Shitty Landlords

Tell your best story about a shitty landlord.

I'm currently in the middle of mine right now. The boiler has been broken since a week before Halloween and they aren't scheduled to begin installing a new one until this Thursday (It takes 2.5 days to install according to landlord).

The forecast for the rest of the week is as follows:

Monday: High 65F/Low 15F (Below 30 since 11 am)

Tuesday: High 23F/Low 11F

Wednesday: High 15F/Low 5F

Thursday: High 25F/ Low 19F

Friday: High 32F/Low 10F

The best part is that he brought over 2 small space heaters to "keep the pipes from freezing", but refuses to pay or split the energy costs from running them 24/7 (Wouldn't be so bad but I'm a grad student on a slim budget).

I lived above a restaurant for a bit, not bad at all since the place had amazing sound insulation in the floor, but about 3 weeks before I was moving out they installed a huge industrial air conditioner on the roof right above my bedroom. Turns out you can barely hold a normal conversation with it going, thank god I was leaving. I left some hidden stickynotes around telling future tenants about it that hopefully the landlord didn't find, since it would really suck to not know about it since he'd have it turned off during showings then sign a lease and be stuck with it.

Let me tell you about shitty tenants ....

My tenant just OD'd on Heroin .. but his girl friend says it was the GHB that put him over the edge. The paramedics say the house was a disaster ...and the neighbors figure he is dealing drugs (or just buying the, frequently) but be pays the rent...so what do you do.

Your land lord does suck. I would have given you a brake on the rent. It's cheaper to give you a deal that it would be have you move out, clean the place and then find another tenant. minimum 1 month without rental income and $100 cleaning fee.... how is the rental market? maybe just tell him you found a place with heat, that is available today. By not having proper heat, it's likely your rental agreement would be void... I think a tenancy board would rule in your favor.

this. tell him you're moving out and maybe he'll get his shit together.

unless you signed a shitty lease/contract

Holy shit, that's a shitty tenant. I always wondered what the landlords point of view was on a tenant like that was. As far as moving goes...'m in a college town, so the rental market isn't great + I don't have time to deal with a move as a grad student. Once the new boiler is in, I'll be a happy camper, I just needed to vent a little.

One of my tenants killed himself and you find out you have to clean up everything... yea, everything. Don't worry, it wasn't because I was a shitty landlord, it was because he was gay and doing a shit ton of drugs to drown out his depression. Why does being gay matter? You try growing up as a gay man in a Mormon-infested environment in a small town down south where your family eventually excommunicates you.

That's not a joke. Mormons can really sucks and aside from heavy drug use being always late on the rent and hanging with sketchy people, he was a chill dude. Aside from Mormons, I think Utah has the highest population of insane/shitty landlords. There should be some good ones popping up.

My last place was super sketchy basement suite (my co-workers informed me it was once known as 'the crackhouse' after I moved in), but I needed a place asap and it was cheap. I made sure I didn't have to sign a lease (told them I'm a social worker and didn't want to live with any clients). Gave my one month notice the day I moved in (a couple of days before the first of the month, so in reality, more than a month's notice).

While I was there, the shower head fell off and an electrical outlet exploded. Cigarette burns on the ceiling and smoke stains on the walls/ceilings. Absolutely disgusting.

Kept the place clean and left it cleaner than when I moved in (they did a couple of 'renos' before I moved in, but didn't clean up after themselves, however they still kept half my damage deposit, saying they needed to have the place 'professionally cleaned'. Sucks knowing I'm got swindled, but not worth the fight for a couple hundred bucks.

My landlord would definitely be considered "shitty" by landlord standards but I would also probably be called a "shitty" tenant so it works out.

He pretty much lets my housemates and I do whatever we want with the place, whenever we want, which is sick! Also doesnt care at all about us paying rent on time, just general neglect stuff like that. but on the downside he doesnt do anything that we ask of him

Forgot to mention my current landlord is definitely making up for the last one. A super chill Hungarian dude. Fixes stuff when it's needed and I have freedom to do pretty much whatever I want (painting, fixing stuff, etc). He even let me borrow one of his vehicles for almost a month when mine was in the shop.

My landlord allows me to grow hella weed as long as the rent is in its chill. Its all for medical purposes but he hasn't even asked if its legal or not. He sees the plants and just ignores them even though there are 30+ of them budding right in front of him haha. The guy is so chill its amazing.
