/\ incorrect and correct. all that old stuff like skatalites, desmond dekker, etc. is real ska but so is some of the newer 3rd wave stuff. catch 22 rocked (past tense) but now the old good singer, tomas kalnoky, went to (ive said it before and i'll say it again) one of the best current bands, Streetlight Manifesto. i have progress but im not sure about it, i dont really get it. some of it sounds like sublime, some like real ska and some I dont know. and if you dont like op ivy, you need something. possibly...........courage, maybe a heart

^no doubt is the farthest thing from Ska now. When they were and underground band yes but now they are fuckin pop and i cant stand them one god damn bit. I have to agree streetlight manefesto is one of the best bands i have heard in a long time

Catch 22 rocks. Old Reel Big Fish was decent, as was old Less Than Jake. Rx Bandits RULE. The Progress CD is amazing. Bosstones were good as well. I'd have to say that Catch 22 is by far my favorite ska band though.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

I thought Streetlight Manifesto was a Catch 22 side project with some other NJ band - am I wrong there?

bambam, yes, youre kind of wrong. streetlight is a band that features people from catch22 but arent in it anymore like the old (good) singer tomas kalnoky and some other people from the 'keasby nights' era of catch22. apparently the two groups really dont like eachother anymore, evident in one of SM's lyrics 'if you hate me so much then stop singin my songs'. and...

ATTENTION: all of you who just said you like catch 22 or theyre good or whatever, assuming you dont only like new c22, check out streetlight manifesto, you will NOT be dissapointed (its impossible)

and bandits of the acoustic revolution (botar) if you can find any (a SM side project with like 10 other guys/girls

 
you guys are forgetting some of the best ska out there... the toasters, the slackers, unsteady, skankin' pickle, (kinda=>) op ivy, mustard plug, ect..... then there is new stuff like older less than jake, and the voodoo glow skulls. all really good stuff. i would say though that the ones i listed first are better.

Well, I've only got Alone In A Crowd and Keasby Nights (one of my all time favourite albums) by Catch 22 - wasn't that the same singer on both? I've not listened to Alone... in a while - I'll have to dig it out. And I've not heard Dinosaur Sounds yet - any good?

Voodoo Glow Skulls - I've got The Band Geek Mafia and Steady As She Goes by them and they are both good I think. I prefer Steady As She Goes though - a bit more melodic I think.

morning glory is the best crs7 band, hams down. ska has turned into alternative musics bastard child. good lord people, toss on some don drummond and throw out all your rx bandits

 
Planet Smashers are great, especially now that Neville Staples from the Specials is working with them. RX Bandits' new cd is good, but i like their old stuff MUCH better. Metal Man and Secret Agent Man and stuff is so much better. Their new stuff almost sounds more like 311 or something, but i still like it. Rancid is good, but i don't like their new cd as much, kinda sell-outy. Mad Caddies are amazing, and Streetlight Manifesto is like the best cd i've heard... Anyone into Five Iron Frenzy? I didn't know an entire ska band could be so pissed off about what America did to the Indians (Native Americans, that is).

And i did that because i could go on for hours on hour even though it may sound like Rancid changed their music for mainstream, it's more like their just trying to experiment and see what their fans can let them get away with. Red Hot Moon was great until that fucking quasi-toaster comes in, it sounds more like hip-hop than dub, like freakin' Transplants. And arrested in Shanghai is just the worst fucking song they ever did. In that one usage of the word 'sell-outy,' i was trying to simply convey my feelings that on the outside it would appear they changed their musical style to make them more popular with main-stream crowds and ultimately make more money. Fucking joke you say? tell it to Rancid.

yea man that explains there new cd. like no ska at all maybe they are just gonna get rid of the horns altogether. I like ska tho, Slapstick and Sreetlight is good and it's definatly better than punk

Stupid Less Than Jake, although I like their new album, compared to their old stuff it's total crap. And fuck them for denying their roots, their first couple of albums are obviously ska, not shitty-ass 'rock with horns.' Why do so many ska bands care that they're called ska? One of the semi-local ska bands in my area started calling themselves a 'horn-injected rock band' and it's annoying cuz they're just a ska band. Don't deny your roots!
