Shaun White just bossin...

but from what i see and hear, no true park snowboarders would want to be represented by shaun white as the face of the sport. unfortunately, he is the face of the sport to the general public, but to any winter action sport athlete he is not the fan favorite

What the fuck is a "true" park rider? Does he not slay the park? Do people have to meet some "coolness" prerequisite in order to be accepted into the club? And who gives a shit how he represents the sport? How does an L.A. soccer mom's opinion of a sport affect people who actually partake in that sport? The whole "image of our sport" thing is a crock of shit.

What about it? Part of having a large industry is having these large-scale promotion agreements being implemented, such as Shaun White and North Star. I this pisses you off (as it rightly should), why are you blaming a symptom of the system (Shaun White) instead of placing blame where it is due: the system itself.

If redbull gave you the opportunity to train at breck in a private park, im pretty sure you would too. Anyone would for that matter. He happens to be the best pipe boarder in the word, and has incredible slopestyle skills as well, and huge opportunities come along with that. Whats wrong with taking advantage? Also, at least hes got his own style, which I think is actually pretty decent.

Regardless of ESPN's love for him, which isnt entirely his fault, holy crap is he good at snowboarding. That stalefish was ginormous.

we can hate him all we want for being a comp-whoring media slut. he's the face of winter sports and we don't like it aka a perfectly good reason to hate him

I take it you never learned basic logic. Your argument is circular in that it rests on the assumption that being a "comp-whoring media slut" as a valid reason to hate someone provides a valid reason to hate someone.

I never said you weren't allowed to feel however the fuck you wanted toward him. I just said that your reasoning of doing so is horse shit, and you don't have the right to claim otherwise.

According to whom? That's what I'm getting at. This whole attitude of "we decide what qualifies as a TRUE rider" is arrogent and self serving. You're misleadingly invalidating diversity within the sport because its commercialization does not abide by your personal ideal image of that sport.

i do in fact have the right to claim otherwise. all he does is comps and does not positively impact the community outside of winning every pipe event and being the media's golden boy. i can't think of one instance where he did something just to do it for fun and not because his sponsors told him to or because there was a cash prize. he's a shitty representation of winter sports and is given huge handicaps such as shutting down parks just so he can ride it and his own private pipe. he could do nothing but straight air and still score higher than anyone else just because he's shaun white.

Who the fuck cares whether "true" park rats want to be represented by him? HE SELLS. That's all that counts.

I think the guy is a fucking boss. He fucks beautiful women (I believe some girls find him good looking + for a "normal" person he is THE action sports star = tons of premium pussy).

If i had the money, I would shut down the best parks in the world just to make you cry as well. It's hilarious. Now you know how the fat kid felt while being teased by you in 5th grade.

I would bitch around just like him. He is more known than ANY other skier or snowboarder. Every kid on the mountain knows Shaun White. And you cannot flee from all those people on the lift line, in the streets or in the mall who don't respect his privacy...They are EVERYWHERE. So just act like a douche and the kids won't bother you. I would do exactly the same thing. I wouldn't give a shit what 17 year old park rats think about me If I was him. Fair enough that you hate him. He just won't give a fuck. Cause he is living like a boss.

Btw his snowboarding bores me big time.

Unless you can reasonably back it up, you actually don't. I'm not saying you're wrong; I'm just saying that you haven't given us a valid reasoning behind your beliefs. You could very well be right, but you can't expect us to listen to you if all you're going to do is huff and puff in circles.

So let me get this straight:

A) All he does is comps

B) The media exaggerates his impact as an athlete for corporate gains

C) He has built his livelihood around being a professional athlete, which by definition means sometimes riding when it isn't fun

D) Judges favor him because of reason B.

Tell me again how he is guilty of anything other than being an opportunist? Sounds like you have beef with the industry, not Shaun White. He just happens to be a trendy scapegoat for, and a symptom of, the shit salad that is the snowboard industry.

got arrested for trashing a hotel room, and got kicked out of Keystone for swearing and bitching at the employees because he couldn't cut The lift line. Seems like a swell guy

It's funny because half the pro skiers everyone idolizes have done so much worse. The only difference is they didn't get caught.

so what your telling me is that a guy who only succeeds at superpipe, Shaun White, is better than guys who succeed at two things, big air and slopestyle, Torstein, Mark McMorris, Seb Toots, etc.? i dont understand how succeeeding at 2 things is worse than succeeding at 1? Not to mention that Shaun White is not a good guy at all; hes not very nice to the public, trashes hotel rooms, and shuts down a park just for himself.

so your promoting the act of being a douche and using a PUBLIC mountain for your own private use? Im almost certain that you would not appreciate it if a skier or snowboarder came to your mountain and shut it down just so he could use it. But the thing is, no other skier or snowboarder would do that, instead they would take laps like a normal person (grant it everyone would probably let them go first cause they are pro anyway). They would chill will the regular riders of the mountain, unlike Shaun White

The fuck? I never said anything like that. What I said is that your idea of being able to objectively qualify someone as being a "true" rider based on their versatility is stupid and senseless. Some people are versatile while others are specialists.

And about all that other stuff...read my posts. I've already adressed them.

