa. and tell ur friend i hope he gets better too!

From what I've seen at my local skatepark, it seems that whenever a skateboarder bails, they can still land on their feet. Or if they screw up on a kickflip or some other flip-trick thing, they just trip and get back on, But with roller blades, If you slip out, youre going down. A BMX you can kind of bail but your bike usually gets in your way and you slam down pretty hard.

KK Hate all u want but i myself dont even skateboard but for my brother thats his life, the amount bails ive seen him himself do, and other people do for example the vids^ which i think is disgust but decided it needed to be done. The fact that you thin k its anyless dangerous or respectable sickens me, i mean you can't really judge their very different sports. I think anyone who can do this kinda stuff diserve just as much respect as any sport.

HAHAHAHA this is the most fucking stupid thing i've heard all day. bikers take GNAR falls dude.

but in the end, it shouldn't be about how dangerous the sport is. I agree with whoever said the OP would text in dumont...good call haha

Have you seen the shit that Candide Thovex does? If he doesnt go balls to the wall badasss FTW ALL THE WAY he would die, The big air for BMX is a wooden ramp, nice try at making skateboarding sound hard. Danny Way HAS fallen, he fell when he was jumping the great wall and all that happened was that he broke his ankle.

skateboarding is probably at the forefront because it was basically the first to take off. but if you consider it as i knew it, an "extreme" sport, than, yes they usually involve taking a risk.

i dont skateboard but from watching it i can tell you that there are so many people that skateboard that suck dick its not funny. there are very few people that are actually amazing as fuck at skateboarding. sooo many kids are reallllly fucking good at skiing just as good as everyone else but to be super tech at skateboarding is very hard. think of it this way, i have seen people that can hit big down rails skiing in 1 year of skiing, you dont see kids hitting big down rails on skateboards after one year of skateboarding lol.

yes but the kiids who are skiing, also have a foundation on how to ski down the hill... When they switch to park, they dont need to learn to ski, but to slide rails

With skateboarding, You have to start and learn how to ride the board, and then learn rails and what not

All in all, BMX is the most dangerous. ive done everything, and the most diffucult has to be BMX. Conrete+BMX is way worse than skateboarding... You cant just step off of your bike.

And for those who say rollerblading is easy... i would love for you to do a 540 kind grind, or a back royale 900 out....

Yes rollerblading is easy to learn, but once you get good at it, its super hard. You have to at least be able to throw 5's down everything, and have to switch up on grinds. Plus spinning into handrails, and out is not easy whatsoever

Skateboarding is cool in all, but really its just positioning your feet, and flicking, hoping a piece of wood spins around enough. I have mad respect for Bowl, and Vert skating, but street isnt too bad. Handrails are gnarly yes, but 360 flips are way overrated... Having to chase a board around hoping to land a trick isnt fun... and once you learn the basics, its mad easy to learn evverything else.

Skateboarding isnt just kciking the board away.. if you want to try and land the trick (which is the point) you have to try and keep your feet in the right spot hoping the board is in the right spot. if either of those are off even slightly you can break an ankle soo easy. or if your going fast and hit a little rock or something you can slam. that shit doesnt happen on bmx/blades.
im betting most of the peopel who say skating is easier have never even ollied a 5 stair. i have and im also sure i could strap on blades and jump down 5 stairs, and i could also ride down the stairs on my bike.

go skateboarding it is so fun but its really hard its crazy hard compared to all the others if you let go of your focus while skateboarding youll die its really rewarding it wows all the girls and is so fun

funny thing... first stair i ollied on a skateboard was a 5 stair...

second of all, if its sooo easy to break your ankle, why arnt all the pros walkin on crutches... yes you can do it, but at the same time, its easy to prevent

third of all, why would you ride down the stairs? you would jump them

also, i understand a 5 stair is quite diffulcult... that is why rollerbladers generally do bigger stair sets...

goto youtube, and look up crazy huge stair jump... 20 flat 20... and he 180's after being towed in by a car... im pretty shure a skateboarder has yet to do that, correct me if im wrong

Your comparing intermediate skateboarding, to begginer rollerblading

noooo dude, i think ive posted about 5 times in this thread that it is not all about risk, but its not all about skill ether(when it comes to these types of sports). what dumont did was not any bigger or more risky than what any of the other competitors did in the xgames. and it was so much less tech (skilled)than what everyone else did, why would i want to support that over pks doubles?

ok well that was my point.
5 stairs on a skate is somewhat hard and its easy to hurt yourself.
5 stairs on blades is easy and you wouldnt hurt yourself.
also, id rather see a stylie kickflip down a set rather then a hucked 7 (even if its a bigger set)

i agree but tech skate tricks on and off rails are harder than anything i dont even skate and yes i used to BMX. just watch what they do on and off rails with a skate board its fucking retarded dude.

the defining attribute of sandwiches should be cheese because every sandwich requires meat, but not always cheddar. so why is provolone at

the forefront of the our genre of sandwhich if most of the stuff done is

only a provolone on wheat (like every sandwhich has) but not necessarily in a cheddar or white?
