Shotgun

My uncle's giving me a shotgun this weekend (12 gauge I beleive). I've never shot a gun before but my buddies wana take me hunting this fall. What do you hunt with a shotgun?

my dads friend the other day came over with a fifty cal. sniper rifle its got like a four mile range and a four thousand dollar scope for those who watch myth busters its the same one they use in one of the episodes

like quail and turkey? Can I shoot deer at all, or is that a rifle thing.

I'm not even sure I can get myself to shoot an animal, but just in case, it'd be nice to know.

ha ha ha if you want to eat little bb's out of the meat or if you wanna use a slug and just eat like half the deer.

haha yeah no kidding.

haven't you ever seen the that 70s show episode where eric shoots the deer with buckshot? not a good idea.

wildebeest. I hear they're hard to sneak up on though. Actually, your chances of hunting a wildebeest are probably about as good as you getting a deer with a 12 gauge.

it is illegal due to its inefficency (sp?) if you shoot a deer with a spread its not gonna die. if you shoot it again, its still probably not gonna die. hence the illegality.

i think buck shot is just like shit tht flys out to scare off people and not really.

wikipedia: Buckshot is used for hunting larger game, such as deer (hence derivation of the name), and also in riot shotguns and combat shotguns

for defensive, police, and military use. Buckshot is also categorized

by number, with smaller numbers being larger shot. It is called either

"buckshot" or just "buck", such as "triple-ought buck" or "number 4

buck".

wow... "now that I have my gun... what do I do with it?"

personally you don't seem to be very educated in the matter, and therefore I disagree with you even deciding to own a gun before you even know anything about it.

But a shotgun in your most versatile firearm, as far as hunting goes at least. You can hunt anything and everything from small game (field birds, rabbits etc.) to waterfowl to deer.

You can buy differnt shells that reflect what you are hunting. For instance, using a 12 gauge for small game I would normally use a 2 3/4 inch shell with #8 shot. But for geese I would use a 3 1/2 inch magnum (providing you gun can hold this shell) with BBB shot. For deer you would use a slug, or pumpkin ball.

Shot sizes from smallest to biggest are as follows:

#10, #8, #6, #4, #2, BB, BBB, T, then you start getting up into buckshot.

Some guns also have modifiable "chokes" you can use to change the spread pattern of the shot.

"loose" - very wide choke

"modified" - wide choke

"full" - tighter pattern

"extra full" - very tight shot pattern (normally used for turkey)

Take a hunter's instructional safety course. And learn what the hell you are doing so you're not another member of idiot america that has a gun because "it's his right to own one", and needs to find something to do with it.

Don't worry, I'm taking a safety course before I actually shoot it, but he's giving it to me for my birthday, so I figured I'd take it, as it'd be rude to say 'ohh sorry but I don't want your present'.

dude i agree with grubix up there, you do not what to just play around with a gun. Take a course, go hunting with experienced hunters that know firearms.

yeah thats cool, hunting is a past time of mine. It just pisses me off when I see people that don't know what the hell they are doing. They end up getting hurt or not being an ethical hunter. I don't mean to shun you away from it. Just take you time and learn. If your family hunts, I'm sure you'll be fine.

It's just a little differnt for me. My father and grandfather had me hunting at age 12.

Ya, I gotcha. I'm taking a course sep 12.

My family doesn't hunt, but my uncles do and my friends/their dad's do so I have plenty of people do go with. I was just curious on what a shotgun is used for.

I got it today and my dad has it for now; It's a Noble D60 16 gauge. Anybody ever heard of Noble? I haven't and not much on google about noble guns. It's in beautiful condition.

haha, well about that; I'm not planning on shooting it until I get through the hunter safety course (with the exception of some minimal skeet with my dad if he feels like using the gun)

HELL WHO NEEDS SAFETY? Just look at my Uncle John he didn't take no safety class and he learned how to shoot a shotgun. Missing an eye and an arm, but hey what don't kill ya makes ya stronger.

Plan on birds, and basically the key is to follow their flight with the gun and shoot when you get them lined up with the bead. Be prepared for some kickback.

buck shot is a bunch of bigger bbs that you can use for hunting deer, but if you do end up hunting deer, i would recommend using a slug, or saving some money and buying a riflem 7mm-08 what i use, works great

no you hunt deer with slugs, and in some states it is illegal to hunt deer with a rirfle because the bullets travel too far. It works really well actually. I would suggest going to a gun club and practice shooting sporting clays or trap before you just go hunting, so you can learn the proper techinque, how to and a gun, and get more accurate.

another thing that really fun, is basically shotgun golf, you go to 9 or 18 "holes" and shoot skeet or trap at all 18 stations

here in michigan there is a horizontal line across the state. below the line we hunt with 12 guage shot guns and slugs for deer and above the line, rifles. the reason is how populated the area is, with distance the projectile travels.

You can hunt deer with a shotgun, it just depends on what state you live in. And the best load to use when using a shotgun to hunt a deer is a slug. It's basically a big bullut, usually about 1oz. of lead. Not exactly the most accurate thing but out to 50 yards you can easily hit what you're aiming at. And it makes a BIG hole. But to answer your question, you can hunt anything with a shotgun. It is easily the most versitle firearm you can own. I hunt birds and deer using my 12 gauge.

The action on my rem 870 pump broke at the range today. So I have to get that fixed by fucking gun deer season starts. Where I live in wisconsin, you can only hunt with a shotgun, but if you go up north you can use a rifle or a shotgun or a handgun during gun season. So I'm thinking bout buying a .308 or .220 NATO AR-15, and just put a 5 round clip in it so its legal.

you can buy a 50 cal revolver for about a grand

It's a shotgun. Load it up and kill shit. Repeat. Why do you need to take a course before you shoot it? Just dont point it at anyone...
