Should I get this Jetta?

This kid is selling me his 99 wolfsburg edition VW Jetta (old body style) for $1500 and I cant decide if I should get it. The reason i cant decide is because it has a good amount of problems hence it being $1500. The exhaust is really load and needs a lot of work, the left door and side got hit and has a very noticable dent, and other things may need replacing like brake pads. I dont want to get stuck with a car with endless problems. Other than that stuff the car is really nice and clean. Its a stick so its a fun car.... Buy or dont buy???

mileage? 1500 for a 99 jetta doesn't sound too bad though. blue book it and find out how much it would cost to fix er up.

honestly, i wouldn't get it, unless it has less than 80k on it, and he took good care of the car. normally cars under $2000 won't last long, and need to be repaired a lot.

it has 95k miles, my dad can fix anything on a car but i dont want him to have to slave over my car

if everything worked it would be a 5500 dollar car, to fix the exhaust would be $150 and my dad can fix the body up...still bad idea?

have a tendency to be electrical nightmares, so keep some extra fuses in the glove compartment, but it should be a fun car at least, and you can beat on it

don't do it.

it really won't be worth it.

fixing cosmetics is a bitch and a half.

exhaust is not so bad, but still.

i would only play 500 for that car. seriously.

well right now the car is at my house because the kid who owns it got his license suspended anyways and my dad is going to give it a full expection tomorrow.. i dont see how 1500 is a steap price

i dont know the orices of things for VW's, but generally brakes, exasut and a new door shoudnt cost yo more then 600

i hope that it exploded for a good reason... hmm btw does anyone think a white jetta will be too gay? im getting a thule and stuff..

true

but once there is one major porblem, its the start of the car going down hill

for some reason, they go without problems for 100,000 miles, but after that, its like owning a kia all over again

the kid i might get it from bought it at 89k miles right after he got it all the problems came and he put 3k into it with new clutch new brake pads etc. so he got screwed

if u dont see how its a steep price, then whyd u even ask?

and if u know he got fucked over, then why do u wanna buy it?

I didnt read the thread but if no one has said it yet. Jetta's are for chicks. save your money and get something else.

bad news. if it has an auto trans, it will go. if it has a manual trans, chances are the reverse gear is chipped. either way it will need a new trans. it will also need a new ignition switch, a new ignition coil, the check engine light is probably on and will be abitch to fix the shit in order to get it off. unless you really like working on cars a jetta is kind of a pain in the ass. and unlike the rest of these senseless fucks i have actually owned a mark3 volkswagen. yes they last long, but you can really find a VW for 1500 with maybe higher miles but in better condition. and dont beat on it, the douche who said that doesnt know about vw transmissions. IM me if you have other questions, but i wouldnt mess with it if i were you.

if you are buying a used car, try and get one from the original owner, or a responsible person who had owned it for a while and can show you service records, not a high schooler who has had it for less than 10,000. i bought an 87 volvo for 500 from the original owner, shit is the best, most dependable car i have owned hands down. so there are good, cheap cars out there, but this one isnt it.

i know that the golf i was looking at had a chipped reverse gear and prevented me from buying it, but seriously if you buy a car for 1500 bones its not gunna last too long

you never know though. it could last for years and years. if i bought it i wouldnt fix anything cosmetic though.

i know exactly what you're saying, but just wait because the same exact thing will come again, don't worry. it's not necessary to have THAT EXACT jetta.

yea the auto trans im my 94 jetta just pretty much shit the bed and yea they take alot to kepp going

haha i so could...my dad pretty much fixed the exhaust problem (a $2 part was needed) the kid who owns it now has the cars history and everything on paper, ive been looking for a car on and off for a year and i havent seen anything that really popped out at me.. when i go in reverse the car makes a very fast repeating vrooom sound..anyone know what that is?

the reverse noise is a chipped reverse gear, something that is inevitable with these vws. it depends on how bad it is, does it pop out of gear? is it a really bad noise or just kind of like a dull wawawawawawa?

dont look at is as a $1500 car. look at it as a $5500 car (or however much you think it will cost to get it in good working order.

i wouldnt go for it. my ex gf's dad bought her a 99 vw beetle for $2000 off some lady who was selling it cheap because it wasnt in great shape. he knew it needed work and decided it would still be cheaper to fix it up than it would be to buy a newer car. long story short, they have dumped a good bit of cash into it over the past 3 years and have hated every year they've owned it. the problems just keep coming. they've been trying to sell it for a while and no one wants it.

it pops out of gear, i got the price down to 1000 but screw that im not getting a new transmission so it sucks to be the kid who owns this piece of shit.

nah dont fuck with jettas. i dont care who on here has them and says they are fast. fast relevant to what? the wolfsburg edition has a shitty turbo and not much else to offer. fuck jettas

your options are limited so i really dont think it sounds like too bad of an idea. the things wrong with it arent that serious either

new transmission=huge bitch/problem and i dont care about speed, after almost killing myself in a car crash thats the last thing that i care about.

yo man go on www.vwvortex.com and go to the classifieds if you want a volkswagen. or look in local classified sections in newspapers. like i said, if a car is well maintained, it will last a long time, and you CAN buy a nice volkswagen with higher miles but in nice condition for around 1500. you just have to look, and dont jump at the first car.

make sure the car has had major services when it has been needed like timing belt, water pump, regular oil changes, brakes, tires. if the front tires are bald, the person drove like shit. check the clutch, and like i sai dbuying from someone older who has kept service records and has owned the car for a while/since new is your best bet. my friend bought a jetta for 1500 with 180,000 miles on it, but it was all highway and now he sold it to our friend after delivering pizzas in it for a few years and his friend drives from connecticut to new hampshire in it regularly. it all depends on how the car was maintained before you. even if your dad can fix shit, if the car sucks its not worth it because he will be fixing mad shit.

and i know what im talking about, my dad has sold cars all his life, ive sold a few cars, and bought a few good/not so good vehicles.

my dad currently works at a dealership with his firnd and they make mad dough buying cars with lots of miles on it for their age, but like with highway miles the car isnt complete shit. my dad drives a 2000 outback with 210,000 miles on it, got it for cheap, and it is in perfect running condition.

if you are really interested in a car, it is worth it to bring it to a mechanic for that kind of car and spend the 30 bucks to have him inspect it. if the seller wont let you do that, then dont buy the car.

Yea dude, old V-dubs are a little bit sketched, my buddy has a new one and he's pretty dissapointed about it, I'd check www.craigslist.org and look around your area, defetnly dont want a first car to be a fixeruper, I did that by buying a 1980 trans am pace car, got it going..but, you'll save tons of heartache by going with a yoter, or soob or mits
