Shoulder Injury

So i know theres not really any doctors on this site, and most people will probably tell me to just go see a specialist but I figure enough people have gone thorough this that someone might be able to shed some FREE light on this. Key word free.

I have a reoccurring injury on my right shoulder. When i fall an put my arm out it feels like its pops out of place. My arm goes completely numb and my fingers start tingling.. I cant move my whole arm for about 2 or 3 minutes depending on how bad the fall was. Eventually i regain movement but lifting it above my head will be difficult for about a week.

Am i dislocating it? I feel a pop but i never have to pop it back in... Rotator cuff? Nerve damage? Who else has had a injury like this?

I had that issue. If it's the same as mine it's a separating shoulder. Not a true dislocation the shoulder comes out of socket but relocates straightaway. It damages all the muscles and if you leave it long enough you will begin to wear the bone of the ball part of the socket. Eventually this can lead to the arm dislocating just by lifting the arm. To further complicate it you can develop a syndrome known as phantom dislocations. This occurs after a few incidents the muscles remember when they get to a position of dislocating and try just loosen meaning you can dislocate the arm with no force. The arm is actually trying to protect its self when it does this but it sucks and is still really painfull.

Unfortunately it needs proper rest and physio. Don't mess about with it, it will just keep getting worse if you ignore it. Mine got to the point where it would phantom dislocate if I lifted my arm above chest height. Mine needed two surgeries to fix it and I was out for over two years. It still sucks now, I had to have the socket rebuilt using the coller bone so now my arm stays in place but I can displace ribs instead. Not that bad really but still not fun.

Get an appointment to see a specialist as soon as you can and do what try say. Trust me missing say 3 months is better then being out for 2 years including a year of daily agony between operations.

^^ Good advice, Thanks.

It such a strange injury, i cant move it at all for a hot minute but then i get most of the motion back within about 15 minutes. It stays pretty weak but i usually just keep skiing. I know once I hurt it it will re-injure a lot easier for the rest of the season.

Well time to go see a ortho

Yeah it's the stretching of the muscles. At first it's so sore but give it a minute and the muscles relax again. It's exactly as mine was. It would hurt like fuck for a min or 2 but then get better and I would keep riding. But honestly don't. When you do it you really need to rest it. Don't try to ride on and rest it for a week or so. It's sucks but honestly it will just get worse and worse.

Your shoulder is actually sublexing

A separated shoulder is a completely different injury

All the other above information is correct but it could also mean you have a torn Labrum which requires surgery. Get it fully checked out with an MRI.

Yeah I have this same issue. I've had these semi dislocations countless times since high school and it happens a few times a year. A family member is a physiatrist and referred me to a surgeon for a labrum repair. Depending on how bad your situation is you can either focus on physio where you'll strengthen your shoulder muscles which will act to stablize your shoulder. The problem is that it'll just keep getting worse every time it subluxes.

As S.Shuster mentioned, getting a MRI will determine what exactly the problem is what your options are.

Good luck!

This sounds exactly like my shoulder.I dislocated it this summer at snowflex. It felt pretty alright after but now(2 months later) when I move it wrong or something my whole arm goes numb and I can't move it for a minute. Then it feels like 70% for a while.

Today I went to the gym and was doing squats and my shoulder started hurting so bad. Not because the bar was like resting on my shoulders but holding the bar and getting my arm in that position was awful. Also if I lay in a "freefall" kinda position it hurts like a mother fucker where my collarbone connects to wherever(but a little lower) and then on the outside near my upper arm. I can't lay down with my arm above my head at all either. I'm going to the doctor this week hopefully but has anyone had something like this happen?

go to a fucking doctor

Why?

You've got doctor NS and web MD right at your finger tips. Give me one example of anyone ever benefiting from going to a doctor, see you can't!

It's probably this. I had surgery 3 weeks ago to repair my labrum. It started when I was 16 I caught my tips hard doing a backflip and slammed my shoulder. I chipped the front of the bone and that allowed my shoulder to partially dislocate if I fell on it hard enough. If I had gone to a specialist at the time it could have saved me a lot of trouble. Since then it got worse to the point it would come out if I slept on it. Get surgery now and you'll be able to shred hard the second half of the season.

well if it gives you any hope, my shoulder is in pretty good shape now. Doctor told me i had a tag tare and that i might need surgery, instead i just rested it for a month or so in the off season and then hit the gym.

honestly once you get it back to the point where its not just falling out of the socket when you go to throw a ball, just start lifting. It helped me tremendously. Also now that i have a bit of muscle, when i fall i don't tend to put my arms out like i used to because i feel like i can just shoulder the fall without breaking my collarbone.
