Shaun White withdraws from slopestyle

really? you're not a fan of shawn white? because it sounds like your choking on his cock right now.

He's completely at fault, this is the olympics, did he expect the jumps to be small? He took the spot of another person, which is so selfish it's stupid

Hardly. Let's play with these a little bit.

Bode Miller

"Hey I used to be a pretty good Skicross racer, and I want to make the Olympic team in addition to Slalom, GS, and DH"

Trains, Wins races, qualifies for a spot on the Olympic team

Gets to Sochi

Hurts himself practicing

"Well, that sucked, I probably don't have a real good shot at getting a gold here now that this is bothering me, mentally and physically. And I really don't want to fuck up my other events, in which I have a really good chance of winning, So I'm going to play it safe here"

Drops Skicross to focus on his Main Races.

I just don't see anything wrong here...

What's wrong with wanting to play it safe in order to win?

Kyle Mack is his replacement, and if you haven't seen Kyle Mack shred, then search him up. He's fucking hardcore as shit, he's got 2 different axis triples (Trip Front Rodeo 14 and Back Triple cork 14), the only other is Billy Morgan (Back Triple Rodeo 12 and Back triple cork 14, plus Cab Triple Under 12)The time is now 12:38 on the East coast of America.

There is still time for Kyle to get there and still put up a fight

Seriously, Kyle needs to get sent out there, he's got a big bag of tricks and destroys some nations whole arsenal of slope riders

Idunno how many of you actually follow snowboarding, but this is pretty standard as shaun white isn't a huge star at slopestyle; he didn't even make finals in the 2011 at the x games for slopestyle.

dude. he will be the first man to win gold at the same event on 3 different olympics if he gets gold in pipe.im sure he wanted to do the slope but(t) fuck, just not worth it. and I also do not think it makes USA look bad that shaun decided to not do slope. do you really think it does?

Its not fair to the other athletes that are put in 110% effort to try to qualify for slope, and missed it because Shaun qualified. Shaun gets to Sochi, see the course, falls once, and says "fuck it, I cant win, might as well try to win pipe." Its just bullshit, if he doesn't want to put in some effort to try to win slope, he shouldn't have tried to qualify in it. Not fair to the other guys who sacrificed a lot in order to try to make it.

How would you feel if Joss pulled out of slope?

Well it's all irrelevant now because they do have a replacement.

So what's the big deal?

We all know its not because of the injury, OR the fact that the course is big. Only the women and Shaun are complaining. He dropped out because he knew he couldn't win, and personally, I think thats a horrible attitude towards something

Idk man, I guess no one really knows except for him.

But I still stand by my original argument.

Tom skied with a torn ACL for what, 4 competitions? A sprained wrist? With that logic he shouldn't compete in pipe either if he's scared of injury. I feel like he acts awfully entitled if he just casually says he doesn't want to compete. I know he may want to focus more on pipe, but what about his duty to represent his country? Athletes are selected to perform and to wear their country's colors with pride, not back down when things aren't completely ideal. Shaun White isn't who I want to represent US snowboarding.

remember when he rented out brecks park to practice slope for two weeks and withdrew from slope

nothing new

Love the quote from Queen Bitch:

“I’m not sure how the slopestyle course is, but obviously if Shaun's not racing, that kind of speaks for itself,” she said.

Update: we're now timing the runs. Added score of quickest finish. Prepare for the shitshow.

“I see that he definitely wants to be prepared for the halfpipe. If that’s where he thinks that he can win the gold medal, that’s a smart choice,” Vonn said. “But obviously he’s going to be disappointed to not be in the first slopestyle event that was ever in the Olympics.”

This could work out well for everyone - all the hype and controversy over White pulling out will put extra media and public focus on the event, especially with all the rumours over the course being dangerous. Then even more people will check out the comp and end up seeing the likes of Harlaut and Hatveit have a blast and throw down.

If only the commentators could be banned from referencing him every two fucking minutes.

No one is gonna watch this but if your gonna talk shit check this before you do. I somehow made it all the way through when it came out. Basically it seems like he is gonna retire after the olympics. So it makes sense when he see's other competitors get hurt that he drops out. He isn't a slopestyle rider and it's not the first time he has done this. He wants to go out with a bang and get the three peat gold for halfpipe. Considering how much everyone bashes the olympics you guys seem to care a lot about it.

