I've thought about this too, and it is a decent idea... But the thing about graphics in the signature is that in really clutters things up.
Go look at other message boards where every single person has huge banners of all different shapes/sizes in their signature, and you'll see it's hard to differentiate each person's post. Some are even animated, which makes it even that much straining on the eyes. Plus, there's the bandwidth/speed issue.
It's a notable idea, but I don't think the pros outweigh the cons.

I think picture signatures would work if they were required to have a certain filesize and if they were all the same shape.
