I shattered my calcaneus (heel bone) on valentines day into 20 peices (give or take a couple peices). no surgery. anyone else had a similar injury? just wondering what the outcome is after i get my cast off in mid june, cause ive been reading up on it on the internet and most people have pain years after the injury but thats mostly with surgery. i just dont want it to mess up skiing for me.

your a bitch

well before this season i broke my foot in three places on a trampoline... and after i got my cast off it hurt for like the first few weeks.. but then i went to physical therapy and it REALLY helped.i dono if htat helped at al but yea. sorry to hear that

Shattering a heel hurts like a bitch. I blow it up overshooting a jump last year and I can still feel it on some days. But no surgery when its brike in 20 pieces? that sounds like over kill.

I think it was FRODO that had the same injury earlier in the year, send him off a message and ask what his deal was for it. He only got back skiing like 3 weeks ago and he hurt it in november...

Damn, that sucks. I didn't shatter mine but I did crack it nicely. It took a lot longer than I thought it would to be pain free. Take it easy, don't push it with the recovery ( I re-broke mine undershooting a table, thinking it was good to go before it was).

I got a hairline fracture in mine last year and it was pretty painful, I can't imagine how bad it would have been to shatter it. Mine hurt pretty bad for months, and then it still hurt for almost a year whenever I landed on it, but it is all good now.

I broke my heel into 3 pieces and got small fractures on a bone in my foot and my tibia. 10 weeks on crutches. I feel your pain big time and I really wish I had waited longer to ski because my heel is swelling like shit from shredding pow the last few days. Give it the proper time to rest and then some.

I broke both my heels a couple years ago. it sucked so bad but i think i was skiing in 4 weeks but i didnt treally ski for the rest of the year. I probably shouldve waited because i still feel them on some days

Sorry to hear this! I just got over collapsed arches with bruised heels, Take it easy and be careful when you get back on skis for a bit!

shit that sucks! i fractures both of my heel bones, but it was only hair line, and that was four years ago and my heels still hurt on big jumps or hard landings

stay away from the hard impact landings for a season and you will be good to go, I broke my leg in five places a couple years back so thats what I did the following season and its all goood now. get some fat ski's and go jib the mountain and land in the pow, hit rails and build your own jumps. you will be fine, dont worry. i saw you killing it in the park a few times............nice work!

haha i just thought of someone stepping on a kitten for some reason??? but yes this is a good idea

hahaaha i thought you were errkka or whatever for a sec and i was getting the funny fail pictures all lined up...
but yea, seriously, feel better.

when i was in hospital with my ankle surgery (only 2 pieces, one big and a very small one, so nothing bad), another older (like ~40) guy received his diagnostics: the doc told him that his bone )(the one "under" the shinbone) practically shattered into pieces. he compared it to a broken window, to the crumbs of a bread.

with those analogies he tried to tell him that its pretty much impossible to rebuild it. there are pieces everywhere in the ankle, mixed with blood, nerves, muscles and ligaments. there was no way to fix it without causing more damage (that was in his case, dunno about the OP). he needed a cast for 5/6 months and afterwards they would look again if a surgery is possible or not. they just hoped that the body fixes it himself (or at least so that he can use the foot 70-80%)

BOTTOM LINE: in some cases, the damage is too big to be fixed by a simple surgery, so you might just wait and see
