Do you guys think we should get facebook-style notifications for when people quote reply us, or comment on a picture or video of ours?

I think one big concern would be the overwhelming amount of notifications you'd get. Especially if you make a thread that keeps going for years and got notified every time someone touched it. And if we kept getting notified, the front page would never change. You'd just keep coming back to the same threads to catch up with notifications and stuff.

I said just quote replies, not all replies. There would be way too many notifications if you got one for every reply.

my threads is very hard to look through and some threads you post in dont even show up.
i think notifications on video and photo comments and qoute replies would be sick though

Agreed, I think for media its a decent idea. Not for threads/forum posts tho.
Do note that facebook likely has like a billion dollar per year development budget. So doing everything they do is very difficult. : )
However, there is truth to this thread, and we've talked about it. One of the primary difficulties of NS is keeping up on what is happening. MyThreads does a great job of some things, but its scope is extremely limited.
Notifications could get too crazy, but if we did this we'd make it that you can choose what / how much you get notified of. For instance you could get daily emails instead of every time it happened of what is new.
I do think that notifications in general would be really cool. Especially to see how people are interacting with your content on the site as some others have said.
Brainstorm with this a little... lets just pretend like the sky is the limit, and why doesn't everyone post what kind of notifications they would like to see.
We'll process into our development queue and see where we can go with it.

My threads does work fairly well but to take care of the threads I think it would be best if you could "favorite a thread" so that it will forever be in your favorites. The problem with my threads is, once you click on it it's gone.

This. Favoriting a thread would be great. It allows you to watch a thread without having to post in it (end of the "my threads" useless posts). I also think you should be able to favorite pictures, videos, articles, & blogs.
And I think you should get notifications anytime someone posts on one of those categories that is personally yours. Including your feedback.

Interesting concept... but I'd need more detail on what you're suggesting. A notification / favorite / subscribe module like that would be intensely complex, so its very hard to see the specifics of what you're suggesting from one picture !

- you can see the latest video/pictures you saw in a order of time by day
2nd: ''Liked Videos''
- there would be the 1 to 10 rate like now but when you rate 10, it go in this section so when you're bored you go here and look at all the video you liked and have a good time..
3rd: ''Watch Later''
- here, you can put some video you want to see when you don't have the time like a long free movie or something like that so you don't forget about it..
4th: ''Favorites''
- put you're favorite pictures/videos in this section.. here's are your favorite media !

I really think that a notification system should be made !!! You sometimes make a comment/question on a picture and you forget which one it was or can't find it again to get the answer !! And it would same us the time it takes to go check every pic/vid to see if you got a comment !!!
I don't think it should be like the picture that Will.T added I was thinking of something a bit more subtle like this http://joris-blanc.com/ns/notifications_system.png that would then open a popup window like the message inbox!!

When a friend uploads some new pic/vid/forum thread etc. (without this i don't really see the usefulness of being friend with someone, except to send messages)
If ever your picture gets on NS frontpage or video of the day !!!!
Other little things that could be added.
A download link for the pictures (with eventually a download counter)
The ability to link a nametag with the credit/skier etc of the pictures an videos (something like this http://w3schools.com/php/php_ajax_livesearch.asp) and like that the skier in the picture could be notified with their picture
The possibility to add a paragraph in the description on pic/vid, with a html code (
) !!
Get an email if you have unseen notification or messages after 1 or 2 days !!!
And a little clock with the time on the website because I live in Switzerland and the times on forum posts/comments is hard to follow with the time difference !!!!

Yes! i was thinking about this today and i think notifications would be a great idea for NS. I also agree that it would get congested if got a notification for absolutely everything so here are my suggestions for notifications
-comments on pictures/videos/news posted
-new friend!
-quote reply in forums
-new page notification for threads created
eg. your thread is now 2 pages!
-Karma gained or lost from last login (so you know what exactly your getting good and bad feedback for)
-notification for content that made it to the home page

I have been saying this forever, the most helpful aspect would be if you got a notification for quote replies, that way you don't have to trawl through a whole thread to get to what someone said to you.