I think the moment I decided he was a dick was in some interview where he explains why he couldn't be happy for a friend if he beat him in a competition because he's so competitive. Being on the hill and even competing has always come along with a great sense of comradery and mutual support for me and many others. Building off the stoke you feel watching your friend land a new trick or do well in competition so you can progress yourself is the best part of our sport IMO.

Sean white is the opposite of that. He shuts down public parks for his own use, so he can ride by himself (who the fuck would rather ride alone then with their friends?) and even worse, he can't enjoy his friends success if it gets in the way of his. He trains alone so he can guard his tricks while everyone else is sharing their knowledge and having a good time. It's cool to be competitive, but if you can't be happy for your friends then there's just something wrong with your mentality.

Basically he's a selfish prick who seems to hate everything about snowboarding/skiing that actually makes it cool, and the media portrays him as the face of the sport. So fuck that and fuck him.

I'm pretty sure that Northstar isn't a public mountain as such, it might be on public land, I don't know, but it's owned and run by a PRIVATE company. This means that if you have the money or the power, you can shut it down for personal use. What you also seem to miss is that this is a smart move by Northstar, they get shit loads of exposure from letting Shaun ride, and make thousands of weekend warriors wet their pants to go ride at "that mountain Shaun White had shut down".

And like Buttmilk, or whatever his name is, said, your beef shouldn't be with Shaun, but with the system that allows and uses such strategies.

Come back when you've had a long think about your arguments, they don't make sense.

I would honestly decline based off the fact that I am ruining hundreds of local riders day. Just because he has the option to shut down parks doesn't mean he is required to either. He has the option to decline.

Biggest name in the ski/snowboard industry. Hate it or love it but the dude inspires kids to get out to the mountains and try it for them self. I see no reason to hate, dudes a bossssssss. Take a step back and look at the big picture.

Shaun White is the Skrillex of snowboarding:

He's overpaid as fuck

He's the face of an entire industry for no real reason

Nobody actually in the industry really likes him

He's ugly

He has long stupid hair

I agree with this. Although I must say yes it would be fucking awesome to have a park all to yourself, I personally find it way more fun to ride with friends. Isn't that the reason we ski/snowboard?

Yes Shaun White is extremely talented and privileged. Does that mean he needs to act like a dick? Sure the system inflates his ego and blah blah blah. So he conforms to his surroundings or how everyone else has groomed him to live? That seems pretty dumb to me.

As for his attitude to other competitors, he is a total dick. Being competitive does not mean being a poor sport. I consider myself fairly competitive and through playing sports for most of my life, i hate to lose or be bested at anything. But i learned that a better way of looking at it, especially in skiing, is to be stoked for whoever just "went Bigger", "landed a trick", "beat you". That should motivate you to advance yourself along with them because it is FUN. It is a challenge. That does not mean storm off, pout a while, and privately train so you can be unbeatable. Have fun with others trying new tricks. If they land it and you don't, be stoked for them and keep trying yourself. And that goes both ways.

So yes in the end Shaun White comes across as a total dickhead. Could he change this perception. Yes he could but the longer he acts like this, the less chance he has of redeeming that among the action sports world.

i wasnt talking about whether it was a good move by northstar or not. i was talking about how much of a douche shaun white was for doing it

i literally have the constitutional right to hate his guts as much as i want and to tell everyone how much i hate him. he is a complete dickhead and you're doing nothing but going in circles either so you can kindly fuck off.

But you said public in capital letters, and it was a major part of your argument. I'm just telling you that it is an invalid argument, and telling you that it is indeed a good move on Northstars part, that's why they do it. Again, you should have your beef with the system, not Shaun White.

lets not forget that he also won gold for 'merica back in the day... that was a huge deal for everyone, even skiers. to finally see action sports enter the olympics was a huge step towards where we are today. it also helps when you can throw a skateboard under your feet and go win gold at Xgames. like there really isnt another athlete out there who can win 2 golds in the same year in 2 diff sports.

still doesnt change the fact that hes incredibly easy to hate because of his now rockstar-esque attitude and the fact that hes a ginger and has no soul

Of course you do. At no point did I say you didn't. But your right to believe something does nothing for whether or not that belief is reasonable. I could passionately assert that the Earth is flat, but my right to say such things wouldn't change the credibility of that opinion.

Not that my opinion is remotely relevant, but for the record I agree with you that Shaun White is a cunt. I was just playing devil's advocate and pointing out that most of the hate he gets is superficial. I agree with your opinion; it's your reasoning that's fucked.

I never once made a comment on whether it was a good move for Northstar or not. Like i said, it makes Shaun White look like a douche

bar raffeli? really? i've met him at a party, he's one of the ugliest people i've ever seen. sounds like someone riding the fame train. oh and he was a huge douche, i had zero problem with him before, but after seeing how he carries himself with a holier than thou attitude, he has more than earned his reputation. notice i said nothing about his snowboarding, he obviously has boatloads of talent, but there are other people who are less serious and still get results while having seemingly more fun (IE torstein)

tanner on the other hand seems pretty cool, and loves skiing as much as anyone in world, though he does get a little wild on the sauce from time to time.

Who gives a shit about Shaun's personality. He absolutely slays pipe (and sometimes slope). You've gotta respect that despite what you feel about his perceived image. The funniest thing about this thread to me was how thedirtyozzy talked about how Tanner is misunderstood, yet countless times he has talked shit about Tanner.
