Fill me in on the whole 'those skis are too short, so you're not cool' thing?!?!

I'm 5'7' and 171's are just about right for me.

I thought we were moving away from the 190 - 201 racing skis??

my skis are teh exact same height as me. I ski on 168 and im 5'5. Does anyone agree that is your skis are shorter than you it would be kinda unstable in the air or no?

skis should be the same hieght as you. i have 189 pistols and they are up to my forhead. i could deffinatly go for some 195 pistols that were a little stiffer

for a general scale of height: beginners, skis at nose. intermediate, skis at forehead. advanced, taller than skier. But, with twins I feel like you need a little extra something since you gain tail wash, esp with moguls. As for the 'I thought we were moving away from 199 201 skis'. The only reason skis are shorter is because shaped skis enable less running less, not because people couldn't handle the longer ski. I personally feel a little unstable on shorter skis. I had the 176 skogens last year and thought they were WAY too short. all in preference and skill I guess

I'm 6'3', 200 lbs. A 171 is too small for me, even to jib on. Not everybody is a midget like you and the rest of the pro jibbers out there.

 
Just for the record. I ski the 176 Skogens and they are perfect for me. Don't care what anyone else says.

I just find it funny that 5cm makes that big a difference. I agree with 99% Balls/Skill and 1% Equipment but wanted to understand why people care about length so much.

you should give a fuck what other people think. Ski on whatever the hell you want too. If you think your cooler for skiing on 210's fill your boots. If you think your cooler for skiing on 171 cause Vinnie Dorion does, fill your boots.

When I started skiing my parents bought skis for me that were above my hand when I stood with my arms stright up in the air. Now my ski level is at the top of my head.

 
my pe's are about 2cm shorter than I am... Im about 181cm and I think that good size is 175cm to 181...

 
Right about now people are seeming to think that riding a longer ski makes you better, for a while it wasn't like that, but now it's back to the 'Longer the Ski, Better the Skier' bullshit. I personally think it's shit. I have a 164cm right now, I'll be getting a 175cm soon, and I bet I could ski something much longer, but I don't... why? Because you the hell wants to ride some massive ski just because it stereotypes you as a better skier? Ride what you want, ignore the trendwhores and people looking for attention. If you can ski just the same on a 171 as a 160 as a 190, then go for it.

beginner tip up to your nose/top lip

intermediate tip up to your forehead

expert tip same height as you or taller

presonally i like the ski to be above my height by 2-3 cms especially if you're riding twins because you lose a bit of running surface because of the flaired up twin. I also started skiing when i was 3 when the 210 straight skis were the cool thing so skiing alonger ski is just natural for me

I don't think you quite have it Steve - it's not just the length of the ski, but a function of the width combined with the length, plus some sidecut thrown in. A short but wide ski can be much more versatile than a long skinny ski. You can't just say 'Short skis suck, long skis truck' anymore.

Racers have gone shorter, freeskiers have gone wider.

 
buying skis that don't fit your body and riding style just to satisfy people who think long skis kick ass is stupid. Stop whining on ns, go to your local shop, get properly fitted, then demo stuff, then buy something. Easy isn't it. Or just pick a ski that looks cool and seems to be about the right size like I do.

if the ski is taller than you its gonna be more stable on big landings, but its also going to slow down your rotation alot. im 5'8' and rode 179 pes at camp this summer and they were stable as hell, but i couldnt spin with them, so now im on 171 1080s which are about 1 cm shorter than me and i think that they will be perfect

 
Why does it really matter what height you are? Shouldn't weight be more important? eg, someone who weighs a lot but is shorter would want a longer ski and someone who is tall and skiiny would want a shorter ski

This Week I went to Outdoor school Camp with my grade.My teacher was in a Field talking to his Girlfriend at 11:30 pm, my friend and I were suspicious so we flashed a flaslight in the eyes of my teacher and they were closed.
