shawshank as movie for people who don't like to be challenged. its a good story and its as simple as that. there really isn't anything thats particularly innovative or origninal about the film, it doesn't break any kind of ground. pulp fiction is highly creative, highly original, extremely important in terms of its influence, superbly written, directed and cast.

pulp fiction wins this hands down, seriously this isn't debatable.

you should be so lucky as to be reading this.

pulp fiction is far above shawshank, shawshank is a great movie don't get me wrong as was said above, but pulp fiction is far more entertaining and just better all round

Shawshank. If I wanna be challenged then I go to my University classes. If I wanna be entertained I watch a movie. Pulp fiction doesn't even come close.

 
i disagree that there isn't anythiong innovative about shawshank. i mean, the guy is in prison for a murder that he doesn't commit. he is raped lots. he has no chance of probation. and he is living the way he would if he had not a care in the world. its an amazing minframe that the movie shows us. Shawshank redmeption is way better than pulp fiction. any day of the week.

there's nothing challenging about pulp fiction you dumbfucks, it's just an all around more well done and creative movie. like was said above, shawshank is a great story with good acting, but pulp fiction is a mix of all the important aspects of film making done extremely well.

JD is right about neither of them being the best. Shawshank is surley a great movie. Makes you feel good. And for some reason the way it was put togehter is just kinda beautiful. And Pulp is great too.

Oh contrar, fuck that word, But Alpinecowboy, when you say there is nothing innovative or anything to shawshank redemption i hope you are joking. Its one of the most creative and coolest films out there, we had to study it in english once and right essays on the film making/camera shots and plot etc, and it was a whole lot different and new once you've watched it as a learning experience, its fucken awesome all round, hands down shawshank.

okay tell me whats innovative about it? listen i'm not talking out of my ass here, i know about film. ask anyone in the indie scene, the hollywood scene, the experimental scene and all them will tell you that pulp fiction is a better film and more importantly a far more significant film. the influence it has played and will continue to play on present and upcoming filmmakers is extaordinary. aspiring filmmakers love pulp fiction and taxi driver, kids who like to be entertained like movies like shawshank redemption and die hard. this really isn't something you can argue, shawshank is a 4.5 star movie, pulp fiction is a 5 star movie, theres a reason for that.

as far as a movie goes, pulp fiction is more innovative. i dont know if that means that it's a better movie, it's all personal preference. as far as stories go, i'd say shawshank is much better. everyone should go get that novella. it's by stephen king

SHAWSHANK, no challenage in shawshank? The movie asks you whether you are more of a Brooks character or Red. You ask yourself would you give up hope after 30+ in prison.

 
good point hellmut. to the other guy: tarantino does not use shock value to ensure the quality of his movies, he simply has a particular obsession for the grittier side of life - and that comes from watching so much film noir. are you going to make the same argument about hitchcock? what about kubrick? both of them detail shocking events within their film framework, but they do not 'use' shock value as some cheap means to entice positive reviews by film critics. the kind of shitty shock value you're talking about can be found in bullshit worthless films like the butterfly affect.

shawshank was an incredible story, and was a pleasing ending for the audience, the victory of hope and the previously heavily burdened. The acting, casting and script transfer was excellent, almost exactly the same as the book. Pulp Fiction was awesome in the acting and the interesting presentation and filmography, as well as having a crazy array of actors.

^not really, i don't think its innovative in the slightest to show how different people deal with different situations, welcome to every movie ever made. i wouldn't say full metal jacket is innovative because it shows how war affected each character.
