Recently moved to Juneau, AK ~ started making a bunch of homies skating, however I ended up fracturing my thumb and tearing my UCL; I got surgery and the full recovery time is 3 months. I've consistently landed myself in the hospital every couple months with a new injury since 2017 and I kind of started vibing myself out with this most recent one.

BUT

I've always been able to turn to ns to boost my serotonin levels, wether it's an edit or a thread, y'all really do provide. Would love to hear anything going on in your life (or in general) that you are stoked on. Right now I've been getting the most stoke from watching my pup and roomies ferret try to play together.

What's the ski culture like in Junea?. I'm thinking about going there for school but am afraid that the youth culture might not be my thing. Is Eaglecrest as cool as it looks?

good luck on the start of your recovery! it'll be behind you before you know it.

how are you liking alaska and the juneau area? i've been getting interested in taking my first AK trip and have been doing a little bit of research. seems like a reasonable place to base out of for a late spring or early summer ski trip?

I moved here late April so I haven't been able to full immerse myself, however I've been able to skin up Eaglecrest and a few other spots. Every person I've met out here is super welcoming and has gotten me jazzed for the winter time. Coming from the east coast too, I've set a standard of what someone humbly saying "yeah I ski or board" is. I got here and was blown away with how nonchalant locals are when either showing me clips (after me asking what the line looked like) or telling me about some wild spots they love to ride. It seems like a spot where you'll be pushed to be a better skier without even realizing it, through the terrain and the energy from the people.

As far as Eaglecrest goes, the mountain is sick. Definitely doesn't have the greatest park, but I guess they are putting more work into it this coming season. The mountain only has a few lifts (with a plan for a gondola soon), but lines are manageable from what I've heard, even on epic weekend powder day. There's a lot of backcountry access from the top lift as well. The resort is funded by the city and the community LOVES the mountain.

I've been loving it so far, plenty of skiing available late spring/early summer too! There are some cool cabins you can skin to as well and spend the night. Really cool hikes and the community is awesome. It does rain a lot, but so far this season has been pretty sunny. I would definitely recommend taking the trip!

Is Eaglecrest skin friendly to the side country?

I like Alyeska but its definitely a buzzkill that all the outer terrain that is slightly above the lift are boot packs that they pretty much never open. That mountain if it had the culture of people skinning up to the good shit a little harder to get to would be out of this world people should be putting skins on to get way out to the northface where you take the quick walk to Christmas bowl.

Unfortunately I think it is not during operating hours :/

Vibes for a speedy 100% recovery!

Im stoked spending time with my wife and boy. We try and get out a few times a month to go camping, we camped on a beach on the west coast of Scotland this past weekend and it was epic. I get stoked seeing my 3 yr old boy get better and better on the tramp each time he gets on it. I get stoked when he says "dad, I want to go to the skate park". I get stoked landing a basic trick on my skateboard that I have been working on, I get stoked seeing someone land a trick they have been practicing. I try and stay positive as much as I can as there is plenty of negativity around. Stay stoked yourself!

I don't think it has much repeat value for people who aren't into rails to be honest. It's technically three runs: the baby hill, the main hill and the park. The park and the main hill are on the same slope, it's just the same slope divided into two sections. I think the main slope is 165 feet of vert. Really fast laps.

They make fresh snow each night I believe and they do groom it. The facility is kept at 28 degrees so it never gets slushy nor icy in my experience. They charge about 40-45$ for either a 2 or a 3 hour ticket, depending what timeslot you purchase. There is also an option to buy a 6 pack of tickets for 180$. But the place never gets terribly crowded because they're very meticulous about how many people they allow in per 2 or 3 hour block. It's called Big Snow American Dream
