Should I Go to Bartending School?

So I was training as a mechanic, and because of some bullshit with my school and the economy and such, I'm not going to be able to get a certification for that anymore. My mom suggested bar tending school and even offered to pay the tuition.
Think I should do it? I heard it is sort of pointless, because the certificate won't get you a job at a bar really anyway and you are probably going to have to just bar back it for a while. But I'm in LA so I might be able to find a really legit one that will teach me to juggle flaming bottles and shit.
Anyone been? I'm sure theres a resort bartender or two on here. I do like bars and drinking a lot, and just generally talking about different types of beer and alcohol and coming up with crazy drinks. Plus I ran the kitchen of a bar once for a while so that is one good bar reference sort of.

nah beby gurl
you get a BUI, dat shit aint nothin. you gotta be hella dumb to get that shit.

oh. in montana you can. and I guess I always assume that if you can get in trouble for it on montana, you'll get in trouble for it anywhere.

Nah I quit drinking and driving when I was 19. I used to be real good at it though. I can still get a DUI on my longboard I guess but if a cop tried to give me one I would seriously be like, "WTF are you serious? I could be driving a car right now, I couldn't hurt anyone but myself." And then whenever it came up on an application/in conversation, whatever, I would just say it was on a skateboard, and people wouldn't care.

im going to bartending school in Denver. I think its the best job to have in a ski town besides being a groomer , but being getting a job as a groomer is next to impossible unless you now someone in charge.

yeah i bartend, and i started out running a kitchen of another bar a few years back... I personally didn't go to school, but then again, there is no need for me to learn to juggle bottles haha. My friend went to school for it and she got a job at a much nicer ( more skrilla ) bar... That may have something to do with the fact she has tits though haha.

Do it, you'll get tons of stories and I've heard it's really enjoyable. You'll meet some great people, too.And who doesn't want to know how to juggle flaming bottles of alcohol?

I would worry about washing more mugs before juggling bottles...and just life in general.

Don't trust the fact that they will find you a job because the same 15 guys (or girls) that just graduated are going for the same job.

If this is your only option then go for it, but to be honest it is a waste of time and money. I'm an f & b manager at a country club and I have had worse experiences with people that go to bartending school than people that just have actual experience. If you want to do it right, start out as a server to get the needed skill, and then you can eventually move up to a bartender. Ask any good bartender and I promise most of them will say they started off serving. The wait will be worth it, because you actually know what you are doing. Not to mention you were making money serving instead of spending it on a "mixology" degree (which people laugh at, when you put it on a resume)

how much does it cost to do this and how long does it take?

and then find out if it even matters. i don't know if it does, but i can imagine you can't pull up and be a bartender at squaw, or whistler without some sort of history in bartending.

i think it could be an awesome way to work through college. ski and school during day and work the bar at night. plus good bartenders never get fired or laid off, and restaurants seem to be doing alright. the tips are great also, claim what you want kinda deal.

First, you have to decide on what kind of bartending you want to do. I'd never want to tend bar for a bunch of disrespectful shithead drunks. I do however, tend bar at a nice place and its pretty kick ass. The tips are amazing and the people are genuine and cool. They come to enjoy a drink and some food, not get sloppy drunk.

The other thing you have to ask yourself if this is your future, and do you want to give up your weekend nights forever. It sucks, and it gets old. I'm doing this while I attend school for something a bit bigger. While the money is great, the schedule sucks ass.

i got pulled over for not having my rear light flashing this summer. yeah. pulled over, by a cruiser. im almost positive you can get a DUI.

Bartending is cool...Until you get introuble for selling a drink to an underaged kid who gets into a car acciedent and his parents come chasing after you.

yo man my dad bartends and I can for sure tell you bartending school is bullshit lots of high class bars and clubs could give less of a shit if you have a bartending degree . Someone mentioned before getting a server job first at a resturant/ bar . Build a customer relations base before juggling bottles and lighting drinks on fire. For someone young bartending is legit money for sure!

why don't you suck my balls you elitist cuntrag, not all of us feel like bussing tables or being bitch waiters, and like the guy said above, you go to bartending school you make more money then if you work your way up.

i guess you've never seen Beerfest. oh well

funny you should mention that, i've actually spent a night in jail for being drunk and riding a skateboard home.

I was detained for being drunk while operating a razor scooter, about 50 feet from my dorm. I didnt get in trouble. after 20 mins of deciding what to do, they took my scooter for the night and dropped me off
