yo!

Anyone know anything about this school? I got accepted into the fin arts program for next year and I'm currently filling out my application for the film production program. biggest pain in the ass! hopefully it's worth it.

but yea, I visited the school in december and its doooope. such a nice setting and not toooo far from whistler.

any of you go there?

from what I know of it, it is a fine school but it lacks the whole "college experience". meaning its pretty much you go there to learn and not too much else in terms of parties and social life. not very many people live on campus but in terms of skiing you are about 2 hours away from whistler and not too far away from the locals(mount seymour, grouse, and cypress)

well there is the rumour that SFU has the highest rate of suicides for any university in Canada...

ya wtf I just read that...

FUCK

im spending so much time on this app adn second guessing everything!!!

hopefully I get into UBC...

haha don't worry about it too much, just be prepared for foggy weather 95% of the time. It's basically on a mountain so it's pretty constantly damp.as for the school, a bunch of my friends go there. they are all pretty meh about it, however they are all living from home so they go for classes and that is pretty much it. University is what you make of it, if you want to get involved you just need to put the effort in.

Hahahaha I am in basically the exact same situation you are in. Applied to UBC, hoping to get in there, if I don't I don't know wtf I'll do lol. SFU seemed sweet, but now I'm kind of worried lol.

I go to SFU, though Im in the Criminology program I've heard we have a really great arts program, especially compared to UBC which is more science focused. If you're familur with vancouver you know that your 20 mins away from the locals and about and hour and half away from whistler. Also, prettty close to baker. The campus isn't all that exciting, (though I live at home so I don't expierence a lot of campus life), but I've heard living in residence up the mountain is great. Also, its very close to downtown vancouver which has a great night life! I've had some great profs there, and met a lot of cool people, highly recommended.

Hahaha that's the first thing I was going to bring up.
But seriously, being from Van I had a good opportunity to get in there and it's not quite for me. Since there aren't really many people actually living there, I haven't heard many good things about the social life. I don't like the concrete architecture either. And with the fact that it's on a mountain, it's foggy/rainy much more often than lots of other places.
It does have rad mountain biking right down the mountain though, and is probably half an hour from grouse/seymour. If you don't get into UBC it's probably a good bet. Or you could go to UVIC like I did and have a rad time too. No easy access to mountains here but it's sooooo chill and there are lots of NSers here.

Ahhh so much to think about. I'm also accepted to the uni of Calgary. Shit I gotta get this work done. Thanks for the info guys, +karma.

Hmm, I was planning on applying for the business program at SFU, seems pretty legit and being closer to mountains is always a bonus

I did my first year at SFU. The suicide thing isn't true, jsut a rumour that was the first thing they told us in res.

Good school, close to mountain, but less of the traditional university feel.

I go to UBC now, and enjoy the feel a bit more. Any questions about either school, jsut holla.

Hey.
One of my best friends here at architecture school has a fine arts degree from SFU. I've seen a ton of her work, and photos of the studios/exhibitions.
She raves about how good the program/experience was, and from the looks of everything it seems top notch.
I know that SFU doesn't have the reputation of UBC or Emily Carr, but I'd definitely give it a chance. It looks quite progressive.I would hesitate to go to UofC though. I've known too many people that have had unpleasant experiences there, and from my visits I can vouch for that.Hope this helps!

PLUS it's super close to grouse/seymour etc, and whis is only 1.5 hours away.and arthur erickson designed the campus (baller status) haha

ha at SFU I was in a small French Politics and Administration program, only 15 people were in my year.

At UBC I'm taking Human Kinetics

Alright well apparently its like 34 min from Grouse, 45 from Seymour and 52 from Cypress so thats makes me pretty happy, any word on the business courses at both, from what I know UBC and SFU are both pretty legit.
