Shaun White withdraws from slopestyle

Funny that NBC is still hyping Snowboard Slope featuring Shaun White. I keep hearing the commercials. I guess they haven't gotten the memo yet.

I just looked at his facebook post that he was withdrawing and 95% of the comments were people were suporting him and telling him he made a good decision.. Wtf how are people ok with this?

Big fan of this quote from the NY Times, "The possibility of hurting himself in an event he dominated for years, and in which he has regained enough of his form to make himself a gold medal contender, was too great to risk the near-certainty of winning a third consecutive gold medal in the Olympic halfpipe."

Near-certainty.

How did he get hurt? One article says on a jump takeoff (doubtful) One says on the drop in (doesn't say anything about a rail)

Did he fucking fall off the side of the drop in?

SOMEONE PLEASE CLARIFY:

The USA was sending only three male snowboarders for slopestyle (Shaun, Chas, and Sage). Countries can send up to four max athletes per event, limited by total team members for a discipline and past event results. I don't imagine US men's snowboarding not having the results to send four people. That means that the US has already filled their quota of male snowboard athletes through other events. If that is the case, regardless of Shaun pulling out of one event, the US does not have quota to send additional athletes. An athlete would have to pull out entirely to allow a replacement.

I hate Shaun just as much as the next but I can't say with certainty that the timing of his decision has an impact on whether or not someone else gets to go. +K to anyone to can provide some facts.

If you don't know what I am talking about see that olympic qualification thread.

Shaun has no slope game at all so its really no suprise. he would get his ass handed to him by everyone in the field right now.

You're absolutely right. Each country has a quota of competitors per gender per discipline. So the US is allowed to take x number of male snowboarders to cover halfpiple, slopestyle AND boardercross. If one of those competitors chooses to enter more than one of those particular events that's just a bonus as far as medal chances go, but Captain Dickhead's withdrawl from slope doesn't mean the US can put another boarder in his place.

Up in here on Canada's national news :

"Canadians still believe Shaun White bailed out because he knew he wouldn't win"

Whouuuuuuuuu

Agree with Shaun White! He has a point anyway. Look at him, he's been snowboarding all his life, but didn't have any serious injuries so far. It's because, he's taking care of himself, he knows his limitations and ability. He is a kind of good exemplary athlete. You don't need to act like proud-stomach every single moment. Some athletes were very conceited and arrogant, but the truth is, they're fucking pussy inside. What if the next accident would not just brake collarbone, and will hit directly to the neck? Let's also put in mind that those challengers doesn't have elastic bodies. It's just easy for the viewers to comment, 'coz we're not the one's whos risking lives. Why not try to put yourself in their shoes, stop talking and try to sympathize instead!

Well that would be a biased place to look. It's his fans who follow him on facebook so they would support him no matter what.

You are correct, thanks for the clarification. That still leaves me wondering whether the US had any additional quota to send a rider after Shaun pulled out of slopestyle.

I want to say they are supporting him because he's been dedicating his life to half pipe longer and harder than any other pipe snowboarder. Unfortunately, he probably paid all those people to leave supporting comments.

shaun white is partially to blame, the people who are most to blame are the retards who put him on the slopestyle team in the first place. they should be fired. everyone knows the flying tardmato can barely 50 a rail, how the fuck could he win in a slopestyle event? he would have looked like a jabroni competing against the world's best snowboarders who can actually hit rails

To my understanding he pulled out yesterday morning, the snowboard slope qualifiers were last night around midnight EST, so there just wasn't any time to get another rider to Sochi in time to make qualifiers.

He owes an apology to who he took the spot from. Taking two spots to compete for two events is a large undertaking. He really should have deliberated and considered the possible outcomes before taking the slope spot from another contender, a contender which would've only improved the USAs chance of winning a gold. He made a poor call.

no offence but if you're talking about taking home the gold, all the usa atheletes who are allready there have no chance, so dont need to bring another one who has even less of a chance. I do agree that living the olympic experience must be fucking cool, and to be so close to ge there, and have Shawn white take that spot, and then he bails, i'd be mad pissed

Right, I understand that, but if the US has already filled their quota (I can't imagine why they wouldn't have), an athlete would have had to drop out entirely. With Shaun still being in pipe there isn't an open quota to replace him.

they all have legitimate excuses to hate on shaun. McMorris is competing with a broken rib and what pissed me off the most is the media saying oh now everyone else in the field has a chance of winning gold, no shaun was never even going to medal in slopestyle

well it's not looking good for them. None qualified directly to the finals with the best being in 12th after qualification.

they really aren't medal contenders compared to the top riders. I mean they COULD medal, but the top 5 riders would have to all make mistakes.

Chas should have qualified though, his run was perfect. Jamie shouldn't have outscored him. I'm super upset at Sage's score. Honestly though, scoring is a joke. Mark got fucked too.

Skiing's poster boy: Skis for two months on torn ACL in valiant effort to reach olympics, everyone loves him despite nearly missing out.

Snowboarding's poster boy: Coasts to olympic team, makes up excuses as to why he wont compete because he realizes he wont win.

...............................

Stay gnar my skiing bretheren.

The downfall of both sports - People who compare them in an antagonist fashion. The sports share more similarity than difference, we should all be on the same team. However, let's exclude ski bladers, they can fend for themselves.
