Shin splints

mine are getting bad and they fucking hurt. besides ice any recommendations as far as stretching or other excersises to help eliminate them? any runners here?

do calf raises. stand on a step on ur toes then just go up and down on ur tippy toes. thats what i do and it helps a bit , and also strengthens ur calves

shin splits are a bitch...i got them a lot this season but eventually they went away

yeah, do calf raises. this works even better if you do it on a step (so that your heels go above and below your toes) so that you get both full flexion and extention of the joint, and will stretch the muscle groups at the front and back of your leg.

^ yah ibuprofen works goood too, I rocked that shit hard this year. Or try gettin booster straps, there like 50 bucks and I hear they work pretty good

how much longer do you have left in your season because if your going to be running right through till the fall id suggest rest. Other wise it just wont get better and youll be stuck with the pain till then.

If rest isnt an option Id suggest coussioned(sp?) insoles. They did wonders for my shin splints last summer and saved my rugby season.

I'm 100% positive if you had shin splints and you ran through it and it went away it wasn't shin splints.

From my knowledge, if you have this type of pain from just starting to run, its cause your muscles are weak. Like someone said above, strengthen your calf muscles...ecentric excersizes help...that is what one kid said, get on your tippie toes, and go down slowly...use your good leg to get on your tippie toe. also write the alphabet while your doing nothing like watching tv or in the shower.

This so called shin splint very common for someone who has just started their training after a long break.

Trust me, its not a shin splint.

Also someone posted about heat...its good to heat, but only befor your run to loosen up the muscles...than ice after....i would just stick to iceing, and get it in a cold whirl pool, not ice blocks...that way more area of your leg gets cooled.

If you want more info on this, im the man to come to...i've run many miles.

If you do truley have shin splints take a good two weeks off...also, get new shoes...shoes only last 500-600 miles. keep a log, and only run in your running shoes...dont just walk around in them...this way you know how much life you have in your shoes.

RICE is the best help for you...rest, ice, compression, elevation

i re-read my post...when i said heat befor than ice, i ment heat befor you run, than ice after you run...but i never did the heat thing

also, what type of surface are you running on most of the time? get off the roads and track and run on some grass...its softer.

I HATE shin splints. I usually just ice mine for about an hour and then they usually go away for a while

 
Best thing to help shin splints is to stop running.

That's likely not an option I'm assuming but try to avoid running on hard surfaces like pavement. If you can run on grass.

Take a few days off, you need to let that shit heal up. If you have a competition coming up you will be much faster without shin splints that you will if you just try to tough it out through the training.

As for me I pulled my groin, what should I do?
