Sharpening Skis

I was wondering if I take my skis to a shop if they will sharpen my skis from the toe piece of the binding to the tip and from the heel to the tail. My ski's have no grip. Most resorts I ski at have so much ice that I barley hold on with my ski's. I want to leave the middle section dull so I don't catch edges on rails. Is there any downsides to this? And has anyone done it before?? Btw its my third season on them and I never had them sharpened. Thanks

its called detuning and a lot of people do it. offcourse it will have influence on the grip your skis have but i dont think it would make that much difference.

I'm pretty sure detuning is when you dull the ski. Not sharpen it. I think you read it wrong!?!?

They will probably tune (sharpen) the entire ski then de-tune (slightly blunt) the very tip and tail so they don't catch. If you ask them to they can probably de-tune underfoot as well, or you could get them tuned normally then de-tune yourself with a gummy stone or even something low-tech like a smooth rock.

By detune he means that they will sharpen the whole ski and then make the middle part more blunt. If you only sharpen the front and back it will not be smooth. It is what you want, it sharpens the front and back while leaving the middle dull.

Yes that's what I was talking about^^ but I thought they could just sharpen the part I wanted. And I was wondering to people do this or do they just lets the middle dull out on rails?

A lot of people detune their edges. Probably most park skiers on NS just because of how much easier it makes rails. I ski a lot of all mountain so I personally like to let mine dull on the rails but its definitely not an unusual thing to detune them.
