Ok ok, so i just saw the schick quattro (4 bladed face cutting goodness), and the guy using it was doing a downstroke. From the past 4 years of experience, ive found that only an UP stroke works, but the guy on the commercial uses the DOWN stroke. Anyone find that a down stroke will leave you baby soft?

i use the quattro, and sometimes with downstrokes its all soft, but not to the extent of upstrokes. its not bad, but its all about up

 
Oh thats even worse! I only shave like twice a week and let it grow out cuz im far too lazy to actually run a piece of metal down my face. So at fear of looking like a 'seasonal migrant worker' i hit up the electric for under my nose. It doesnt get nearly the closeness of a blade, lip still stays kinda fuzzy when oyou feel it with my bottom lip.

If you only shave twice a week you don't need to worry about downstroke or upstroke. You've just got peach fuzz and it's not going to make a difference either way. Alot of guys with real beards only shave downstroke because upstroke causes way to much irritation. Depends on how sensitive your skin is.

I use those shitty disposable razors...you know the ones with 2 blades? Ya, I need about three passovers to get everything, and I get cut alot. I wish razors werent so damn expensive. Not as bad as tampons, tho.

haha... I shave whenever I feel like it (once a week...sometimes even 3 times) and I don't give a shit if I have a 2nd day beard...who gives a shit?

I tried to upstroke yesterday. HOLY SHIT that was a bad idea. My soft, smooth, baby-face skin was ravaged by the horrible upstroke. After this failed experiment I will continue to downstroke. I would MUCH rather have 5 o'clock shadow than herpes-like razor burn. I use the Mach 3 Turbo.

up and down, razor burn sucks for the first couple times but it goes away after that...works way better

I downstroke then upstroke...best way to do it with minimal irritation (at least for me at least) Ive found is:

I shower, and the hot water and steam and shit makes your face good to shave. I dunno exactly what it does, but the heat and steam soften up some shit, and makes for a better shave. halfway through my shower I used to get outta the shower, shave, and get back in and finish my shower, but I bought a mirror with a suction cup so I can keep it lite and shave in the shower....when you're done shaving splash it with cold water to close up the pores (Maxim magazines words, not mine, but its true). Then use neutrogena for men face lotion when you're done. no more razor burn. works for me, could be different for everyone. but the shower/shave/shower is pretty money.

I used to upstroke cause a downstroke wouldnt shave my hair, but upstorkes just hurt to much so i invested in a good electric razor and havnt looked back.

mach 3 turbo dominates over the quattro, more blades is not better. Gotta shave with the grain, cant go against the grain or you get cut up.

I use a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo, and I don't use shaving cream. I use a downstroke to get the hairs as short as possible that way, and then upstroke it to get it as smooth as possible. Works like a charm.

^ man, I can't see how you can possibly shave without using shaving cream when using a straight razor. I tried that once and I got so cut and burnt . It was bad.

If you don't need shaving cream, you don't have any real facial hair, and you should probably finish puberty before posting here. The only right way to do it according to queer eye for the straight guy is to lather up with shaving cream, ONLY USE DOWNSTROKES, then relather and shave with downstrokes again. No irritation, and you're completely smooth.

i always just do downstrokes, tried upstrokes but didnt care to get that close. now i got an electric for christmas though so no more razor
