before you flame me can you please read the post. so like most members of this site i love skiing and cant get enough of it, but there is one big problem. since i was a little kid i had a severe toe problem and 3 years ago i had some extensive surgery that was supposed to fix them forever and allow me to do any activities i wanted pain free. well last year and then into this year the pain got more intense and got to a point where i can no longer to jump. for me this is a huge loss becasue i used to love jumping and now i can no longer jump and i am starting to feel pain even when coming off rails. i have tried everything and had my boots fixed to try to help my problem. i have tried taking pain meds and sucking it up but skiing just isint the same any more. i was wondering if you guy think i should switch to snowbaording so i could once again return to hitting jumps and being able to enjoy park. i wakeboard in the summer but im not sure how that would translate into winter. just let me know what you think or if you have any other suggestions for me on how i can return to skiing 100% thanks.

Honestly, there is nothing wrong with snowboarding, especially if you have some sort of foot problem and just can't enjoy skiing anymore. Make do with what you can, and if thats snowboarding, then thats great.

there is nothing wrong with snowboarding, give it a try and if your foot feels better you can always come back to skiing. what about telemarking, have you considered that?

If it hurts to do it you might as well switch, the level of fun will be the same for the most part. If its ruining your snow experience I don't see why you wouldn't switch to still have fun

do it! just becuase skiing isn't fun anymore because of the pain, it doesnt mean you can't enjoy the mountains or terrain parks.

aaaannnnddd you can work on breaking down the hate between skiers and snowboarders.

I'd say just the learning curve is generally longer, its like riding a really unresponsive longboard is the best comparison I can make.

go for it if you get good boots and bindings your toes probably wont hurt. its definetly less impact as far as fucking up your knees and ankles.

Did you try custom liners (like surefoot makes)?  But yeah, if that doesn't work, I'd just snowboard.

I guess if there is no rehab or whatever you don't have much of a choice...

Landing tricks on a board definatly stresses other muscles, bones, etc. so you might be painfree again.

I would give it a shot cause skiing in pain for the rest of your life sucks and you would never be able to fully enjoy the mountains again.

dude what the fuck does that have to do with his toe pain?

whats the pain like, because you said you had modification made to your boots, but have you potentially tired a soft shell boot? i don't know if companies still make new version of the boots, but about 3 years ago rossi and dolomite offered basically full leather boots, a used pair might solve your problem

Hahaha...snowboard instructors HATE to hear that their student is a wakeboarder....weight distribution is different...snowboarding is okay...but if you go talk to a good boot fitter they may figure out what's wrong...

the first time i went snowboarding i did a "thumb down" when i wanted to slow down. there was no boat driver, only snow, so i ate shit.

landing on a snowboard is a lot less stressful than on skis. i've cased landings on skis and on a snowboard. on skis, as you all know, it can hurt like a bitch and bruse your heels. on a snowboard, you cant feel anything unless you case on a 40 + jump. the only time i have ever brused my heel on a snowboard was when i overshot a jump, landing on flat.

wow, think of what a toeless foot would look like.............. if i could use photoshop id make a picture but i cant, but that would look really...different.

ski switch all the time, then all the pain will be going to your heel,

give snowboarding a try and see if that is any better, the days of hating on snowboarding ended years ago

i dont see how this will help the pain in ur foot. wouldnt it hurt either way? maybe not because ur facing sideways...whatever

if it doesnt hurt you anymore to snowboard id go ahead and make the switch, or maybe u could get a custom boot. kinda expensive, but it could help you keep skiing

ya but wont you have to lean on your toe edge? and if you fall forward you would bash your toes.

i say go to a good boot fitter or a foot doctor(dont know the name of it) and tell him the problem, he'll hook you up

thanks everyone for the advice, i am going to see an orthopedic surgeon next week so he will tell me if there is anything else i can do to keep skiing. in regards to kids that were saying snowboarding will hurt my toes i tried it once last year and as long as i didnt carve to sharp i was fine hitting jumps and rails so it was better than skiing

i dont think snowboard boots are any more comfortable but id try it anyway its not gonna hurt well ok nvr mind it might but yeah id try it

kevin, i.....i.....i...didnt know....but seriously that sucks i wasnt aware of your problems. definitely see the foot doctor (possibly pedomitrist?). your progressing really fast man and your one of the best in gbury. it would be a shame to have to quit skiing. but go for snowboarding if you have to! good luck

dude, as much as that sucks, i think u defintly should switch to snowboarding. ive tried it b4, and its not that bad and fun. so u should man, looks like ur only option really

snow blades 4 life! u could snow bike, extreme sledding, kite board nah man snowboarding is still cool even tho we skies hate on it so much

Def don't quit skiing... Maybe you have a problem with your boots. I know you got problems with your toes and such, but my toes used to really hurt skiing with my Head boots. Just a suggestion. But do whatever man, as long as your out on the snow. That's the most important.

You can put a skier on a snowboard, but you can't take the skier out that snowboarder.

Peace

When I was in Europe two weeks ago, we were in the city and there was a hobo with no toes. He was showing them off for sympathy. I felt bad.

But anyways, Kev, you're a great skier and you should be happy with how far you've come. In terms of the average Gbury skier, you're amazing. Personally I don't care how you ride down the hill, as long as you're out to have a good time. That's what matters. I know you love skiing more, so maybe give that one more shot, but if all else fails, who cares? Try it at a session (with snow) at Jake's, maybe it could work out for you

Best of luck man, see you in school ;)

Snowboard boots sure do look comfortable as hell... I'm always jealous of that fact.

If you've tried going to a super good bootfitter, tried all kinds of different boots, rehab and everything else... then yeah fuck it just snowboard.

Snowboarding is dope as hell, and there's zero reason for conflict between the two sports. I mean you can still ride with your buddies on skis, I love riding with snowboarders.

Don't leave the mountains... and if skiing hurts too much then fuck it! Just don't get burtonized and develop a hate-on for skiing or anything like that. :)

Yeah man snowboarding boots are super comfy and snowboardings fun as hell. Id say try it, but like someone else said cut it off its not any better.

Word, and if you've tried snowboarding before, there's no reason to not try and switch. I've heard of many a skier switching to snowboarding to alleviate knee problems.

i wakeboard all summer too, and before this winter i had never been on a snowboard. and one day me and my buddy who snowboards switched. he took my skis i took his board. and i found snowboarding real easy i was sliding rails after 2 or 3 runs. i don't know if its because i wakeboard or not, i think they are pretty similar. I'd give it a try and see how you like it.

Yo dude..... snowboard for sure. Yesterday work I watched Picture This and Follow Me Around......and it definitely reminded me that Snowboarding is fucking ill. Who cares what you're riding on the hill, as long as you're up there.
