Shoes indoors?

One thing that never seizes to amazes me is that it seems to be the norm in the US to NOT take of your shoes when you are indoors. Why is that you do not do it?

I mean, the floors obviously gets dirty, especially since most floors in the US ( at least from what I have experienced) are carpet and not wooden. And then I can imagine the feet getting very sweaty from wearing shoes all day. For me it is a relief to take of my shoes everyday when I get home.

Please, enlighten me.

I would say that that isn't the norm. We just don't put on our shoes in the morning and leave them on all day. Usually people take off their shoes when they come home, unless they're visiting someone's house or something.

its typically considered rude to ask someone to take their shoes off, especially if you have invited them over and it is a semi-formal or formal event. dresses/nice outfits look awkward if you walk around barefoot...

i think we in europe think that you don't take off your shoes because of all the TV series we get from you americans. I don't know why, but the actors never take their shoes of on the shows.

Every time i've been in the states i've been taking my shoes off when i go inside.

I take my shoes off when I'm home or when I'm at someone elses house, always. When I'm in my res room, I usually leave them on cause I don't spend much time in there and tehre isn't anywhere to walk because it is 8'x12' and my bike, clothes, ski equipment and miscellaneous stuff is on one side, with "bed" and desk on teh otehr side.

Haha my friends always make fun of me for keeping my shoes on in the house. I just have this weird thing about socks, i hate looking at them on my feet. Plus my shoes are comfy.

uphere in canukistan i always take my shoes off at other peoples places. i find it so rude when you dont.

i usually take my shoes off, unless it's not a house that I'm down to walk around in with just my socks...

if im going to a friends house i usually wait and see what they do (if they remove shoes so do i) but for the most part i prefer to keep them on. especially at parties- it just makes me feel secure in case i have to run from anything

same here. around my house i usually wear my slippers. other peoples houses i go barefoot. i really dont like whereing shoes in houses

ive never really thought about it that much if they are on they are on... if i feel like kicking them off i will do so...

same. my friends give me shit about it but I cant seem to bring myself to take off my shoes.

my friend always wears his shoes in his house.

i do it in summer sometimes, but in winter time, with the snow on all = muddy shoes.

i hate taking off my shoes

if i see shoes by the door, ill ask whoevers house is it if i should take them off, if they say yes, i will

otherwise, they dont come off

House:

Kids should always take off shoes

Teens/Young Adults should take of their shoes for the most part unless it is a more formal event

Adults do not take off their shoes

I take off my shoes when I go into my house.

I don't take off my shoes when I go into my school.

I don't take off my shoes when I go to a party (unless house party, like for superbowl or new years), or a formal event, or something along those lines.

I always wear my shoes in my house, but only because we have wood floors and a central heating wood stove, so the floors are always cold.

dont compare anything you see on TV to real American life(for the most part) ......................... Hollywood has an agenda a mile long

well, i used to always take them off. now i leave them on because my house is fucking cold, and my feet freeze without them.

yeah you did. i wasn't directing it to you, just merely stating that there is no way people are allowed to take off shoes in school?

right that's usually what i do, and what my friends try to do at my house. but if they know me well they know my mom will just tell them to keep them on cos she doesn't care. ha
