Shortening headphone cables

Anyone know if you can shorten the cords on headphones? All good headphones come with like 6' cables and its a pain. Especially when the bundle of cord is bigger than my actual mp3 player.

Do you know of any sites that explain how to do it?

ive been to a few electronics type stores and none of them say u can do it. but it seems to me that it can be done...i mean, why not??

Ive seen a guy that did it, but it was a pretty ghetto set up!

I would want to do it properly, especially so it was still water resistant.

take a set of speaker wire and buy a jack, or pirate it off an old set of headphones. cut the wire to the length you need, solder the wire to each connection of the jack, wrap in electrical tape and shrink it with a hair dryer

dissasemble the head phones. use you soldering iron to unattach the existing wire from the speakers and then solder the new wire to the connections

voila

an easier way of ^^guys^^ post.

cut a chunk out of the middle of the cord(2 different cuts if i didnt explain it well enough)

strip part of the covering so you can get at the wires.

saulder the wire back together and electric tape the fuck ass shit out of it

didn't work? If all the cords are connected properly then it should work, yeh the cut the center section out is much easier, but I was gving him an alternative that would preserve the existing cord incase he isn't so electronically inclined

they make these wire connectors for really cheap. Theyre just a rubber tube with metal in the middle. cut out as much as you want then put them in the tubes. Crimp the tubes and melt the rubber with a lighter. Theres even instructions on the box.

unless they're sony headphones, which are wrapped really tight into the one wire's size (i think). cause my sony's are one wire, instead of the dual wire setup. i'm sure there's 2 wires on the inside of the cable...... but it's one strand on the outside.

Or unless its a digital cable for an MD that isn't wire, but perhaps fibre optic, then you have hooped your set. If you want to maintain the integrity of your sound quality, just wrap the cable up in an elastic like someone else mentioned.

yah unless you have a huge pair of dj headphones with a super thick cord rubber banding should work fine

cut them, get some wire connectors, crimp the wire connectors on with crimpers. heat shrink them, or use electrical tape

Or you could just daisy-chain the cable (just lots and lots of overhand knots). I did that and made my 6 foot cable only a couple feet long.
