Shooting in winter for complete n00b

I bought a DSLR purely for skiing, so I want to make sure I don't do anything to blow it up. So my question is, what precautions do you guys take when going out and taking pics on the mountain? Obviously, extreme temperature changes will cause condensation, so I plan on taking pictures the first half of the day, putting my camera in my car, and then continue to ski.

Other than that, what do you guys do? Also, how safe is it to keep my camera strapped around my neck and zipped up under my jacket? I don't want to have to pack and unpack my camera every 500 ft. With my camera around my neck, I will be simply going down the mountain - no fucking around.

Thanks.

well if your not going to be eating shit during the time your shooting, then you should be fine.

if you have a case for your camera you could prob just stick it in there and carry it. unless your poles would get in the way.

Dude I carry a HPX170 and a Nikon D5000 on me the entire day even when it's snowing and it's fine. Just don't be a dumbass and crash or let snow accumulate in cracks or the screen(s)/lens. Otherwise, a DSLR is fine temperature wise and it wont get too much condensation inside it. Solid-state cameras are great for winter.

Well you need to watch out for a couple things:

One your skiing and having an expensive camera on you so you need to watch yourself. I skied with my camera around my neck once and fell, that sucked... Its worth your time and money to get a good backpack to protect your camera. If I am getting on my skis, I put the camera in the pack...it's a pain but for me its worth it.

I just ski around with it in my hand with the strap around my neck generally. Just don't forget that it is there and if you fall keep it safe. You should be able to ski down a run without falling over so I don't see why it would be necessary to pack it up every run. If not please enroll in ski school.

Just don't fall, and like vinny said, if you can't ski down a run without falling you should take some lessons.

Thanks for the replies. I'll only be shooting in the trees, so I'll be extra careful.

Ski school might be an option, though. Thanks tits.

I'll ski with it in my jacket, around my neck but like you said condensation will accumulate on the lens so just be prepared to wait a bit for the lens to air out once you pull it out of your jacket. i cant tell you how many times I went to try and take a photo with a foggy lens

i want this so bad the mountainsmith descent at

epic awesome, might need to be bigger to fit around my gnar-nasty 2xl saga lol, jk. but bigger for sure would help

as it was outside your coat and case? thats just silly mr.

im saying the warm temperatures inside your layering and the cold outdoor temperatures could do havoc

It scares the crap out of me when I´, out shooting with my XHA1 and it´s snowing. I always use this protective plastic thingy to keep it dry while shooting

never walk into/out of a lodge with your cam exposed, its just too big of a temp change. Get a bag or case for your cam so the temp changes slowly to avoid condensation

Haha, That looks like a baby holder, like what the dude had in The Hangover... Might be convenient, but seems like it would get in the way while shooting.
