Shifties in Spins

Anyone know of a good progression that I can take to learn how to do a shifty in the middle of a 3,5,7,etc.? I can't seem to figure it out and I constantly end up not getting my rotations around and wrecking pretty hard. I feel like this will also help learn tons of new grabs and help on bigger jumps..... Any Tips?

Thanks in advance

really get comfortable on your spins and spin on different size jumps, just work on being Abe to pull the spin around after the shiftey

very constructive tip

"how to shifty with spins ?"

"work on being able to do shifties with spins"

Have you ever considered a coaching job with the national freestyle team ?

I'm just that good, but I didn't say work on being able to spin with shifteys lol

Back in the days when I skied park I put a decent amount of work into trying to learn this. It’s hard because you are kind of deliberately fucking up the fluidity of your rotation so you have to be confident in your balance in the air and your ability to spot landings. My advice would be to get shifty 180s down in your sleep. Then when you move to 360s it is a very similar motion but your upper body is continuing instead of stalling. It’s almost like your skis are doing a straight air while your body turns down to rotate and then your legs are kind of drug along once your range of motion is maxed out. All other things being equal throwing a shifty into a rotation is almost a guarantee to under rotate, so you almost need to try to do a 450 to get it solidly, it’s almost smoother to get it that way too then to have to unwind to land.

Two pointers that someone told me when I was learning this that helped a lot....

1. When first learning shifties and spins do the shifty later in your rotation. Think about it with a shifty 3. It's WAY harder to shifty right away at the first 90 and then wrap a full 270 before you have to land than it is to basically do a 270 spin and as you're almost fully forward again do a little shifty before you land. As you get more comfortable, shifty when you're at 180, then further and further. Eventually you'll have it dialed where you want it.

2. Keep the head looking the way that you want to go and let the feet and legs do the shifty. That way the bulk of your weight and momentum will finish the spin.

Good luck!

yes, you practically did. "work on being able to pull the spin around after the shiftey"

*shifty

smh

ok let me edit this basically just have good air control and good shifteys

Gotta make sure the spin is completely set before you shifty. Ur probs doing it too early. Its a lot easier on bigger jumps cuz its easier to fully set the spin, then grab/shifty

anyone got a good video showing what the body and hands to? I have tried to do shifty 3s off flat(probably not a good way to try) and when I try to swing my arms to counter-rotate it seems like I just spin faster in the direction I set the spin.

I would say arms/hands out to your sides, far away from your body (making your upper body big) while skis fairly tight together, creating counter rotation between upper and lower body.

Your body moves in 2 parts. Upper and lower. Your lower body almost always follows your upper body. There have been many good tips previously stated here. When you set or pop your spin off the jump, your upper body should be leading the rotation. As you get to 180, let your skis hang back while your upper body keeps rotating. As you then spot your landing, pull your skis around to set you down. Keep in mind, the bigger the jump you hji the easier this trick will; be to feel and do. Once you get a 360 shifty down (think of it as 180 shifty to 180), move onto 540 and think of that as 360 shifty to 180. Beyond that it depends on what you're doing. I personally hate straight 7's, but it seems to me a 7 with shifty would most likely be 3 shifty to 3, but could be done 5 shifty 1 as well. Maybe post some good clear shots of you doing some of them and it would be really easy to talk about your technique specifically.

Btw so cool you're focusing on these tricks. They're really fun, hope you enjoy yourself homie!

thanks dude, this was super helpful actually!!!

Whenever I try to do a shifty 3 or 5, I pretend like I’m gonna overshifty 1 at first. So I throw my legs around to 180 real fast and let my upper body come around. If I throw it hard enough I’ll let myself come around to 5

lol that doesn't sound like a very controlled movement.

Master shifty first, master 3s as well.

then start by throwing a shifty 1 , pop shifty right or left and spin in direction your skis are moving, keep your core disengaged in the first half of shifty and engage in second half of shifty, do the same with a 3.

Now time to throw a shifty mid 3, basically same as above but requires you to have mastered disengaging your core and re engaging.

What I think is real cool is a 1 shifty back to 0 which would be step 3 if ya get that far.