Wow, Seb, Sage, and Danny..... internet tough guys here. Want to talk shit on someone? Better grab your phone and tweet it out, because they're too pussy to say it to his face.

Makes them look super lame.

Sucks big time for the alternate who will not have the chance to compete at the Olympics and use that spot. Kind of selfish on Shauns part. Yes, I get that he would rather try for medalling in pipe over competing in two events, but shouldn't he have thought about that beforehand? His sponsors spent a ton of money for his slopestyle training, and I'm sure the alternate would have loved the chance to compete and go for gold too. Shaun White has been dealing with injuries all year (ankle, shoulder, wrist) if there was any doubt about him being able to/wanting to be 100% for slope he should have let it go to the next athlete in line.

Many athletes ski in multiple events, look at Michael Phelps (Swimmers often do 4+ events) or Alpine Ski racers who do 3-5 events at the Olympics, same with speed skaters, etc. If you want to stay safe and focus in medalling in one event only - don't enter in multiple events and screw other hardworking athletes out of spots when they are willing to give it 100% for their country.

I think Shaun White dropping one of two events, when the one he is dropping is the Olympic DEBUT is a little different than Michael Phelps dropping one of his eight events. The alternate was most likely there and able to take his place right away, swimming is a little different than slopestyle.

This just makes me so much more excited to watch snowboard slopestyle. I enjoy it, and the fact that White isn't in it now will hopefully keep the commentators from talking about him too much. (Inevitably they'll be talking about him withdrawing, but I'd rather hear that than, "Shaun White at the top, I'm sure he's feeling very confident for his next run." and shit like that.) The commentators and industry need to get off of their knees, wipe the leftovers off of their face, and start recognizing real style. I for one am going to be be cheering for Kotsenburg in slope and Davis in pipe. Those are two of the styliest riders in both the snowboard AND ski world. I would love for Shaun to get totally bumped off of the podium in pipe, and the possibility is definitely there. With the likes of Danny Davis, Ayumu Hirano, and Greg Bretz, who already defeated Shaun once this year, he could end up with zero medals for the olympics and eat his decision to drop out of slope.

Also, Michael Phelps dropped the event 25 days before the Olympics even started, 100% giving time for the alternate to take the spot. He still competed in 7 events.

Shaun White dropped Slopestyle the day before Qualifications start. I don't think that is a valid comparison at all, Michael Phelps's decision didn't take a spot away from another deserving athlete.

Weird isn't it, who'd have thought skiers on a ski website would care more about snowboarding's biggest name dropping out of Slopetsyle's inaugural event at the winter olympics than they do about an Australian swimmer in the summer olympics?

Even more weirdly I bet you could go on some swimming forums and they wouldn't even care about how the Sochi slopestyle course is shaping up.

Slightly off topic:

Did you guys realized shaun landed a pipe triple this season? I had no clue, that is fucking insane.

I don't give two shits if he wants to focus on pipe. He qualified for both events and went to sochi as part of the slope team. You ride for your country and not for your fucking ego.

I heard through a Whitelines article that White actually fell on the drop in to the first rail and it was there he "hurt" his wrist.

So the course really had no part in his "injury".

It is unfortunate that another snowboarder wont be competing in slopestyle, even though that wasn't his intention. If someone from the US slopestyle ski team just dropped like that shit would hit the fan.

You do realize it's not like NS right? People can't just be anonymous douchebags on the internet. They all know each other and see each other around all the time. They're likely staying in the same hotel. I'm pretty sure anything any one of them said on the internet, they'd gladly say to White's face.

You're the one being unreasonable. If he really thought he couldn't focus on both, he would have decided long ago not to compete in both events. And hurt himself anymore? Dude, you've got to be kidding me. I'm a snowboarder, and I can assure you that he can ride with a sprained wrist just fine. The guy is a bitch. Mark is riding with broken ribs. It's a shame that Kyle Mack doesn't compete because Shaun is being selfish. Kyle could easily have a shot at making the podium, and would represent America in a much better light. To quote Chas, #shouldhavemannedup

Jesus. It seemed like yesterday he was learning doubles. How old is he now? All these young kids charging. The sport has def changed.
